In your opinion, are lacrosse players, in general, more arogant than others?

Difference between baseball and lax: baseball has one or two baseballtitutes for the entire team, we have one or two per player. And why not? Statistically we get better grades, get into less trouble, do cooler things, and look better. Plus most baseball players sound like they got hit over the head with a shovel, eeeeeeeeeeeew. BTW even if we don't go pro unlike baseball players we get lots of good jobs. Heck we'll lax on the side!

Out at my school, we're located in Lil' Camden, NJ. A lot of crime, not a lot of rich kids. There are no arrogant preppy white kids on our team. Most of us came from Soccer or Football, where the coaches are [no profanity] and humble the [no profanity] out of you. Soon as I got to lacrosse I quit football and love it. The guys on my team are chill as hell.

I do know a couple of arrogant lacrosse players, and that'll be the stereotype that ignorant people refer to. Very diverse? Don't get me wrong, lacrosse is definitely more diverse than it used to be. I go to school in College Park Georgia, famous for the rappers from the area such as bubba sparx, ying yang twins, and ludacris, so its same to say the area is predominantly black. Our lacrosse team however, has one Indian, two black kids, and the rest are white. I'm sorry, but IMO its still mostly a white mans sport.

Abercrombie and Fitch Lax t-shirts come to mind. No one would challenge or ask someone in a football t-shirt, but we would talk to someone in a Lax shirt out of habit.. and when we find they don't play the game... :chair: Not because we are arrogant.. but because we love our sport...

Case in point... on a recent airplane flight, I saw someone in a Lake Placid Classic hat and Vail Shoot Out shirt... we strike up a conversation.. and all of a sudden I discover I am talking to an MLL ref, who also ref's college ball... We talked for the whole flight, with other people asking questions about the game. Show me another sport where that happens...

Pro's (be it MLL or NLL) play for a small paycheck and are (with very few exceptions) honored when a 10 year old asks for their autograph. We play pick up games with people who we only know by their board name and give them respect, we play for charity, and most of all we play because we can.

I think it might be because lax has such a middle class air (for want of a better word) to it, especially to those who have maybe never played. Though it is true that lax is not a cheap sport to play. The gear is very expensive. To play basketball, you need a basket, and a ball. To play lacrosee you need a myriad of expensive equipment, even for a chilled game in the park. Obviously its an sweeping statement and can't be taken seriously, not all preppy white kids are chilled, not all preppy white kids are arrogant. I don't care how good some soccer's player's footwork are, chances are they can't take the beating, and aren't willing to put their body on the line. imagine if Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson decided to play midfield when they were in high school. Imagine if Reggie Bush or LT wanted to be attackmen at the same time. And what if Julius Peppers wanted to play D and Champ Bailey wanted to play LSM. Heres my take on this. Take the major 3 sports baseball, basketball and football. All 3 have had major issues dealing with cocky players.

baseball: Steroids, betting
basketball:raping, fights, legal issues, betting, wife beaters
football: weapons, dog fighting, legal issues etc.

Then there leaves Lacrosse, an up and coming sport who has had trouble finding its way in the press in the early 20th century, has all of a sudden been swarmed with the duke scandal, and parents who dont know much about the sport and its history, nor care to find out, label lacrosse players based on the only thing they have heard about it. THE DUKE SCANDAL. I feel the people passing these judgements upon us are the TRUE arrogant ones.

In my school in Vermont, most guys tell me that lacrosse isnt a real sport because nobody likes it, then again these(no profanity) are stupid football players. They also say that professional players dont make as much as other pros. Who really cares(besides the NLL) how much they make. Its not about the money, its about the game.

Were decently well-off, but not loaded and guaranteed to get to college. The baseball players on the other hand, are all the "upper class", white, and are rich, so to say.

Our team is pretty diverse too, but we know we work hard to win and be successful, something the baseball team rarely does. (They don't even have off-season workouts, too busy partying every single weekend) :chuckle:

I also play football and like basketball, and I have friends who are arrogant in those sports, but there's also a bunch who are not. You can find people in every sport who are down-to-earth, chill guys.

i think a lot of people view lacrosse players as arrogant because the sport gets bashed on by other sports to the point where the laxers start saying things and having little patience towards the other sports. every laxer has had the conversation 80 times too many of why other sports are better and at least from what i've seen it gets to a lot of players to where they start judging the other players too quickly.

my personal response is i've played both. they're both good. and leave it at that because i'm sick of the conversation about it.

In my school in Vermont, most guys tell me that lacrosse isnt a real sport because nobody likes it, then again these(no profanity) are stupid football players. They also say that professional players dont make as much as other pros. Who really cares(besides the NLL) how much they make. Its not about the money, its about the game.

Same here man, only its worse. It's baseball players that give me crap. its stopped since I'm in high school and theres more of us now, but in middle school and I was literally the first kid ever to play lacrosse from my town I had no backup and got it from baseball players alllll day long.\


Every sport has its arrogant jerks.. its unfortuante. Espically baseball though, I dont even consider baseball players real atheletes.(excpet obviously arm strength, but that's not enough)

Hey, I play football and basketball and love both. They are both equally as intense as lacrosse in their own ways, there's no long breaks. Basketball is almost as fast-paced as lacrosse, and football is just something you have to experience to really understand. There may be playbreaks, but its anything but long or calm when you are out there, trust me.

I agree with it personally well generally I mean when we are conditioning in the winter (running on our turf field) and the winter track team is there the captains say like winter track is gay and no one likes it (It is true but still arogant) and our swim team we are no1 in NJ and we were facing no2 in NJ and when we ended practice the captains said we could go there if we wanted even though swimming is gay.

A lot of the kids at my school label lacrosse players as "gay" for some reason. I have had a couple kids say this right in front of my face, and me and my lax buddies just laugh. I think a lot of people dont get what its about. The Duke scandal messed things up because I had a kid accuse me of a " lacrosse raper". I guess its because I live in Michigan and no one knows what the sport is about. So, they are the arrogent ones.

Difference between baseball and lax: baseball has one or two baseballtitutes for the entire team, we have one or two per player. And why not? Statistically we get better grades, get into less trouble, do cooler things, and look better. Plus most baseball players sound like they got hit over the head with a shovel, eeeeeeeeeeeew. BTW even if we don't go pro unlike baseball players we get lots of good jobs. Heck we'll lax on the side!

I get the same attitude a lot of time. People will say "its not an actual sport". Easiest way to respond is to ask them what it is then, and 9 times out of 10 they will say nothing. Ocassionally saomebody will say its a club, which by the letter is true(as we have both a team outside school and a club within school), but all I have to say is ask what that club does.

Taking their own perspective, though I can see where many of them are coming from. Our club is a new program, the sport is relatively unknown out here, and there are few other club sports. Theres a struggling hockey club and of course the numerous soccer clubs, but the prevalence of soccer seems to make people forget that private soccer clubs are the same concept as a clud lacrosse team. I think if we want to get rid of sterotypes that we're arrogant, or doubts to the sports legitimacy, we need to abandon the football.baseball/basketball bashing.

Honestly, we all can spot the idiot players from those teams a mile away. But as somebody else correctly posted, people only remember the bad 5% of athletes on a team. Odds are, we're only seeing the worst 5% of athletes on these teams also. This may not always be the case, but we should realize that saying other sports have dumb, irresponsible players doesnt change anybody else's view on us. If anything, it would promote the arrogant stereotype that we seem to dislike.

If we really want to be recognized more for the positives of our sport, then we need to start showing the positives. The masses will never understand the concept of agility and field awareness that is so crucial to our sport. And frankly, they dont care how difficult it may be to perfectly cover the x-man on his dodge and then roll him into a coma slide. So start showing all the great things about the sport, and those things should start OFF the field. Our school has two campus beautification days during the year, where each club is required to send 2 representatives to volunteer for the morning. I plan on getting our entire team there, all 37 of us(some of which attend different schools) to attend. Things like this are what make lacrosse stand out in a positive note.

Dont blame the Duke Lacrosse scandal for our sport's appearance to the nation. After all, if we look at what happened, we have a lacrosse team who threw a party, became wildly and irresponsibly intoxicated, and then brought strippers! Anybody with a remote degree of intelligence can tell that given those circumstances, eventually something WILL go wrong. Those players acted in poor character and made bad choices that night. The fact that allegations brought against them were false and the District Attorney gravely erred in the trial does not excuse their actions.

As I end this wordy post Ill say this: ultimately, it doesnt matter what sport you play or where you come from. Your gear, your skill, your girls, and your social status wont really matter. You are going to be judged by how YOU act, by how people see your sport from YOU. Nobody even mentioned the Duke lacrosse thing when it was ongoing to me or most of my other teammates. They realized that my team is not the duke team, and that our players are not duke players. But rest assured, they have judged me and my sport by the actions that I have taken.

the deal is this is a terrible thread, some of the stuff i've read has made me sick, dissin on bball players and baseball players, like there's not a lot of cool kids who play those sports, i play lax bball and football. no one treats me different because i play one or thee other, thinkin that playing one sport makes u less arrogant, and playing baseball makes u a tobacco chewing hick is ridiculous

Lacrosse players can be some pretty crazy people at times, but I think they are some of the most humble people of any sport. When joking around and having fun we scream things like making people into a coon hat. But then again you do have to be crazy to play a sport that involves running around a field as fast as you can, carrying a basket on a stick and flinging rubber balls at a square in the middle of the field.
