The way I did it was just slightly move your overhand throws by taking angles. If you have trouble still just look at the ball and then throw. Sooner or later you can feel it in your pocket and know whens a good time to let it rip. For a beginner try passing sidearm throws then when your used to that try shots then soon you can do lasers.

I taught myself a little different. I mastered over hand, then i would move my arms down a little more and more and more just a little bit at a time. Till it was eventually side arm. If that doesnt make sense, imagine an over hand shot with ur stick as the arms of a clock. Overhand is noon, then move it to one o clock, 2 o clock until eventually your shooting sidearm...which would be 3 o clock. If it feels wierd and ur missing the net, your probably doing it right. It wont come to you right away.
