Dude skimboarding is the sickest ever. What's your price range and your weight(weight detirmens what board size). Definitly look at ZAP and after you move up in skill move to Slotstik and Victoria.

A couple of good online stores.

I used to be pretty good when I lived in cali, I used to be able to go out into where the waves broke and do a flip. Took me like 3 years to learn how to do that.

hmm i suck at skim boarding, and womping, and body surfing for that matter, and of course reg surfing. i stick to napping and swimming at the beach. and lately a little frisbee..

I've been dying to get a skim board, my friends are always at the beach and skimming so I borrow theirs but I want one of my own. They kept saying it was hard but I'm better than most of them.

But fiberglass ones are like what. . . $200+?

OK I'm looking at this one and it says for sand surfing only, you won't be riding any waves.

WTF does that mean?

juniorC
06-01-2005, 12:39 PM
hey, i skimboard and surf a ton. if your a good skimboarder you can ride it towards the surf, hit the wave and come back down. but i think thats just a joke there making, the skimboard looks fine.

ViennaLAX16
06-01-2005, 03:36 PM
Sorry for the criticisim but you will break a bat even though it has a weight limit that high it is only 38 inches. Your looking at a medium to large wedge and possibly small pro. You will have to end up paying about 150-200 becuase of your wieght.

basically u stand on the beach and then before a wave comes u sorta throw the board on the ground so it "skims" acrosse the sand and u run and like jump on it like after a step or two. then good people will be able to like turn and sorta ride the wave or doa cut back thing or like a flip or somehting when they hit a wave. ive never skimmed but i live near the beach. anyway i would suck if i tried so i would rather save myself the embarrassment

so even if it says only for sand u cans till probably atch a wave with it?

yes mine is "only for sand". the "non sand" ones r huge, u can ride them out to the first set of breaking waves and ride the wave and then come back in. however, mine is a sand only one and what u do is chuck ur board straight out as the waves is about to break, run through the water (usually a foot or so deep where i am) and jump on right as ur board is about to get to the wave. u can get quite a big air on that even though the ride will last u only a few seconds...
when one of my friends hits a huge wave, flies over and lands it it's huge props

whats the difference b/w a pro and a wedge and all that stuff

ViennaLAX16
06-17-2005, 08:24 AM
The pro's are thincker and a good 5 inches longer with a smooth top and a marble bottom design. All wedges are shorter with a textured top and a all white bottom and about and about an 1/4 of an inch thinker. Depending on expeirence and wait I can help you decide what board you need.

I can to flips whenever just if someone asks....trust me there is no way to do with your board, You have to run, drop, and slide perfectly and on time to make it up the wave right before it's about to crash to do it with out braking your neck.

SDPirate three dings is nothing....well actually depends where it is if it is on the deck its fine but if it's on the bottom and there is a puncture just suncure it will do! . There ok but yes they ding easily. Go with Zap, Vic's, and Exile's they are th emost trusted. And wow 170? For a poly vac. NICE. skimboarding is the bomb. I handmake mine, both wood and fiberglass. Wave riding is so much more fun than sand skimming. The best skim website is skimonline.com It has tons of info and movie clips. The best move ive ever done is a backflip. the beach was kind of steep, and the waves were pretty tall. I went straight down the beach, rode out about 6 feet into the water, rode up the wave like a quarter pipe, and shot off the back of it, doing a backflip. If you have enough speed it's easy.

make one yo. i made my own and it rides like a dream. just get google 'how to make a skimboard' and get directions. all you really need to do is get a big piece of wood, plot out an outline, cut it with a jigsaw, and paint or stain it, then finish it with laquer and gloss. i stained mine to get a real natural look. the best thing is noone will have anything like it!

ok guys.

OC Local speaking. The OC. (sounds like a lot of you guys don't really get the culture of skimming, not to be pretentious)

If you want a lot of information fast, visit the forums on www.skimonline.com
(Sidebar under "Interact", then click forums)

also, if you see an experienced skimboarder at your beach, he/she will probly be pretty chill and willing to help you out, but dont get in their way or take their wave. thats possibly the most annoying thing you can do.

also, if you really want to get into skimming, the zap wedge or the victoria ultra vac is a very solid choice. durable but wont break the bank, and allows you to get out into open water.

im 120 pounds

so wats would be a good zap board i dont want like a p.o.s.

bat or wedge loks decent

yea skim boarding looks fun to me cuz it looks like surfing to me so far minus the paddling. and i hate paddling so its all good

how can you hate paddling? its not hard.
i surf shortboards and bodyboards, im not too big on skimboarding though.

i do however have a skim board that i made myself, i let my friend use it and he said it was awesome, i used a victoria skimboard as a model to shape mine out on, victoria skimboards seem pretty solid, so im saying go with that.
where in socal do you live?
on marine street in la jolla, there are tons of good spots, especially when you catch a south swell.
theres also a place in carlsbad, tamarack street which is a well known skimboarding spot, but in the summer months, expect a bunch of kooks.

I used to skim a ton but I got out of it because I didnt go to the beach for like a year. I'm trying to get back into it, can anyone suggest a good board for me? I used a kid's on the beach and I havent lost much I'm still pretty good. I'm 170, not trying to spend alot on it.

I go to myrtle beach every summer and I took up on skim boarding randomly one vacation. I went to one of there thousand Wave shops located just about every block and picked one up. I got pretty good at it, but I only return to the beach once a year. So I usually have to pick it back up again. It's a lot of fun!!!!!!!!!!

skim board does not compare to surfing. at least to me it doesnt. being born and raised(and currently living in) san diego gave me alot of experience behind local sports, so i have almost tried them all.
to me, i dont get the same rush when skimboarding, as opposed to when im surfing. sure its fun when the near shore breakers, but im not all too enthused to go out and go skimboarding.
i'll go when the surf is flat, or if the waves are real choppy; but to me, the hierarchy goes surfing>bodyboarding>skimboarding.
its especially not any fun when the beach youre at has a bunch of kooks who are trying to learn and are snaking the good waves.
at least we still have the "locals only" spot to call our own.
