View Full Version : When to start at center X??

In the D2 title game, NYIT (blue) had a PF assessed with 10 seconds left in the 3rd quarter (and was now man down). Limestone (white) had the ball in their attacking zone when the period ended. Rather than restart it in the same relative position, they gave it to Limestone (white) at center X to start the 4th period, an apparent error IMO. I asked eme (who worked that game) why, but he did not recall.

So, I'm wondering what are valid reasons to start the ball in one team's possession just over center X to start a period. What I have come up with:

1) Any single dead ball foul between periods.
2) Two or more dead ball fouls between periods, where sequence can be determined, or sequence cannot be determined and penalty time is equal (we award by AP).
3) Simultaneous dead ball fouls between periods, where one team has more penalty time assessed.
4) Technical foul on the face-off, awarding the ball to the opponent.
5) Flag down situation at the end of a period, in the defensive end of the offended team. Move the ball to center X and send the player to the box to restart.

What am I missing? None of these occurred in the game. Did the refs make a mistake, or am I overlooking something obvious?

Let me ask you this, how far away was the ball from where it should have been put in play? It's not an exact science CoachRob, just guestimate the location.

Well, it was inside the attacking box IIRC, so it must have been at least 25+ yards. At the very worst, it should have been at the top of the box at the restart, don't you think?

They started it exactly as you would after a time-serving penalty in the defensive end.

Agree that it should be close to the same relative position, either in the D end or outside the box. It's amazing the number of times this year I heard coaches and players yelling at the end of a period "keep it in the box!!", thinking they need to to retain possession. I try to educate them at the whistle by pointing out that either team can have possession, anywhere on the field, when you have an uneven number of players and retain the ball. Now we have the differerence between Fed and NCAA on a pass being "in possession". Just keeping us on our toes!
