Not a great idea to try and take on the goalie, who d protect regaurdless, by yourself.

box owns field, field you have to a 6 foot space in box you get about 6 inches to put a ball thats 2.5 inches, box you need to have deadly accuracy and be able to throw your weight around, field you dont have to have acuracy and you can just run around guys. BOX IS KING!

yea u get a big good goalie its more like u have 0.5 inches to put a 2.5 inch in diametre ball. I dont mind playing field but these kids from teh US on here should come up here and play some real lacrosse and see who leaves crying and running back to their moms with ice all over their bodies. You guys taht just sit on here and talk crap but id really like to see what would happen. I bet a team from southern ontario full of 10 year olds would kick the crap out of a team of 13 year old field players.

People can talk all they want but when it comes to backing it up you guys turn tail and run. can u say (female dog)

Don't think that box is just a street fight with lax sticks. Its a very tough game, played by very tough people. But there is an immense amount of skill that goes into the close quarters and hostile environment that box creates. To be able to maintain control of an offense in any way, shows a player's mettal more than anything that any other lax genre can do.

Personally I like the box game but I think your oversimplifying the field game. Sure its not as tough physically but the size of the net and larger field are offset by longpole defensemen and the sheer number of players on the field. Fighting aside, you will get the smackdown put on you if your an attackman coming across the crease in field. I've played in some pretty nasty field games, although maybe its different nowadays. A lot of field kids would adapt to box just fine but there isn't the opportunity in the states. When is the US gonna get some real summer box going? I find it hard to believe New York and PA don't have enough interest.

Hooligan

Philadelphia has the "Philly Box League" which is supposed to be a box league. But it ends up being a modified field indoor league. Its probably the closest thing we have in the Philly area to real boxla.

I'm hoping to get some real money together, and make my way up to Ontario for a summer, get the info I need, and get a real box league started in the suburban Philadelphia area. I have the ability as a teacher to take that time, but I need some money for the trip and stay. I'd love to watch some junior/senior games, and work with a team for the summer...

(not gonna play. that ability has far left me...)

There is a good box league in Baltimore at Du Pern/burn (not sure of name) arena. Lot of pro and D1 players. Sort of an American proving ground for up and comers. Also a pretty decent league in rochester too but limited contact makes it kinda boring. Upstate New York has several "real" junior box organizations on the indian reservations as offshoots of the Can-Am senior B teams. Outside of that I don't know of anyplace for non-indian young players to get experience in the states. It's all like Hooligan says "modified" box.

Im from cali and i have played box, field and indoor. I played box against canadians and u guys r so much more aggresive i remember coming out of the box and getting a wooden stick to my throat and i didnt have the ball and in field that would have been a penatly but box thats legal. What i thought was even better though is that i was aloud to hit him back for wut he did to me. Even though u definitly get more beat up in box i like it way more then field. Im kinda sad i wont be able to play on the box league i did last year and travel up to canada because im to old but box is definilty a sick (do not curse) game and for any of u that havent played it try it before u talk smack because i respect everyone who plays box espically offensive guys they take a beating.

that maybe true but it is their game after all and they play it with a passion that we seem to not under stand, they play with a true "win at all costs" mentality, and they where their hearts on their sleaves. and also the best and most highly skilled families to ever play the game are native, the powlesses, the bomberies, the squires, the bucktooths(14 on ondaga jr.b team in 2002, they were up 2 games to 0 on the green gaels and the gaels had home floor the last three games and beat them 3 games to 2).

In basketball they tend to just take the ball and drive to the net. How is that more teamwork then box?

Hooligan
11-19-2005, 03:10 PM
Box lacrosse incorperates more teamwork than any other sport I've ever witnessed...

I'm not sure I follow how field has more "teamwork" than box, seeing as how guys like Mark Millon, Casey Powell and now Mike Powell (all known ball-hogs) are considered super-stars in their genre of the sport.

But it is all personal opinion. If you're raised on field, you tend to think its better. If you're raised on box, you tend to know the others are wrong.

Enjoy!

Oh and just a quite note for all those on the West coast who have never seen Tower fight: I've seen him in a couple dozen tilts and this is the first once he's ever 'lost.' Don't let this video determine how tough you think this guy is!

Fellas,

This brings up and important issue that I have been dealing with for years. I am an American box lacrosse advocate, player and organizer.

Being from the Baltimore/DC area, field lacrosse is king. The purists have been very resisitent to box. It has cost us the Wave, Thunder and the Power which was a personal blow because my brother played for them and I worked for them. For years, I have fought the various stigmas about "bad habits (using only one hand)", fighting and the danger of the boards.

I personally had a hand in the demise of the current league I am attempting to resurect. I am 6'1, 225 and was a goalie for the first 5 years I played box. I then got bored and came out in to the field and became and enforcer and beat the living s*** out of a number of players because I thought thats how the game was played. I know now that this was a mistake and I am older and wiser.

I'm not sure what my point is here but I know I really want to sell the box game to the American lacrosse population, see the NLL grow and be able to play until I'm 60. It seems that fighting is part of the sport in Canada but it will never be accepted in the USA until this is controlled. The NLL has put in VERY strict rules for this season and we have addressed it as well on an amateur level. You get a major penalty, match penalty and a 1 game suspension for the first fight, goen for the season for the second.

Last year, and American team went to Canada to play in a senior B invitational. The team was comprised of former NLL players and many guys who played for Team USA in the WILC.. The team was so poorly received by the players and refs that they did not return this year. There was a player who got a concussion and another that got a broken vertebrae from boarding that wasn't called. We retaliated and got thrown out of the game.

Again, I'm not sure what my point is. I just know that I love the game and just trying to share some of the setbacks that we have had with the box game.

In basketball they tend to just take the ball and drive to the net. How is that more teamwork then box?

Actually, you're right. There is no aspect of team work in basketball, especially not things like fast breaks or swinging around the arc to set up a 3. There is also no such thing as a pick in basketball either. All they do is run down the court and dunk, which explains why the scores of games are about 201-202. Whoever can make that last dunk (and one, because fouling seems to be the only defense to stop someone from running down the court and going to the net) will always win.

I just had a talk about this with some friends. In Canada, people seem to realize its a natural part of the game to get physical and occasionaly it comes to blows. In the US, the kids are being raised as pussies. Parents sheild them in a bubble their whole, youthful life. I see hockey tourneys here, and you can see a toughness in the canadian kids eyes, even the young ones. They go that extra bit harder, work that extra bit more, and arent afriad to take a tumble. I know HS field kids out here terrified to get near a ground ball, until recently when the Oregon lacrosse culture has seemed to embrace a more east coast style of play. Its too flashy for here. Oregon should be logger lacrosse, as my old man used to call it, not this nancy-boy, stick twirling crap you see on TV. Id love to see a box league start here, but with the reaction of parents when two HS kids in an indoor game squared off, they would all pull their kids out. I talked to the league about starting a mens box league, and they basically said I need to come to them with enough peopel who want to play, because they are all scared.
my two cents...

Due to the style of play (more like hockey) stick speed isn't as important as it is for a field goalie.

So, the woodies are favoured by many because they close the five-hole (between the legs) better than the tupperware sticks do.

The only drawback with wood is that, due to their weight, you can't finish a breakout pass as quickly.....trade-off, stop more shots but fewer fast breaks.

middieman1
03-24-2006, 09:24 PM
Do they close fivehole because they're longer or just because of the shape?

It seems that fighting is part of the sport in Canada but it will never be accepted in the USA until this is controlled.

I hope it's never accepted in the US. The game will grow where people have a passion for Box Lacrosse. I hope the NLL drops off the face of the planet tomorrow. The Networks and US Ownership has taken Box Lacrosse and molded it into their own little league of marketable dolls. Field players that could never play a season in the MSL or the WLA. There was talk of a broken vertebrae ....... Canadian Senior Lacrosse would send them south in body bags.

Don't try to cure the box game, don't try to change the box game to suit your needs, don't amend the rules so that your players can be more effective within it's borders. Just play field.

We have kids 7 years old playing full contact lacrosse in Canada. Properly protected and properly instructed we don't get alot of broken bones and concussions. It's when a group of uninitiated, unskilled, untrained, and poorly versed people get together and challenge a skilled box team that people get hurt, and yes, more often than not they get called all game for retaliation penalties on legal checks.

The new rules will only serve the poorly skilled. Those that do not know how to play box lacrosse. And, with them the NLL with further *******ize the game of Box Lacrosse. Soften it up so that players that would normally watch a majority of the game from their shorts will now rack up points. They already made the nets bigger so that field players might score on them and took wooden sticks out of the hands of box goalies. No off ball checks anymore and god forbid you set a pick. Now you want to take fighting and push suspensions on players? Why so that the tough guys will be dropped off teams to make room for more field players? How many Powells are there?

There are Masters leagues up here for people too old to play Major Series Lacrosse. We don't hit alot but the odd check is still thrown between two guys that know each other can take it. And those guys know each other because they grew up hitting each other. Even at older ages in Canada we don't pick up lacrosse sticks if we plan to dance around and showboat, hoping we don't get hit all night.

That was brilliantly written OldPtboBoy.

Why alter the game to make it more acceptable to Americans. If they don't like the idea of men beating on each other for 60 minutes then don't play box!

The reason fighting is able to exist in our games is becasue we do it right. From the moment we start watching the pros we see them fight. We see their form, the way they grab on to each other, the way they are able to back off when it goes "too far".

A little history here; In 1987 at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship, Canada and Russia had a bench brawl (youtube the video). The Canadians were fighting like they know how and the Russians were kicking (with skates on!) because they were never brought up to learn the proper way to engage in fistacuffs.

Just so we don't hijack another thread, I'll try to upload some of my fight vids in a few days.

OldPtboBoy

The ice will be going in at the Mem Centre soon. I'm not sure of the exact date, but I'm sure the carpet (the "Ugliest Carpet In The World!" and damn proud of it) will be seen in the MSL playoffs. The Petes will start their training camp very soon and don't like (also have a contract with the city and arena) to start their camp at any of our other fine hockey arenas. Aparently, it's to show the young talent what a fine organization and building they have. I keep asking why the fine organization wont allow the National Champions to use the building until they are through, but that would just be too logical. Any way, the Petes will probably need all the practice that they can get this year too. (looks like another rebuilding year)

All time greatest game ever! God I love the MILL..." Hooligan

CHYEAAAH, gotta love them tight shorts lol. half way through that vid you can see, who im guessing is Dallas Eliuk ( last name on his jersey) start pulling a buddy back. the funny thing is Dallas's pads havnt got any bigger, hahaha, it's like he's still using the exact same pads !!

oh ya, well said OldPtboBoy, i know a couple people that played back in the 80's and 90's and they share your exact some opinion. They absolutely hate the NLL and despise what its done to the game. And in some ways i agree, but then again, i dont. Simply because of what the NLL is, and that's a National Lacrosse League, not a WLA, or OLA or even RMLL ( local league :P). The NLL is nationwide, and its allowing everyone else in North America to witness what an amazing and passionate sport this is, and something that does that, i really can't honestly complain about, even if it now has referee's that throw flags for penalties, and goalies that earned their spot simply by size, and not by calibre. Haha, I could rant about everything I don't like about the NLL for the rest of the night, but I think i managed to convey my message, as confusing and strange as it was.lol.
