View Full Version : Best Girl's Tournament Team

You see a lot of the same high school club teams at tournaments. In my opinion, The Long Island Yellowjackets are the best club out there overall, could anyone beat them? I think Skywalkers or CCLax might be able to give them a run for their money.

i do agree that yellow jackets are the best i've seen so far. I have a question and I'm sure it's been posted before but..Which summer tourn is the best for college recruiting?

i dont think yellow jackets are the best. m&d, cclax, skywalkers, heros, nems, etc could all definitely beat them.

I would say its between the LI Yellow Jackets and M and D. Both team are extremely talented and they always have a lot of players.

Skywalkers and M&D are both very good programs, but you don't see them at all the tournaments, almost only showcases. LI is literally everywhere.

The reason M&D isn't at all the tournaments is because they don't waste time. If you look at their rosters they have some of the best talent in the country and all of their graduating team went to sign to play at colleges.
Also, just to keep in mind, most powerhouse MD club teams would beat LI. Just like at the National Tournament-MD beat NY. Now this isn't to downplay talent in NY, 'cause they'd kill a lot of teams and when my team played NY at the Natl Tourney they were amazing. But, M&D, hands down is the best IMO.

N.B.C. is also up there too, and has had a lot of recruits! Also, Rome is pretty strong, and T.L.C., a new team, is looking fantastic! Does anyone know if Ravens is any good? Also, I would like to say that M&D looks awesome, and that SkyWalkers look okay to me, but I have heard some not so great things about them sportsmanship wise etc...
Thanks!
-I'd love to know anyone's thoughts!!

All Stars Express has many of the major club teams, and is a HUGE recruiting tournament-I would DEFINITELY suggest it!

I once heard that a Skywalkers coach got in trouble for wiring his goalie so he could give instructions without using timeouts. It seems really far-fetched to me, but you never knwo I guess. Ravens are definately not on teh same level as M&D and Skywalkers. I've played some crappy and REALLY GOOD NBC teams, so I don't know about them. Rome is a very good program, it seems to me that their girls really grow with the program, they field some really young teams.
laxgirl0108
06-14-2005, 10:48 PM
That's pretty much what I've heard-I didn't think Ravens was on the same level. And I get what you mean about the NBC teams-some are great, while others...-I'm debating whether or not I should switch to another league...I am a goalie, and don't know that any good club teams are looking for goalies...thinking about Rome or maybe Heros...

I'd say that Yellow Jackets, Skywalkers, CC Lax, M&D, and Rome would be the best club teams around. But it would be great to see some other club teams (like from the West or the South) in the future challenge the domination of these teams.

Yeah. So, an update on club teams.
At National Draw, M&D lost to Skywalkers White. It was a great game, really energetic.I was able to watch the tail end of it and the Skywalkers fans/players freaked out. M&D also lost/tied to Metro I think. I don't remember exactly. Their first two games they killed the competition though, so who knows. Maybe they'll do better at All-Star. I'd still say M&D/Skywalkers is the best, as most people here believe.
Also, Skywalkers white is supposed to be the second team to their blue team but one of the parents told me that white has beaten blue a couple of times.
ilaxitup007
06-20-2005, 11:34 AM
yeah skywalkers are definitley mad good. we beat one of the teams in the playoffs, im not sure which it was but then the other beat us in the finals. i really wish i knew if it was white or blue, because then we would know which team was better!
laxordie101
06-20-2005, 05:04 PM
i think it's hard to say which club team is the best, i mean the age groups and club philosophies are all different.
and just to clear something up, the skywalkers 06 blue team is the team that won the championship at national draw, and they crushed long island.
course, then long island tried to disqualify them by saying that there was a player that was not on the roster, which was true, but she had a torn acl and was not playing, so they looked kind of dumb.

It all depends on the age level you are talking about. I think the best team overall is definately Skywalkers '06. They were the only team that we couldn't beat. I'm not sure if we ever have beaten skywalkers, can't rem. But they're definately the most physical. I played on cclax and the only team we had trouble with was skywalkers. M&D, i think we pretty much beat them most of the time. Ultimate goal, tehy're pretty tough too, but we could always match them too. Nems, newlax, rome and all those teams aren't up to the level. i dont think, not yet at least. no offense to any players out there. just my 2 cents.

I'll post because I am on the Hero's board and I hope that I can can clear up some confusion.
There is a Hero's summer rec league in Howard County, Maryland. Its the usual summer rec league, a lot of fun, with players just showing up to play once a week. Teams are by age groups, but are mixed ability, with non-club and club players on each team. Club players come from clubs all over the region. It was started about 25-30 years ago by PJ Kesmodel.
When the summer tournaments started, the only clubs around from here were Skywalkers and a predecessor to CC Lax, and the Hero's All-Stars (which was, literally, a selection of the All Stars from the summer league teams; 3 girls from the pink team, 3 from green, 3 from blue etc). Then about 5 or 6 years ago the summer tournaments took off and PJ, with some other folks, formed an entirely different group to just play in the tournaments. Those are the Hero's teams you see out at All Star Express, etc. Initally the Hero's teams were by invitation only. Then when more girls became interested, about 4 years ago, we went to a try out system to select teams. If you make a team in our Frebruary try-outs, you are on that team for the next year. We are based in the Baltimore area, and our players come from 5 counties. From our 4 high school teams, girls play for 23 different high schools. We decided for a number of reasons to only have one team in each grade/age group.
Depending on the team, we play from 3 to 6 events in the summer, plus two in the fall. Each team practices once or twice each week in June and July. We generally do not practice in the other months. Our philosophy is that too much lax is not always a good thing - go play hockey or soccer for your school, go be in the school play, or hang at the movies with your friends. We will have an indoor team in the winter only if enough players do not have a high school teams to play for (most play for their high schools).
Each team carries 18-21 girls. All the players generally play in each event. Our aim is to showcase players for colleges, so we try to play all the players equally, regardless of the situation. We have a lot of AAU players, so events that conflict with the AAU Nationals may leave a Hero's team a bit short handed (it happened to our 07 team a few times this summer. I suspect that is what the poster meant when saying 'great when the full team was there'). If we enter some thing that is not a standard event, we may enter a team of mixed ages. For instance, our Cup of Nations team was 07 & 08.
We are not even remotely like X Team, which is a group that you can sign up and play with as you go. I don't mean that as an insult; I think X Team fills a great need for players from developing areas. But, we are a long standing program, and in our area, we are a normal club team. There are lots of other low key clubs like us, including some of the ones mentioned earlier on this thread, like NBC and ROME.
Once thing I can say with certainty, after having been involved with club lax for the last 6 years in one capacity or another: There is no one best club. The "best" programs each may have a team or two that is not its usual high caliber; the most middling programs might have a stellar team. The coaches watch the players. The coaches could not care who wins or loses; they only want to see how girls play. Do they have basic athleticism; what are their sticks skills like, and good lord can they PLEASE play some defense. Add into that, how do they act? do they hustle win or lose, are they sportsmanlike; how do they listen to their coach and treat the oppostion? Remember these coaches don't care if you win; they just want to figure out if you are some one they might want to coach for 4 years.
Beyond that, if you want to find the "best" program for you, you have to talk to your parents and decide what type of program best meets what you want out of lacrosse. There is no right or wrong type of program, no good or bad way to do it, there are just different types. And don't forget the social side; while you may want to be with all your friends, some times the best part of club ball is the friendships you make with girls from all over.
I hope that I cleared up some of the confusion about Hero's. Regardless of who you play for, have a great winter, and see you all next summer.

Sky Walkers is a program that you have to try before you decide if you like it or not. Otherwise, you're making a prejudgment. Unfortunately, many people mistake the intenseness of the program for meaness, which is really not the case. I am a Sky Walker, and absolutely love it. "MacLaughlin" (we call him Mr. Mike) is one of the best coaches I have ever had, along with the other Sky Walkers coaches who are also awesome. They are great motivators, and challenge us to learn something new each practice and game. I used to play for NBC, and making the switch between the two teams was interesting. I love both teams; however the philosophies were extremely different.
NBC fields great teams and players, but has an emphasis of equal playing time, working hard, and many of the players play in college. Sky Walkers has two different teams for each year, and also fields great teams and players. However, I think it's something like 98% or 99% play in college, and of the players that do play in college, almost all of them play division 1 lacrosse. As you can see, the two philosophies are very different, it just depends on what you want out of your lacrosse experience.
I will admit that when I was younger, the intenseness of Sky Walkers frightened me a bit, and I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else but NBC. However, once our team had to try out for other teams, out of all the teams I tried out for, Sky Walkers was the most welcoming, had the nicest people, and got me to work harder then I would've at any other team.
I think Sky Walkers "philosophy" may be a little different then what you think.
It actually is- "The mission of Sky Walkers Lacrosse is to instill in every girl the confidence that she has NO LIMITATIONS. Through coaching and mentoring, each Sky Walker understands that her passion to play will give her the power to succeed. Inherent in this knowledge is that success is not individual but comes through team play."
I encourage you to go to the Sky Walkers lacrosse website, and check out what they're really about. Their main goal is to make each girl the best player she can be while playing as a team, as stated above. Of course just like any other lacrosse program, its not for everyone, but the majority of people that play for them love it, and have become better lacrosse players and teammates since joining. I hope that clears up Sky Walker's philosophy and goal of the program!

All those teams have great players, and it's hard to measure from one tournament, although until this year's weather issue, galaxy is a nice get together of the Best Teams
By teh way, the NY! team won the high school division tournament beating every team they played form evey geographic area- all of the playof ames wee grea against a lot of really good players from MD and Mid & Upper Atlantic . and??? just because you show up everywhere doesn't necessarily mean that you're that good. the team i played for only played in tournaments where they thought that the players would be exposed to the most coaches. not to mention the numerous summer camps. just because they see you playing a lot, it doesn't necessarily mean that they'll automatically want you.

In July 2005, M&D 2008 Black won the Galaxy National Championship, beating YJ. June 2006 they won Charm City, beating Skywalkers 07Blue, Lenape 07 and some other very strong teams. Several of their players were selected to the Under-Armour Team. Many of the girls have been named to the various All-County teams. At this point (6/12/07) 4 of them have already committed to play college lax (UNC, Georgetown, 2 for Hopkins).
Despite the idea that M&D is Hebron girls, there are 15 high schools represented on the 2008 Black team. 3 Hebron, 3 McDonogh, 2 Bryn Mawr, 1 Westminster, 1 North Carroll, 1 Bishop Ireton, 1 Catonsville,1 Centennial, 2 Glenelg, 1 Marriotts Ridge, 2 Mount De Sales Academy, 1 Notre Dame Prep, 2 Our Lady of Good Counsel, 1 River Hill, 1 St. Stephen's & St. Agnes.
M&D has 2-3 teams at each grad level. The Black team is the "elite" team, red & white are considered "developmental."
M&D is run by Chris Robinson. He has been the head coach at McDonogh for two years compiling a 34-4 record. He has won an IAAM championship and placed another team in the finals. Before that he was the head coach at Mt. Hebron compiling 5 state championships and two #1 national rankings.
M&D is very selective about which tournaments they travel to... looking for the most college coach exposure. They are also in the Galaxy League, comprised of most of the top programs in the country (M&D, CCLax, Skywalkers, YJ...) The recently added some clubs which are NOT that elite... but whatever.
As far as "best" club team, I think that really depends on the player. Skywalkers is intense. They have a reputation for being too aggressive, violent, etc. But they do place a LARGE number of their players in D1 programs. M&D is a great program. The coaches are very good, positive. They have special training sessions where they bring in clinicians like Michele DeJulius (US team/Asst. coach at Princeton), etc. for specific skills. This year they even have a specialized goalie coach for the program. CCLax always puts out a strong team at the Black level. FS Lax is a fairly weak program. ROME, Check-Hers, Ravens are all NOT at the M&D/Skywalkers/CCLax level. Want proof? Look at what percentage of their girls go on to (1) play at the D1 level; (2) play at one of the top 20 D1 programs. Most clubs websites have a list of where their alumni went on to play...
But in the 2008 class, my money is on M&D black.

Lots of good lax clubs in the east...
Yep, i agree that the m&d 2011 black team is tight. Many great players- fast! But, even more- check out their 2010 black team- speed, power & deep! I'm watching this group.

okay so this is kind of an old bulletin. but i play for heros lacrosse, and i have for the past two years. earlier someone had asked if the stanwick sisters helped coach? and yes, someone commented that they did with covie stanwick on the team for 2011. That is true, I play with covie, and last year sheehan stanwick coached, with the help of sophia (not sure her last name), and sheehans sister coco. However, this year Sheehan is no longer the coach, and Tom Getner is a long with Coach Gordon (whoes daughter plays on the team) and Coach Laura (who used to coach the ..2006?..heroes team). The heroes coaching staff is amazing and extremely experienced. There have been 3 guests at the last 3 practices, including the starting freshman goalie for hopkins, coco stanwick (a 3 time all american, with the record of number of draw possesions at 113, 3 time georgetown attack player of the year, and several other accomplishmets), and the last guest we've had was the UMBC coach, who worked with us a lot.
Heroes 2011 won the top of the bay jamboree tournament, even with half of their players missing playing at a myla conference in florida.
heroes is going to be playing in the kent island tournament this thursday.
anyways, good luck to all the other teams.
some teams that we've played with definite talent that stood out to me include: sywalkers, checkhers, and rome. all three of those games were close ones and i'm looking forward to playing them again in the future

rev used to be good, but their 08 team is not very good and neither are their younger teams. they had a couple good years but have gone down hill since then.

Thier 08 team went undefeated at National Draw until the semi finals and undefeated at All-Star against teams like Rome, M&D, and Yellow Jackets

There are a handful of teams which can be consistently counted on to field quality teams. I would say that the general consensus would be that Skywalkers, CCLax, M&D, and Yellow Jackets could be considered year in and year out the top four club programs. That does not mean that in any particular year that any of the other quality programs (Heroes, Checkhers, Rome, a few others) might not have a team that could beat any or all of them, just that year after year, the clubs that consistently kick out the most competitive teams are those top four.
We just got back from the Galaxy National, where the SW 13 Blue team went undefeated, soundly beating every team they played. Nobody scored more than two goals against them in any game they played, including both YJ teams, CCLax, and M&D. They absolutely dominated, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 52-8 over 6 games played. Was that true of every year? Absolutely not...it is very dependent on the group of girls that happens to come together. The 13 year, for them anyway, clearly looks like a good one.
All of these programs have very good coaching, a good pool of girls typically to draw from, and good relationships and reputation with college recruiters. Outside of those clubs, it can be tougher to stand out and be recognized.

clubs like: TLC, SP Lax, NEMS and Heros. These clubs put together strong teams. I would put the Heros 09 and the TLC 10 Red and SP Lax 10 Blue up against any team.

long island isn't the best. i play for buffalo wings and we just beat their 08 team at their own tournament last weekend. it really depends how well a team is doing at a particular tournament... no one wins every game.

Lets keep an eye on the M&D 2010 Black Team. They are stacked with talent. Tied YJ at Nat'l Draw & beat them for the championship at Galaxy.
There are certain age groups on select top club teams that turn heads.

Every season there are different squads that win in their different age groups from all of the clubs. Each year brings subtle changes in rosters and new opponents.
The battles for the Class of 2008 "A" squads over the years has been between Yellow Jackets Blue, M & D Black, CC Lax Black, Skywalkers Blue and Heroes. All usually hard fought games with any one of those teams winning by a goal or two.
In the 2007 Summer tourney Season the Yellow Jackets had 4 squads playing in the 2008 age group of all of varying abilities.
However the Yellow Jackets 2008 Blue team (A squad) won the Champions Cup - Champions Division, National Draw Varsity Division, Star Spangled Banner Varsity Division, Galaxy Nationals 2008 Division.
As far as not winning at their own "Showcase" Tourney 1/2 the blue team was at the New York State Empire Games and brought home the Gold Medal instead.
Now, we look forward to see former opponents being on the same rosters in college. Good Luck everyone! Thanks for the fun & competition throughout the years

yeah, they are scary, lol. we played them, and they were like wayy violent! I play for the Florida Lady Possums 2011 team [we dont play very rough in FL] but used to live in MD and grew up there. Were like the only team from florida, and were just started last year, and we have middleschoolers-seniors each on their own team, but all supporting us. Were a travel team with players from all over the state of florida. We were at the USTC tournament in October and another one in november in Maryland. Come see us play, you have to be invited or tryout to be on the team, visit www.coachmccord.com
we have amazing players!
haa... I play for the 2010 team... one of the goalies
