Extra leather length (cut,tape down?)

The girls on the lacrosse team at my high school have been weaving the extra length of the leathers through the heads of their sticks, but I'm pretty sure that's illegal because it makes the stick have more than four thongs. What do most of you guys do with the ends of the leathers? (I know that might not have made much sense, but I'm hoping you know what I'm talking about)

Knot them well, then tape them down around the throat of the head. I wouldn't suggest cutting them too much if you are though, you never know if you will need that extra but to keep it tight or loosen it up and all. I would just tape it down after knotting and what not around the throat.

I think it depends on what head you have, because personally I tread mine through the holes at the throat and tie them off in the back, like this:

Yep, that's pretty much what I do with all my heads but I put tape around it too if I can't totally tie them all off.

I tie mine through like that pic. too but STX actually makes a velcro shindig piece that fits where the shaft meets the head and hold the thongs as tight as you want. and i would have a picture or website to show you but the two websites that i know have it are BOTH down right now

yeah i do that too. ^^ when i first started playing i used to braid them, but i like putting them in the throat.

i just sort of tie mine randomly and retie them when they come undone. u used to doa ll sorts of cool things but i just got too lazy...

I cut them. You need to be careful when cutting a men's stick, because sometimes you need the extra length if your leathers shrink cause you haven't taken care of them after using them in the rain. As for the women's sticks I have, I cut those too. Women's sticks never need to be longer...and even if they do a tiny length of leather is all that's required. What happens more often then not is sticks are improperly maintained and you end up stretching the leathers out too much so a legal pocket is not possible without re-stringing. Don't be afraid to cut your strings on your stick, you'll do no harm. A bunch of my kids braid them, some tape them, some work them through extra holes and in and out of things. Whatever is functional for you that doesn't get in the way should be sufficient.

Yes - weaving the extra length back through the head is illegal.

Would not suggest taping them down, need to adjust your stick and your fooling with the tape to get it off. Try using an elastic headband, works great and it you need to make an adjustment the come off easy.

Just cut em. Leave about 2-3 inches of leather, incase the stick needs adjusting.

Taping it down just adds on a miniscule ammount of weight that's not necessary. Unless you like your lacrosse stick to have a ponytail (I guess that goes back to the whole stereotypical "girls like playing with dolls" thing), just cut em.

instead of the sticky athletic tape around my shaft, i braid my 4 strings on my apex and end them by tying a hairband around the end of the braid. then so the braid won't flap all ova i take thin colored string (found at any craft storeto match the stick) and over the hair tie and shaft i wrapt it around where the head and shaft meet. if that makes any sense
