Hey, I just started summer league a few weeks back, and my coaches from school and a couple people had told me to try goalie, so I did. It was acutally pretty fun, but I love playing defense too (coverpoint). What should I do? Any ideas? Our varsity team (girls) already has a pretty good goalie for next year I think.... but I did seem to take to it pretty well, and what team doesn't need a goalie? Not sure what to do. I'm 6'1", and I'm a pretty strong girl. Any opinions about what I should do?

play full time goalie all summer and if you decide you really like it play goalie because it might seem like a bad thing that the varsity team already has a goalie but its not!! you can learn from her and after she leaves and you fill her spot you can become better then she was. be her apprentice and work hard!! i say go for goalie. also not trying to be rude but if your coaches are telling you to try goalie you must not be much of a coverpoint. but seriously im not trying to be rude but if your coaches are telling you to try a different position maybe you should go with a different position

No that's a really good point. My one coach (the one who never really went to games) told me just to give it a shot, but the coach we had that coached games would always tell me to go play coverpoint and I started every game this season. I don't mean to sound stuck up of anything, but I'm actually pretty good and I'm getting a lot better. I think my practice coach only suggested it because our other goalie never really showed up to practices and such, and she's younger. For all I know, my game coach could be lying, but she always gave the the impression that she loved to play me on defense because I was a good defensive player. That's why I don't know what to do.
EDIT: Also, this is our first year on "varsity"... it's still club.. we just have JV and Varsity teams. But anyway, nobody has ever played JV or Varsity before, it will be our first year playing other schools officially. So nobody really know what to expect quite yet (altough we all pretty much know who's gonna make it and who's not... for the most part).

well I think this just died, but thanks for the advice. I'm for sure gonna try it out and see what happens... but I do have to decide kinda soon, because I gotta return my new stick if I'm gonna go goalie. I'm meeting with my coaches for summer league Tuesday and we're gonna go through drills and see how I do in a game Thursday. Thanks again for the advice!

Even if you already have a goalie it would be good for you to play both. Switch up in practices. I was in the same exact situation (playing defense and considering goalie) and I decided to switch to goalie b/c the shuffling for defense was wearing on my knees (crappy genes). 2 games in to the season our starting goalie broke his collarbone and was going to be out the entire season. I was able to step in and we won state. So even if you wont be playing it all the time, it might be worth the while to keep practicing just in case.

Hey, the more positions you can play, the more useful you are to your team. And what happend when the starting goalie is cold, and cannot make a save? What happend when she gets hurt?
>The more sticks and positions you practice at, the more your develop each and every facet of your game.
It really can't do anything but help you. Especially if you're picking it up quickly.

I really think you all have a point. Knowing both could never hurt, thanks so much for the advice. If anyone else wants to add, please feel free, but I think as of now, I'll just keep improving on both positions. Thanks so much!

I may be a little biased here, but I think being a goalie is probably the best position in lacrosse, but every-so-often I feel the need to do a little running around since my coaches cringe whenever I leave the crease. So what I would do is practice being a goalie, but in games you can play defense while your other goalie is in the cage.

the goalie of our class is there mostly b/c we were at intramurals and we needed another goalie...the seniors were yellin for some freshman to step up and he was the only one with the balls. good for him, hes ended up pretty good.
the moral of the story is, you can get pretty good pretty fast.

This is true, check out Nolan. Not that I'm gonna be anywhere near THAT kind of talent, but why not just try it out right? I'm excited.. but it's still confusing. Can I do both? Does it make sense to do both? Which do I train for at camp in August?

you can do both...but you probably should develop some goalie skills so you can not suck while you try the position. i tried starting out at attack and i went to the long pole b/c the stick skills werent coming along and i doubted i would ever have them...what i'm sayin is get the skills BEFORE you decide on positions.
