eme,
saw you do today's game. You looked spiffy. Two questions:
1) What did you throw the flag for by the penalty box? Did you think it was offside and the CBO said otherwise? When you picked it up you waved it as it signal inadvertent flag. What was that all about?
2) Blue 21 (defender) was sent to the penalty box with about 15 seconds left at the end of the 3rd quarter, and white had possession in their attack area. The fourth quarter started out with white just over center X. Why not in the same relative position it was at when the 3rd quarter ended? Why move it back rather than start just outside the box? I didn't follow that sequence.
1) My inadveretent flag...I thought Blue was offsides but they weren't. Limestine had the ball when I threw the flag thus, under ncaa rules, they retain possession. On hindsight, I should have whistled play dead when I realized the error, waved off the flag, and restarted with White having possession. Maybe I was hoping in the back of my mind that White would score and I could wave it off wit less fanfare...
2. I don't know. Can't remember.
What a great game. Very exciting. Couldn't hear a thing on the field.

It was rocking. Both games were great. Hope you had fun. Quite an honor.
If you remember why white started at center X, let me know.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that makes mistakes like that! I had a college club game this year where I saw a slash on the head, threw the flag, and then realized it was his teammate that clocked him. I was very confused - started to pick up the flag to slip it back in my waistband, thought better of that and let the play continue until the ball came loose. I then indicated that it was an inadvertant flag, and awarded by alternate possession. the coach who had possession when i threw the flag was insisting that he should get it back. I said that no, the ball was now loose and it should go AP. At the half, we obviously discussed the play and my wise partners counseled me that once I realized it was inadvertant, I should have whistled it dead, wave the hankie, and restart with the team in possession. A good learning experience!

Ah, a good segue for our new rule proposal as stated on an earlier thread:
(NEW RULE)
RULE 7-14
INADVERTENT FLAGS, WHISTLES, AND HORNS
At the time of an inadvertent flag, horn or whistle, whichever came first, play must be stopped immediately and:
(a)...a team with, or entitled to, possession shall restart play with possession.
(b)...if neither team has or is entitled to possession, the ball shall be awarded by the AP rule (unless the ball is in the crease, in which case it shall be awarded to the defense 20 yards lateral to the goal).
Play shall be restarted:
(a) ...if there was an inadvertent flag, at the spot the ball was when the flag was thrown. Play shall be restarted outside the attack area if the ball was inside the attack area.
(b) ...if there was an inadvertent whistle [or horn], where it was when the whistle [or horn] sounded. Play shall be restarted outside the attack area if the ball was inside the attack area.
