it depends what u want
macs don't get viruses, as most computer viruses are written for pcs. They also tend to be a little more powerful for the same amount of money.
pcs are going to be more compatible, so if you're trying to collaborate with other people, and are going to have to connect with a wire to print and everything, it'd probably be easier just to get a mac (although their are certain accessories that let you sidestep that whole problem.

I prefer a pc. If I were you, I'd get a Dell Inspiron 9600, or, if you want small because you're going to be carrying it a lot, an Inspiron 700M.

OK, PC is a general term. Personal Computer. And a Mac is a PC.

I'd go with a Mac, they dont get viruses, they have tons of cool software like iLife.

yea, but most people call anything running Windows a PC whereas a Mac is just a Mac. I got a '12 powerbook and I like it a lot. Never had any problems with anything, just works, but I don't play games or anything (if you play games deffinitly go Windows). Mac's are just stylish too

DONT GET AN APPLE! dont, if you're going to get one wait for a while, atleast a year.

They are swittching processors, which means a totally new computer, and an operating system, so youd just be wasting your money. SO DONT GET AN APPLE, or atleast yet!

i used to be like a lot of u... i was obsessed with mac's and refused to admitte that anything else would do, but iv changed

dont get me wrong i still love the macs their great, but PC's are more powerful, i actually have a selection of software, and i can play games that havn been out for 2-3 years

like i said i luv my alienware cause its like having a desktop but its a laptop

another thing bout macs, i had an ibook for 2 years loved the thing to death... literally it broke pretty easy, the plastic casing broke, the logic board broke, the chargine jack broke, the screen broke, and i went through 7-8 chargers.... most of my friends with ibooks go through the similar thing, so if u are in the market for a mac spend the extra cash for a powerbook

I reccomend getting a Dell. I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 and it has a huge screen, a ton of memory, and fast speed. Dell has fanatastic customer support, PCs are the most widely used laptop and thus will be readily compatible with pretty much everything.

It's really personal preference. Apples just look nice, IMO, nothing too special.

"Gotta get a Dell dude"

I dislike Dell laptops. They aren't built to last. Alienware-HAHAHAHAHAHA. Ah you fell for it huh? IBM or Mac. Do it. If you're going windows, you gotta go IBM, or higher end Acer.

what do u mean "i fell for it" believe me id been looking for a laptop for a while, and i was willing to pay a little extra to get a PC laptop that actually looks good, customer support that isn based in India, and to be the only one on the block with one, but thats just me, i also wanted the ability to upgrade whenever i wanted and to not have it void my warrenty, if u open up that dell buy bye warrenty... iv gone through the innerds of my alienware 2 or 3 times just for the hell of it and i can still get help if i want it

mac. So much better than PC's, because as many people have said, they don't get virsuses, and they are pretty powerful. I am currently on a mac mini and I love it. Plus, macs look much cooler, both just as the hardware and the software they run. Everyone knows that "aesthetically pleasing" is a must-have quality.

raykessler

about the viruse thing... i will admite that MAC has no virus' and that was a great thing when i had them... but keeping yourself from getting virus' when u have a PC really isn that hard, you just need a decent firewall and a little bit of intellegence to notice when things just dont seem right, iv had my pc for 6 months and have only been using the windows SP2 firewall... absolutly no virus'

www.alienware.com take a look at those computers and tell me they arnt aesthetically pleasing and iv always thought that XP lookd like it was designed by a disney designer on acid but all u need is a good background and eventually u get used to it

I concur, Apple switching to Intel processors from IBM (who has been screwing them over for a long time now) won't be realized for quite a while. Also, I very much doubt that Apple would create a totally new operating system. They have far, far too much invested in the OS X system. Or, if you are talking about just the laptop upgrade from the G4 to the G5 processor, no one knows when they are going to get on top of their game and solve the heat issues (and why would that even stop you from buying a computer)

People will always ***** about apple batteries, but from my personal experience (not saying this is true all the time) I have a second gen. iPod which still holds a nearly new charge and my powerbook battery which holds the same charge as the first day I got it. Also, I've only seen one powerbook battery recall and it was only for a few batteries with a very specific range of serial numbers. I'm not saying that bad batteries dont happen, but these blanket statements people are making are clearly, at least to me, innaccurate.

Raykessler, it may be easy to keep your computer free of viruses, but if it is than why is that such an outrageous problem for so many people. Personally I like just not having to worry about it and go about my daily tasks.

windows boxes may be more powerful (in general they are, but the high end Apple towers are brilliant. I love them for my video editing), but you only need that extra power if you are playing games or using software that needs a lot of juice (and that isn't Word). Most people just surf the net, use AIM (or if you do get a mac, go with a program called adium...much better than AIM), word process, and other simple tasks. If you want to play games go Windows... no contest there.

depends on your uses...
macs like everyone says don't get viruses...
I on the other hand like compatability with work, school, etc that a windows based laptop offers...as far as brands:
IBM - those things used to be able to take a beating and still work...used to be considered the workhorses...not too positive anymore...
Dell - my office leases them...why...because they crap out after 2 years (but work very well while they work)... if we lease them we can get them when they are fine and then give them back before they dust...
Toshiba - affordable and fairly durable...
Gateway - are they still in business...if so these are the WORST EVER...
Sony - overpriced because of their brand name...
Alienware...too expensive for me but from what I hear are pretty damn powerful...

I got my Dell Insipiron 5150 at the beginning of this school year(Last August). The only problem I've had with it is that the Hard Drive shot out on me. Although that is a pretty big problem, I was able to talk with Dell support and get it replaced in about 3 days. They sent me a new hard drive, that actually had 60gigs of space compared to my previous one of 20, and talked me easily through installing it and windows, etc. myself.

I change my mind. I would still go Macintosh and/or IBM/Toshiba. Possibly Dell, maybe they've gotten better this year.

The Intel switch has very little to do with buying a Mac now. Today's Macs will be totally compatible wtih new Apple products for at least five years, the lifespan of any Mac hardware anyway. That is like saying don't buy a Dell because Intel might introduce a new processor in two years, or not to get Windows b/c Lonhorn is coming out within the next few years. Macs are built to last, unlike Dells, and the extra $ you pay you get back in the quality of the hardware and its parts. I have a dell desktop and I've had to do a lot of maintanence on it over the years. Dells are cheap b/c they're built cheaply, with cheap parts. I bought a Powerbook and love it. Everything just works. OS X is fantastic too. It took me about 45 minutes to set up my digi cam on teh desktop with all the drivers and stuff. Instant "plug and play" on my Powerbook. The only real edge PC's have over Macs is gaming, or so I hear. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend a Mac laptop, especially the Powerbook.

horsefooey. Apple has already written the code so that the mac OS to run on intel's chips. and the new developer kits are either getting ready to go out or are already going out.

it wont make a difference, so if you decide to buy a mac, there is no need to wait.

ipod batteries: like cordless phones, dont let them run down, and you will be fine. if you let it run out all the time you will kill it pronto.

fwiw, unless you have a compelling reason to buy the powerbook, save your money and buy the ibook. we have one of each in my house and they are pretty darn close in capabilities

PS Mike Dell has already said that Dell would be willing to sell its computers with the mac OS rather than MS's OS

To all the people who ragged on the Alienware:

HAHAHAget an Alienware if money is no issue. They are beautiful (inside AND out!) computers! I've got an Aurora desktop and i couldn't be much happier! (i could be happier, with dual 30" monitors and a better processor) They are definitely well built computers too! Plus they tie up all the cables so when you need to replace/change/fix something inside, it's easy to get to. All the cords are out of the way.

I suggest Alienware if you have the money.
