Last night I had a youth playoff game. Before the game there was a buzz amongst the players and coaches. "Did you see the Maryland v. Georgetown game...Did you see the illegal stick...make sure you get your stick checked by the official"
Needless to say we probably checked a dozen sticks before the game. During the game a bunch of sideline discussion about stick checks, but none where called by the coaches. The game was a blow-out. If it were a closer game – I think there would have been a couple called.
A know a few of you guys do football. Do the players and coaches in football try to emulate things they see on TV – college or professional? It certainly seems this way in lacrosse.

You must have missed my post a while back--it started well before that game. I've now seen at least 5 games with at least 3 requested checks. In a playoff game last night--like it has in every other game I've seen it--it's come back to bite the first coach to make the request square in the butt. Last night, the coach who called for 2 checks got no EMO out of it, while the coach who "retaliated" got 4:00.
Again, the message is, "Don't call for a check unless you know your own team is legal!"

In the early 80's, I worked a college game in which a D-1 school was losing to a D-3 school, which was driving the young D-1 coach mad. After he was scored upon by the D-3 player for about the umpteenth time that day, the coach asked for a stick check on the player. The stick was legal and we returned it to the player. The D-3 coach was so incensed that anyone would question the legality of his player's crosse he then asked for a stick check. When I asked him for the number of the player he wanted checked, he randomly pointed at one player and said, "Just check his stick." The stick was only 39 1/2" long. So the D-1 coach went from trying to be man-up for 1 or 3 minutes to being man down for 3 minutes. After assessing the penalty, the D-1 coach just looked at me, shrugged his shoulders, threw up his hands and said, "I don't think we were meant to win this game." Both of us laughed and went on with the game, which the D-3 team won easily.
Note: The D-1 team is playing in the Final Four this weekend

Still like the Canadian way better - everyone's got an illegal stick, and no one cares!

No, the coach did turn the team around but later went into private business.

Yes, mostly professional football. If you see some kind of play on ESPN highlights, expect to see youth coaches attempt to run the play the next weekend.
