with braces do you also need a special mouthpiece?

I geuss orthodontists recomend a special double mouth peice (covers both top and bottom), but any regular one worked fine when I had them.

I'm getting mine off in 3 days. The first week was the worst, it has been the worst pain I've ever felt... I feel so bad for you. I just ate ramen, applesauce, and you can drink whatever you want. Just bare with it; It seems like I've had them on for forever, but once you get through it, it's supposed to be great. My orthodontist actualy gave me a special mouthguard "developed by an orthodontist for contact sports" and it worked fine. It's really big and you can't talk with it in, but it works and you don't have to mold it.

I ate pretty much jello, spagetti, and yougurt for the first week and a half. After that getting them tightened is the only thing that hurts but that isnt anywhere near as bad.

I had braces from 7th to 9th grade, no rubber bands. Really the only thing that sucks is when you get them tightened. After the first week, you are on easy street...for the next 2 years. Seriously they aren't as bad as advertised.

Mozzerella sticks are probablt the best tasting thing you can eat when you get them, that's basically all I ate; it was so depressing.

i ate so many things. Right after you get them on its just a little soreness so have a last big meal. Then buy soup, any kind is great, pasta, milkshakes, ice cream, any drink, candy you can suck on. Theres really not that much you cant have without a little buit of tylenol and some pain tollerence.

i ate like oodle noodles, jello, milkshakes, n then it gets better, im sure they feel really weird, but idk, either take some tylenol, or grab a cold bruski n drink that, n hopefully ur teeth arent really messed up bc once they go straight, the tightenings dont hurt and u dont even realize u have them

Depending on the state that your teeth are in prior to when you get your braces, is how painful it will be (also how tight he/she is trying to pull them). So when some people say "it doesnt hurt at all" probably had it much easier than you.
Most of the time the pain goes away after about a week, allthough mine didn't get any more comfortable for a month. That was complete hell. I ate alot of mashed potatoes, because they are freaking amazing...
Re: Mouthpieces, The ones molded to your teeth will be difficult to take out, because they will pull HARD on your brackets/wire and can break them. I used a molded one 50% of the time i wore my braces, and the other i used the doctor issued ones. You can't talk at all with the doubles, and they feel really stupid, also are VERY hard to get on through a lax cage.
But now every time I go to the dentist they always comment about how good my teeth are, which is awesome. Oh yea, definately buy one of the bleaching kits when you're done with them, because it works wonders, and chicks dig good teeth...obviously...lol
Just take some pain killers and you'll be great

I find it easiest to just take pain meds when it hurts unbearably, and eat anything u want. Usually your front teeth will hurt more than those in the back, so just tear off pieces of food and shove them in the back of your mouth. I just got my braces "adjusted" and it hurts way more than any time I got a new wire. Oh well, I'll get through it and then have some nice pearly whites. :naughty:

I just got mine on and after a while does it get easier to eat without getting stuff between the wire and your teeth cause ive had to rinse with water after every time ive eaten ...
i have had pudding, ramen, soft tacos from mmm Taco Bell, and a Wendys mmm frosty ... but i cant help the getting stuff between them part and i use a lot of wax ....
also and last thing you guys all you guys who ate sugar and stuff did you just brush regularly ? I thought the sugar thing had something to do with the braces themselves ...

Try some green bean casserole.
I had a Hertz appliance, pallet expander, and bottom expander on, then I god braces on the top all at the same time. The Hertz was akward feeling, not too painful, but brace hurt.
Just try to muscle through it, the longer you stray away from eating normal food the longer it will take to adjust, and it will hurt longer.
Try some pizza, probably the best soft food with alot of carbs and such, and pasta. Or some soft chicken.
And when you have braces tightened it feels tight like when you first got them on, but not like you have a bulldozer in your mouth, you get used to them.
After that you'll just get some callouses from some wires or brackets every now and then but just use wax.
As for foods, I always ate hard candy and chewed gum, it never broke anything. Bit into a hotdog once and my wire snapped out. . . I was like "wtf m8^?

Oh the joys of an pallet expander... I still remember my parents standing over me as I lay with my head tilted back as they attempted to figure out how to get the little plastic crank into the tiny little whole... :whyme:
Anyway. Braces will seem horrid for the first week, but it gets better. It'll hurt after they're tightened most of the time, but you'll get used to it. If the pain gets too bad, just pop the Advil and chomp on something soft. Good luck with it!
Edit: Avoid stuff you need to bite into... Stick with the stuff you can manage with a knife & fork, or with a spoon. None of that barbaric bread ripping with front teeth stuff. :nahya:

Mine hurt a lot the first day, but I ate steak and pizza anyway, because I'm just cool like that. It wasn't horrible excruciating pain or anything, just more of an annoyance everytime I took a bite.

Well, got my braces back on. And what a joy it has [not] been! First week, i only ate stuff i could cut up and eat with my back teeth. Second week, little sore, but still no biting into food. Third week, back to eating normally, for the most part.
Spaghettio's are man's greatest food invention when you have a sore mouth. :D

Depending on how bad your wisdom teeth are developed, you may be able to eat steak even a couple hours after getting the procedure. When I got mine I didn't get knocked out, but just got some novacaine in my mouth. I was up and running cross country later that night. The only real bad thing that I experienced was the constant aching pain, and the bleeding.
