I was just wondering what the general consensus on box/indorr/NLL lacrosse is like with all you field players (mostly US). Lets not pick hairs and differentiate box vs. indoor vs. NLL lacrosse. I'm referring to them all as one separate entity of lacrosse from its brother field lacrosse. I LOVE box lacrosse and it is my favourite of the two, and I also consider it most marketable. However, I also have a great respect and interest in field lacrosse. I think field players should also think the same of box lacrosse. I plan on playing field this fall for the first time. I think if field and box players could show a mutual appreciation for the game lacrosse as a whole could grow much faster. Not only that, but if people played both forms of the game, there would without question be greater lacrosse players in the future as both forms of the game have skills that can benefit your game in field and box.

i dont like it as much as field. The goalies wear wayyyyy too much equiptment, they dont even have to move to touch the ball.

I like the fast paced, hard hitting play of inddor lax. Loved the 2 games on ABC (liked the All Star Game better). But I think that College/ MLL is better.

I like all lacrosse, but I've always kind of viewed box as a game of hockey without skates...Although I never played goalie, I think it's cool that goalies have a lot more mobility and leeway to run around in field as opposed to box. Field also is a much more spacious game and gives more opportunity for dodging and such...in box it seems like it's just guys running with the ball and crashing into eachother.
I also like the fact that Field has the longpoles.
Clearly, I prefer Field to Box by a large margin. But Box is cool too.
As long as I get to face-off, I'll take anything.

Im a box goalie and its not like that at all. Players in box get MANY shots a game, and many are from close range, or can go in as result of screens cuz the defence sets up a house like in basketball. Players have no problem scoring on box goalies even if they have large equipment. Good players shoot low anyways where the goalie has least bulk. I love making a nice save. You use your body and legs much more in box to stop that ball than you do your stick unless its between your legs or a bounce shot. I wouldnt say either box or field goal is easier or harder.

The best goalies in the world only stop 75% of shots.

Yeah there is hardley any box down here so i havent really had a chance to play. But it looks like a realy fun game to play. I've seen a few NLL games and they are great to watch.

I LOVE box lacrosse and it is my favourite of the two, and I also consider it most marketable.

In the US, I am not so sure that box is more marketable. The opportunities for kids to immulate their heros is much greater in field lacrosse, as there are more ops to play field. In Canada, without a doubt the box game is more marketable. I'm not suggesting that box isn't marketable in the States, but just less than field. I love them both, finding qualities that made me play sports in both games, but I lean towards field because of my exposure levels. They're both great games.

I like box just as much as I like field although I've never had much of a chance to play it beyond just settling for a short yardage 5 on 5 (or 4 on 4) indoors in the winter with regular goalies. I used to go to as many Thunder/Power games as I could when the B-more/DC NLL franchises were around, so I'm hoping for the posibility of increased NBC coverage since it's not worth it to make the drive to Philly to try and catch the Wings.

I wish I could play box, but there isn't any near me. It seems like it could help a lot with anyones field game. Unfortunately, with the dominance of baseball in my area, we're lucky to have field as it is, let alone another league.

That finances and baseball dominance, and my son is a dominant pitcher, is why we don't have more and better lax in GA. I think he would stick with baseball even is lax was popular around here. He's 6 ft 4 in and just 15 and still growing (size 16 shoe :chuckle: ) But many rec directors say lacrosse would rob their baseball talent pool because they know the better athletes would try lax.

One thing I can't imagine is playing summertime box in the southern US.

We get hot enough in summer, and non air-conditioned arenas are disgusting sweatboxes

actually we are playing field, outside right now, but virtually everything down here is air conditioned.
i know that the arenas where people play are used for indoor soccer and other stuff during the summer. they probably arent cold in there, but they arent going to be ovens either

I am not a fan of it because it too closely resembles hockey, a game I despise. If there were more sportsmanship, actual goalie skills, and less of a hockey feel, I would like it.

Thats what most people's initial response is. However, it is actually MUCH more like basketball, believe it or not. You can take almost any basketball play and apply it to box lacrosse with maybe a few modifications. Here's some of the similarities to bball:
1) offence / defence
2) transition and momentum game
3) shot clock
4) set up house defence
5) set pick and rolls
6) penetrate defence for a shot
7) over-and-back / backover rule

and what do you mean actual goalie skills? I play goal and some days its damn hard! The other game they scored 9 goals on me and it pissed me off. I've had games where I've faced 50 shots. There's snipers too cuz the nets are smaller. there is alot of skill and athleticism playin box goalie. I often wish players and outsiders could understand what its like being a box goalie. It can be quite a challenge physically and mentally. I'd say the hardest thing to do is stay cool when a team of good shooters are peppering you and scoring lots of goals and you still gotta stay focused and continue to make good saves.

I think box is definatly more marketable. Dont think of it from the perspective of which you or your friends or I like more. This is why I think NLL is more marketable:
1) Much easier to fill an arena than an outdoor football/soccer stadium
2) There are big ticket arenas everywhere in big cities e.g Air Canada Centre, Staples Center, Madison Square Gardens.
3) The playing field is much smaller therefore easier to follow and much more action
4) MORE GOALS = happy and excited fans
5) Big hits and fighting really get the crowd into the game
6) Balls often go into the crowd and become souveniers for kids like baseball
7) No rain delays
8) Music during play or face-offs

Ohh my goodness, 50 shots with only 9 goals? That's a killer to your save percentage. :nut: 9 goals is nothing king sir.

I tried a box lacrosse league down in Trumbull, CT. I have to say that full field lacrosse is alot more fun. IMO. But Box helps your quickstick/crease play alot, because it is smaller and you need to have a quick and effective release.

If you can, try playing in a box league. they can benefit you in many ways.

I play goal in both versions, and I can say that I get more shots in box than I do in field.

How often do field goalies have to face up to 60 shots on goal in a game? I would say that that occurrence would happen more often in box than it would in field.

I also feel that a box goalie is a lot safer than a field goalie due to the equipment they wear. However, a field goalie has to be more mobile in and out of the crease. Even though the stick skills in both are transferable, most goalies that play both would most likely use different sticks (box - wood, field - plastic).

I haven't played box before, the closest I've come to it is playing indoor on half of a basketball court 4 vs. 4. It was okay. It was more fast-paced and there was alot more hitting. I appreciated the speed and agility it took to play, but I really didn't like the lack of space. I like field alot better because you have more room to move, it's easier to control the flow (speed) of the game when you have the ball, and, in my experience, it's less focused on hitting than it is on finesse.

:read:
I didn't say harder, I said try it before you decide it's easy. Even with all that padding and very little net, you simply have no idea how stupid you can be made to look by a sick-sticked attacker.

What does "harder" even mean in this context? They're completely different positions. Sure you'll stop more shots in box, so your save percentage is higher, so it's arguably easier to make one given save.

However, like Stonewall says - how many times do you have to face 60, or even on rare occasions, 80 shots per game in field. NEVER!!! (Hell, how many times do YOU even see 30 shots ON GOAL in a game anyway?)

Bottom line - Both types of goaltending have their challenges, and winning games as a goalie is JUST AS HARD IN BOTH TYPES OF LACROSSE.

Think about it - 30 shots per game at a 55% save percentage is just about equivalent to 60 shots per game at a 75% save percentage.

One more thing before you decide box goal is easy:

Just for fun - try just standing up while wearing box goal equipment for a 60 minute game in a 110 degree arena in the middle of a July heat wave!

Did you fall(collapse) into the bench at one point?
If so I reffed that game, and your right That was probly the hottest it's been this year.

My son is a Bantam goalie (box) & it usually takes 24-48 hours for his equipment to dry after a game. He gets sweaty just walking from the dressing room to the floor before a game.

I've always played field and, since i play long pole, field's really the only one for me. However, after watching box videos and reading up on it, I can't wait till next winter to look for leagues and hopefully catch some NLL games. I believe there is a Top Gun indoor league in the Mass. area around Boston, a buddy of mine at Milton Academy played club/indoor for a fall/winter season a few years back. But box just looks like so much fun, the faster paced, harder-hitting action must be addicting. Plus I would love to play some offense for once and get some goals. Although the area of play is vastly different between the two: field is a much larger open field while box/indoor is a boarded unforgiven arena. But box looks so sweet.

I play indoor just in my field goalie equiptiment. 4by4 goals. I thought it really helped hone my skills, because as was said before you take tons of shots in indoor since the fields are so small.
