During one of our games, we had alot of people shooting from or near the top of the crease. I was the goalie and i was usally left to face these shots alone. Should I have gone up and stuffed them with my goal stick or should I have waited and let them shoot and try to make a quick split second save? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

go up. from an attacker, I can tell you that point blank is pretty hard to miss. But if the goalie's putting pressure on you, it makes you decide what to do more quickly, and sometimes players cant handle that pressure. if the goalie just stands there, it's easy to pull out a fake or two then just toss it right past them.

Go after the guy. If he's just chilling on the crease, he's waiting for it. And you have a better chance of going out on the guy than making that split second save.

If he's right on the crease, go up to him, stick on stick. Don't mirror the body, mirror his stick.

Yeah, I'd say stuff. Normally I'm a sit back and wait guy but a few games ago I made a save right at the crease, I just put my stick over his, he shot low and it hit off my knee.
I'l going to kind of high-jack this thread and ask for help on making saves right over your head. I'm pretty short (5'4, upcoming junior) and last game the same shooter shot right over my head twice. I couldn't get my stick in position and I tried jumping to cover the area but that didn't help.

yup same here. Just make sure youre lined up in the middle before you come out. A trick i learned is to stay back in the net until the play gets near the blue line the ncome out on teh guy. U cna apply this in lacrosse. Think halfway between teh box and midline.
Also if u go out and are mirroring the guys stick and hes not shooting then lay him out. i've seen goalies come out to mirror me and i just run them over or shoot over them.

If the shooter's close enough to you, throwing a stick check or body hit might be the right answer.
I dunno, though, if a shooter has the ball on the crease in field, it's basically 70-30 odds against the goali!

If you rely on the split second save, you might be able to make one in thirty if that. Unless you are truely gifted, you'll want to come out for the stuff. Pratice your timing though. If you go too early, they'll place it around you. If you go too late your left to your natural ability. If you go at the right time, it will look like the attacker shot it right to you. It's pretty sweet to do.

If it's just you and the guy shooting, lay him out, or go stick on stick with him. If your d is moving across to slide, move out a little, but don't get in the way of your d (i've been plowed over by my d many times, they're hardcore sliders, taking out 1/2 the offense in a coma slide). If he's covered, it's sometimes a good choice to hold your position. As you run into better players, you'll find that coming out works less and less, because better shooters are good at getting off quick shots around keepers. Playing shots on the crease/in close all comes w/ experience, you need to learn how players react to what, but generally speaking, if it's just you and him there, plaster his butt. Put him in the supine(sp) position and make him feel it! Eventually he won't wanna take it anymore and he'll wuss out, or think about it for a sec next time, before he steps into your house.
and to Pulse, dude, just try to stay big in the cage, i'm only an inch taller, and i was the same height all through highschool. I've been scored on there A LOT! Stay big and have people work on shooting there during practice and stuff, you really have to watch the ball because usually you don't, or at least i didn't, follow the ball completely into the stick, but when you take shots like that, you have to, because it's an awkward save to make (i dubbed it the 6-hole in highschool), and it's really the only shot where you have to move your head (the one on your shoulders) a considerable amount to watch the ball go into the stick.

Go stick on stick and with your bottom hand push into his body. If you can knock him on his ***, but if not a good push should make him drop the ball right into your stick. If you do knock him down you have to stand over him and stare him in the eyes. It's awesome.

if you find that you were late and you have to start mirroring his stick then keep mirroring but step towards him until your right there on him

This is where you have to be a goalie. You have to use your instincts to make the save. Also, attackmen are suposed to score on one-on-ones so if you stuff them then that's sick but if you don't then no buddy can really blame you.

NO!!! you should never throw a stick check on one-on-ones, a body check, is good but if you throw a stick check the shooter will be quick enough to see it coming and shoot wherever your stick isn't (Which is 99% of the net)

I would say Stuff, Waiting they will have ample time to fake the bajeezes out of you, which is never good. If you run out at them, they might panic and make a bad shot, or they wont fake or anything, and that shot will be easily readable.

Hit them away.

Just remember that all the pressure is on the attackman in these situations. Main thing to do is stand still and try to save the shot, or let the defender kill him. If he scores, dont worry about it because you are not really expected to save the shot. BTW from previous attackman experience it is a lot easier to pop the ball right around the goalie when they try to stuff you.

man at camp i had the best hit (illegal as it is).
the attacker was camping on the creas and he reciving a feed. i knew i wouldnt be able to stop it since he was the best on their team and it was point blank. so while he was still facing the other way i started moving, and right when he turned around BAM!!!! cross check to the facemask. i didnt get a penalty for that even though it was double illegal.
oh and by the way i vote for stuffing him on the crease, just make sure he doesnt toss it over your shoulder or anything.

you try to force your stick to his head, so try to cover it. if you dont cover it and force it down or save it, give him a "love" tap and break him.

Jump sooner. You want to be as big as possible the second the shot is released.

DONT JUMP! once you leave your feet, you have lost all opportunity to change your direction.
if you get the reputation as a jumper all the shooters will fake hi to get you to jump, once youve left your feet, they are free to put the ball anyplace they like
you need to spend some time in goal and have a coach or teammate shoot hi on you to work on that mechanic.

fair enough. but leaving your feet should probably be your last option.

What I do, and what Bill Pilat reccomends is to wait, the shooter wants to challenge you when you come out. I f you wait he will over run it and hopefully get nervous. Duck down really low bait him, he will see the high part and shoot for it right as he releases snap up to smuther the shot. do the same baiting thing but with a side. Go near the post then hope to the side to rob the shot.

Stay in. Wait for the shooter to rush his shot. wait for him to pass. wait for a d-pole to catch up and crush him. If you go out, the shotter can just wrap it around you. It may sound illogical, but staying in will really take control of the situation. Plus, when he's right at the crease he can't really rip it as hard. Just follow his stick and not his eyes and you'll be in good shape.

i like the baiting, as well that seems to give you the best shot at making the save. someone has already mentioned this but the pressure is on the shooter, not you. i went to pilats camp and he also recommends not flinching or falling for fakes but to be still and hold your stance.

if the attackman is sitting on the crease with the ball, punish him, send him to the dirt. The longer time he has to aim and set his feet, the more of a chance he is gonna score...odds are that the shooter is gonna win over the goalie because we have to save a little ball from going into a 6 by 6 goal. If you knock his lights out, odds are, he won't want to come onto the crease again...also, you gotta yell at your defense after this series is over, no way should someone be sitting on the crease with no stick or a body on him. Also, make sure before you hit him, to get your stick infront of his, so his shot will get stuffed and not go in the goal. and even if he scores, shake it off and make that big save in the next series.

Stuff that mother like a Thanksgiving Turkey, I say. I dont tackle the guy, but go stick-on-stick. Baiting has never really worked for me, but im still working on it.
