View Full Version : A Great Head...So why was it taken off the market???

I have been playing with a DeBeer Wizard for the past two seasons and in my last game of the year, it finally broke. The two year life span is an accomplishment since all my other heads barely made it through a year. I went to the store to purchase another one only to find that it was taken off the market!! Is DeBeer crazy?? I know a lot of kids who use the Wizard and swear by it. Now all they have is the oracle and the triton. Anybody else find this to be stupid?

The wizard was taken away because it was so thick and heavy. It was like hitting someone with a brick.

I cannot explain the disappearance. The only thing I could speculate is that with Oracle, Triton, and other newer heads coming on the market, perhaps DeBeer could have abandoned it to focus on the newer stuff.
Personally, I love small Apollo elbow pads. I will need a new pair soon, and I have head they are also tough to find these days.
I think with the explosion of equipment, some of the older models get left behind.
For example, I do not see too many excalibur 1 heads in catalogs any more. Liam Banks used one when he scored 6 on P'ton in 2000, and the Ex. had a huge impact on the game.

Well, you're incorrect in saying that they only have those two heads. You missed the Torque, definitely the best Gait head and one of the best on the market now.
Anyway, companies do that a lot. Like the Matrix; no one wanted to see that go, but at least we got the Answer to fill the emptiness caused by it's absence. Well, you can always buy the Wizard on eBay or somewhere else. It's a good head, but it's old, but I can't give you a definite explanation as to why... But the Torque is awesome.

Eventually all heads get discontinued. They don't sell as much as they used to (since they've been out for so long), and they need room for newer heads. Companies only market so many heads at a time. And some heads were extremely unpopular and just didnt sell at all (ie Liquid, Hype, etc.)
A few notable "victims" have been the Matrix (this year), Edge (the actual original edge hasnt been apart of Brine's product line for awhile), X2 (the head is on masscloseout's site, and its no longer on STX's site so its definitely gone), and next year it looks like the Proton will be gone (it's also on masscloseout's site for real cheap, which means stx has begun selling off their leftovers).
The next casualties you can expect are: Revolution (the thing's been out forever, and Revo Pros have taken over), Evolution (same thing but with the Evo Pro), and as said before, the Proton. I also wouldn't be surprised if the Brine Prophecy will be gone.
As for the wizard-it was an older head (an ugly one too), and with the release of the oracle, it pretty much replaced the wizard. It's an ugly head designed specifically for defense, much like the wizard. Plus, the oracle is much lighter, which I guess is an "advancement"

Wizards were one of the toughest heads out there. They NEVER break. If they don't break, DeBeer/Gait can't sell too many of them.
Defense head? Paul Gait designed the sucker!

i found like 5 of them at the MadLax in Alexandria for 35 bucks. Needless to say i picked one up for myself :-D
Prophecy and Edge X both in GA's clearance section this month (if not before), if I'm not mistaken Lax101. The Wizard is a good head - Pinched, stiff, not trying to be anything else than a solid head. It has two things working against it. First, is the trend introduced (to lacrosse) by Warrior of coming out with three or more new heads each year just to have something new out there, without much innovation. There hasn't been any really spectacular innovation since the Edge for that matter. This leads into the second, is that the Wizard is a solid, but plain head - it doesn't have any "cool" gimmick or top player endorsement that will sucker those in who don't know any better. With the trend of introducing new heads only to have something fresh, some heads are going to suffer casualties, and given that the Wizard is relatively low-profile (and probably low selling due to this fact and debeers suck marketing), another good head is unfortunately going to get the axe.

but that was because 2 out of the four teams are sponsored by STX, and JHU uses only stx.

Gait is no longer producing wizards. That doesn't mean they don't have any left in their warehouses. The shipment lax.com is getting is probably one of their last shipments of wizards Gait has available.
however, some other companies, like STX, just sell their remaining discontinued heads in mass wholesale to stores like masscloseouts (and probably don't even bother shipping heads to stores).
