I was watching some of the semi-finals on Saturday, and noticed that there were four officials on each game. I thought the NCAA had abolished the CBO? Does anyone know if they've decided to go back on their decision?

I saw the 4th official you speak of, I am guessing that is the alternate, not the CBO.

It is the alt official. They still want someone there if one of the officials goes down to injury. He basically makes sure that penalties are administered correctly (i.e. players don’t serve 1-min holds) until such point he is needed on the field.

That's what I figured, he seemed more involved in todays game than the alternates did on Saturday's games.

He actually had control of the horn, so there weren't any silly endline horns or anything, I guess. Not that I'd expect that in a top DI game anyway.

ACTUALLY, there was a horn and one of the officials had to yell "NO HORN"and wave the guys off, then another official(who I assume is the R) let them sub becausethey didn't have enough(or too many) on the field.
The fellow in the box was the alternate official for each game. He had no jurisdiction (couldn't throw a flag) but was in charge of the horn and relaying penalties to the table. He would have gone on the field if one of the field officials had been unable to continue, etc. He had a key position in helping the game run smoothly because of all the noise and it was hard to see because of the multi-colored backgrounds, etc.But he was also a big help in a quiet way in helping the trail coming into the box about offsides and too many men, etc. The same person did it for the two games in Saturday. Another official did it for the two games on Sunday and a third worked the MOnday game. All three were from the Philly/NY area or close by.

I noticed that too, thinking they had done away with the CBO. Even if they just call him the alternate, its nice to have that extra set of eyes on the big games!

We had a CBO on our State Final game on Saturday, the first time I've done a game with one. I have to admit it really helped a lot! Having someone to monitor the box and watch for offsides allowed the trail to more quickly get involved in the on-field activity. We all recommended that they do the same in the future.
