Yeah, but in the long run(hah get it, the long run...:laugh ) treadmills actually are very helpful. Because yo can change th speed, you can alter how much effort you put into it, and not only that but you can modify how long or how far you want to run. So if you are starting again, and want to run and gradually go farther, you can modify that on a treadmill. But with regular running, you have to do more work with how long you want to run...and then you have to travel back. So treadmills help, in the long run:laugh :laugh :laugh .

If your not throwing up, your not pushing yourself.
Well I was very sick in high school and therefore was not able to play for a four years, so I can tell you what I know from being idle physically. I think the first thing to do when you're out of shape is get moving. You always see people say "push yourself to the max, be the best ever, run till you need an IV," etc, but when you're not physically capable you simply can't do that. Michael Jordan can only do that after he's had years of previous conditioning. So the first thing would be find a way to get moving every day, even if just a little, for at least like a half hour. When I first came back I went at it hard and burned out in a couple weeks. Recently I've tried playing basketball on off days, which is still pretty intense, and going at it hard one or two days a week. Like in school, you don't take an important test every day, to do well you work at a considerable level for a while (regular hw) then push it every now and then (exams). So after a few weeks of just doing something physically you'll probably be able to push it a little harder, and you can go from there. I think the best advice I can give is to plan ahead. I thought I would be able to get back out there in 3 weeks, it's been 6 and I'm still gaining steam, and I'm still not where I'd like to be. You'll probably gain faster than I do, since I had been sedentary by default for a while and have to take medicines that slow me down, but at the same time it takes longer than you think. So I don't know how much time you have before your season, but now is the time to lay the groundwork so you WILL be able to do the hard work necessary to be properly fit. Let me know how it goes though, I'd be interested to see how it turns out.

get your rump off the computer and do some jumpin jacks! really, moving around constantly even if your not running, will help your body build stamina!
also... cut down on the beer if you drink... i know people with that problem! yuck...
