leg extensions are the best way to get strong knees....that will decrease pain...also, when youre off the field, try to rest your knees...ride a bike instead of running, or rollerblade instead of running....that'll save your knees

Actually leg extensions are one of the worst things you could possible do. Most knee problems in the age group of 10-16 is osgood schlatters sydrome. This is a problem with the tendon being stronger than the bone and therefore pulls on the bone and creates tiny fractures. What you want to do is stay away from weight training excercise for your lower body until 6 months after the pain is completely gone. By doing more excercises you are strengthening the tendon which would cause more pain as well as damage. To help with the pain use ice and a heating pad, also ask your coach about what you can do if you have to keep weight training to have quality workouts once a week. Hope this helps if you want more info go to http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=fitness&category=sports.injuries&conitem=b018f283c8d93010VgnVCM100000cfe793cd____

ok... maybe my doc was wrong, but just today she told me that osgood schlatters phenomenon (what she called it) happened because in order to grow, that tendon actually had to seperate from the patella and sort of slide down the shin bone so you could grow. That's why it happens during growth spurts. She told me to wear a knee brace if I was going to go running to support the injured knee, because the lack of the tendon made it more likely for it to be hurt in another way (ACL, etc). I dunno though, she's not actually a trainer, so my franks source is right (it probably is)

Trust a doctor on the subject, if you're not sure, get a second opinion. They do know more than most trainers, maybe it was the 7 years of school I don't know. Some doctors have different specialties, so keep that in mind.
My rule of thumb, for all of my players.... IF YOU HURT, YOUR BODY IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. All you have to do is figure out what that it wants to tell you. My players do not take advil or anything like that before a game, you need to know when your body is hurting. You don't want to find out after the game.
Knee pain isn't all that uncommon when you're young, or old. Get some educated opinions, not random people on the internet, and go from there.

my uncle is a doc and when i had these probs he just told me to stay off it for a while, and to walk while squatting and some more exercises and it got better. Also i have been wearing a knee brace just incase to be safe during the game.

My uncle was the one who said that I had it, he has been and orthopedic surgeon that specialized in knees and ankles for the last 20 years so I think he is right.

And what do you mean while you are squating?

I second all of that.

Everyone's problems are different. This kid shouldn't even be asking for advice from all of you 'trained professionals.' Stop telling him what he should and shouldn't do. What if you're GUESS is wrong? First was have internet tough guys, now we have internet doctors... Great.
