View Full Version : Lacrosse Stadiums?

How many colleges or high schools have stadiums whose primary purpose is for lacrosse? I heard University of Denver is building a lacrosse-only stadium, which would be perfect for the new Denver team (too bad they're probably stuck at cavernous Mile High), though will this think have an ugly track around it?
Also, I'm wondering what you guys think about soccer stadiums for MLL? I saw the games at Crew Stadium and Home Depot Center and thought that those venues were great for lacrosse, though 20,000-25,000 seats may be too much.

The DU stadium is done. I went to camp at DU this summer, so I got to play on it. It's decent, but not great. The field itself is pretty nice (turf), except for the big swamp right next to it and the really ugly all bronze annoucer's booth. And there's no track; there isn't even enough room because its about a foot from the far sideline to the slope down into the swamp/drainage ditch.

the Denver team will play at Mile High since Pat Bowlen owns the team. and if ur thinking of the old Mile High they torn that down like 5 years ago.

What a crappy situation. Denver MLL won't have to worry about paying rent but even 10,000 fans are gonna look like nothing when they're put in Mile High (I know it's INVESCO but that name sucks). Just ask Rapids (MLS) fans about their hate of this stadium.
Speaking of the Rapids, they're also moving into a 20,000 seat soccer stadium. If it was Kroenke, not Bowlen that bought the team, Denver would play there. It's in Commerce City, which I heard is the crappiest city in Colorado, but the stadium is part of a development project.
Anyway, although Mile High is in a great location with great amenities, it's the worst possible place for an MLL team. It also sucks even more that there is one great alternative (U of Denver) and a decent one (Rapids' stadium)

i would rather have the games at Mile High then go to Commerce City which is one of the crappiest city in Colorado. plus Mile High is alot closer for me than Commerce City. and who cares what the rapids fans think of Mile High

You'd better be because right now, they are higher on the pecking order in this nation than any prospective MLL team and your beloved Mammoth. I am a diehard soccer fan and a so-so lacrosse fan. If lacrosse (or rugby for that matter) is going to get anywhere in this country, it is going to have to pay rent to MLS teams to play in their soccer-specific stadiums unless they want to keep playing at colleges or high schools or pay very high rent to the NFL. MLS had to pay its dues at pointyball fields and suck up to the NFL owners to even have a major league place to play. Now, MLS is to a point to where they have homes built or being built for almost every team in the league. You lacrosse guys are going to have to drop the attitude and realize where you are right now and react accordingly. The whole westward expansion of MLL is going to be a lot easier and looked at as more successful and bigtime because 3 of the 4 MLL teams are going to be playing in the new stadiums of MLS teams. I love ALL sports and hate it everytime a certain person tries to hate on another sport. If you don't like something, keep it to yourself or at least be nice about it. If it were up to me, all sports would have the same salary cap and the same amount of fans and TV coverage. It is very sad that this is not the case, however. I am starting to get into lacrosse a little bit - the goalies need more padding or just any padding to even give the defense a chance- but people like you make me want to hate it. Even if you come back and say that I misinterpreted what you said or went off by one simple comment. Who cares. Everyone who is a fan of soccer, lacrosse, and rugby need to hear this. These three sports have to work together if they are going to be anywhere near as popular as the the "Big 4".
All I can say is, Chris Berman is the perfect sports fan.

Great words Bama Boy. But since Denver MLL is owned by the owner of Mile High, there should be no rent issues. And are you sure Mr. Big? Denver MLL would have to pay rent at Rapids' stadium.

That's what I read. The two (Rapids and MLL) will share Mile High until the soccer stadium is completed, then they BOTH move into the Soccer stadium. Has the Broncos owner any ties to the Rapids owner?

Well, Kroenke and Bowlen are part owners of the Crush AFL team. I just found that out now, so maybe Kroenke will give the MLL Denver team favorable rent. Maybe MLL games will get onto the Altitude Sports Network, which is owned by Kroenke.

Very good points except for one thing; You statement: "If lacrosse (or rugby for that matter) is going to get anywhere in this country, it is going to have to pay rent to MLS teams to play in their soccer-specific stadiums" is not entirely accurate. MLS teams pay rent to the facility management/owners, and that is based on one of two things: a contractual agreement with the individual team and/or revenue sharing contingencies or a league contractual agreement and if the league helps pay the rental fees. If a MLL team did play in the same venue as a MLS team, they would be paying rent the same way. The MLS team would see no monies at all.

Is any other MLL team's venue worse than Rochester's? There's a reason you never see a Rochester home game on TV. The field has a lot of dirt and the bleachers look like a high school field. Oh, wait. It IS a high school field. For this fan's pay the 2nd highest ticket price in the league plus $3 a car for parking! Very disappointing for a good lacrosse town.
On the other hand there's hope that things improve when they move into PaeTec park with the USL Raging Rhinos

The Rattlers will be alright once they move to PAETEC. The place may be a little big (like 18,000 seats) but it'll be world class. And even though they're secondary tenants, they won't be neglected or pushed around, since their owner owns the stadium. But as the MLL season increases in games, there will be schedule conflicts with the Rhinos for weekend games, and the Rhinos will get first choice in dates.

The NY Jets and NY Giants are able to work it out, so the Rhinos and Rattlers should, too.

Exactly, same problem that came up when the Nats moved to RFK. They had to train the ground crews to do be able to change from soccer piych to baseball field on short notice while adjusting team schedules so one was away while the other was home. It shouldn't be too difficult to work out.

Yes I am a huge Umass fan and I go to almost all their games but Hopkins is a close second in favorites for me. But I personally think Garber is harder just because of the atmosphere and how packed it in and how nuts the fans are. I've been to homewood and I like it their also as well but Garber is just crazy and their were so many upsets their this year. Also you said obviosly its not because Umass hasnt made it to a final four in a while that has no relivance because only it is rare that you play at home all through the playoffs and let me remind you Umass didn't lose any home gamkes and they lost to hopkins in the quarters not because they were at homewood but because Hopkins is a better team simple as that.

To answer the original question, UAlbany is building a lacrosse only turf field.
roycegracie47 - I assume you train jiu-jitsu? Where do you train? I try to make a few seminars with Royce each year.

I can't seem to find anything about this. Do you have any links or info about capacities, opening date, or maybe even concept sketches?

I believe this will be more of a field with Bleachers, rather than a stadium, but it is a lacrosse specific facility. Here's a link...

Wow, it'd great if they actually showed us those concept pictures. But really, any college stadium under 30,000 seats is pretty much a field with bleachers anyway.

Really, you sure seem to be talking about it an awful lot. No one attacked your sport, so why are you attcking someone else's? You can not be in denial of the level lacrosse is on in our country and the world. MLS is better off in this country money-wise and fan-wise than lacrosse. It is known more around the world, too. Lacrosse is growing everyday (just like soccer and rugby) so just relax and know that one day lacrosse will be just about on par with the other major sports in the US. You would make a terrible salesman because when you are selling things, you do not trash the competition, you only talk abot how great your product is. If you do that, it will eventually become apparant that yours is better - at least you will be respected. I like lacrosse and do not hate. I just do not understand why you are such a Jim Rome clone. Soccer is a beautiful, fun, challenging, and addictive game. So is lacrosse. Your teams will be playing in all the new soccer stadiums or its back to college or MLL can pony up the 80 million itself (the cost of Pizza Hut Park) for the new Dallas team for its own home. Lets just love sports and leave it at that.

Ok, is there like some sort of censorship with college lacrosse stadium pictures or something? This really blows that I can't find ANY pictures. I'm going to guess that the top college lacrosse stadiums are high quality lacrosse-only fields with bleacher seating on 1-2 sides with concessions under the seats.
