Illegal, duh.

edit: Wait, barely illegal as in you can just see above the ball or you can barely just see over it, but not quite.

"DEEP POCKET" is the one area of the stick check where I have no grey area. The pocket is only deep if you make it deep or let it get that way!

When it comes to pockets, illegal is illegal.

If I can see daylight, it'll draw a minute. On the head measurement, I'd like to see a 16th or more before I invoke the death penalty.
On the matter of sticks, I just returned from doing a state Regional Final game with an interesting story. Team A has an excellent attackman who will likely be a HS AA this year. I've done several of their games this year, and HSAA always comes over before the game to get checked out - and is always good. In some of the games I haven't bothered checking him, looking for a more likely suspect.
On Tuesday I went and watched Team A's semifinal game, and noticed HSAA came out with two sticks, leaned one against the back of the bench, warmed up a little and went to the refs for his customary check. My curiosity was piqued slightly.
At today's final, he came over before the game and had me check the stick - way over 6.5". During the course of the first three qtrs he scored 5 goals while drawing lots of D attention. At the quarter break, I called him for a check. Stick was over an 1/8" too narrow! Teams are done with their break, I toss the flag and announce the death penalty. HSAA goes crazy - "You checked it before the game - You checked it before the game!" I put it under the table leg while thinking to myself - "I don't think I checked THIS stick". Coach asked for a measurement - "No!" The game was tied 9-9 at this point. Team B puts in 4 goals during the penalty, and wins by 5. As we're leaving the field, the asst. coach is asking for a measurement as we ignore him and walk to our cars. After changing, I see the asst. coach, who I know fairly well, and he says "good call, it was definitely illegal, I checked it myself". I told him my story about the previous game, and he was a little bemused, wondering if a switch could have taken place. I don't know for sure, but we had a bad stick for certain!

On occasion, I'll accidentally get a guy who's already been checked at the equipment check. I never feel too bad about this, since I suspect there are kids who bring out their illegal stick if they get checked after the first quarter, thinking they're okay. And I never let pre-game checks influence my choice of players for stick checks for the same reason.

I will always let kids know about there pockets before the game ie; your close there make sure you keep an I on it during the game but whatever you do if we ask you for it at the end of the quarter don't adjust it then! Still no matter what you end up with a couple.

You probably already know this, and some of the other refs and coaches will too.

If you can, watch the scoring team players as they shake hands and congratulate each other after a goal.

I've seen more than one stick passed off to a teammate during the handshake.

I think we need to start a "Dirty tricks to watch for" thread!
