At half time, coach comes up to you and asks if he can borrow your tape measure. Do you give it to him?

That is dicey, I don't think it's a wise thing to do. That's why we make ourselves available before the game!

Assuming I haven't put a stick in the box in the first half, I would probably do it.
On a separate note, if you DO have an illegal stick, DO NOT go and demonstrate it to the coach!! You'll do nothing but open a 55 gal drum of worms! I saw a ref do that the other night and I cringed!!
Make your call and get on with the game!

Hopefully if you have a stick in the box for measurement it is there for the whole game or you have another violation.

I wouldn't give it to a coach.

-Let's say I'm a coach, and you're stuck reffing a game on your own.

-I know, or suspect, that no one else, including the other coach has a tape measure handy

-I know that 5 of my guys have borderline or illegal sticks.

So, what to do?

I borrow the tape, "lose" it, and then mysteriously find it near the end of the game and return it.

Also, as a coach, I'd prefer to do all my measuring in a place where my opponent and refs can't see me.

Yeah, I guess you don't know I keep two spares in my bag. And they might be a little extra-sensitive if you tried to pull this stunt! :chuckle:

That's actually what I said.

Coach: Can I borrow your tape measure?
Me: Sorry coach, that wouldn't be fair.
Coach: Why not balhalbalbalh
Me: Sorry Coach
Coach: You guys are suppose to be cooperative!
Me: Well coach we were available before the game to measure sticks, you could have taken advantage of it.
Coach: blablablalbalbah

But you never answered the question, would you let him borrow it?

So does that mean you will let him borrow your tape measure?

I also keep a spare so that trick wouldn't work on me.

I guess I'm not as much of a conspiracy theorist. If he wants to check something on his own, no big deal. I might also offer to help, which could be interesting if something proved to be amiss. I might make a mental note of that stick for the 3rdQ.
If it helps him avoid a penalty, so be it. I'm not looking to trap someone. I do agree that we've made ourselves available beforehand, but if he wants to borrow it, just return it.

I guess I'm not sure. I'd probably say no, because I might need it and the kind I have breaks really easily.

Sorry snake, you are right I didn't answer the question! The answer is I don't know. It would be a judgement based on game conditions I think and my frame of mind at the time.

Compliance via cooperation and communication is preferable to compliance via coercion.
"Sure coach, but I will need it back before we re-start play."

I look back on it and I would have done the same thing, especially since we had already found an illegal stick against his team in the first quarter.

Maybe I missed the point, but for my own understanding, I would separate the issue of the coach wanting to use our tape measure and doing a stick check. I would not have any problem permitting the coach to use the tape, but I would not delay the game to do so and I may ask the coach to wait until after our stick checks after the first quarter so that I would not have to track it down within the two minutes. If I have done a stick check and put the stick on the table for whatever measurement is illegal that stick is out of the game. The coach can't touch it and therefore can't measure it. If he does, it is USC.
