So I was at lacrosse camp at St. Leos and some skilled defenders were "butt checking" as its called. I've never seen anyone butt check in a season game but I asked one of the coaches about it and I guess it's an extremely important check in say the world cup and possibly collegiate level(?). They also explained how it was effective on picking up ground balls, but it cant be more effective than a head check right? So..what is it useful for? anything? And do you guys consistantly butt check?
--searched a couldnt find a thread on this..so maybe its a first?

No, she's asking about checking the bottom "butt" end of the stick. I've never heard it called a "butt check" before nor do I suggest using that terminology in the future.
It's not "extremely" important at higher levels of play, its just that that is the only level you usually see it due to the skill level of the players. I've taught it to a few of my players in high school, but they just don't have the control yet to effectively, and legally execute it. If used properly, and at the right time, it is extremely effective. Girls who don't cut their sticks down or those that sometimes don't hold the bottom of their shaft all the way at the end like they should be doing, are very susceptible to this kind of check.
Now, if you're refering to sort of hip checking a girl using your rear end, that's very illegal and it can be dangerous as well. So umm....don't do it.

Agree CTLaxer. In many, many years of coaching I have seen a handful of players that can utilize this check. Remember; if you're not in control, you wind up slapping on the players body....in my opinion too risky. Maintain body position, keep your stick in the passing lanes(i.e. UP), and be patient.
If you crack someone in the knuckles while slapping at the butt and you don't get red carder out of the game, you have very poor officials. Flashy checks are for desperate players.

I played a Skywalkers team once who had perfected this check and it was extremely irritatingly effective.

no, not a check with the buttend, a check on the buttend of the opponent.

I use it. Usually when I get beat. I can easily turn and get the butt end of the stick because it is often unprotected since they think they've beaten me. Suckers.
But yeah, it isn't used too often.

yeah i use it also. but usually get called because when i check it they dont expect it and its dramatic. i just feel like the dumbasses that don't put their bottom hand all the way at the bottom deserve to be punished.its a great check. end of question

It's never been used in games I've played, but I've seen it at the high school and college level. If done correctly, it can be very affective...

Sometimes when you go for that check, you loose a valuable defensive position. If you miss, which is pretty likely, you've got to regain your balance and then catch up. My coach generally discourages these kinds of checks, because the higher level you get the more likely the person with the ball will pull, or have better hand position. Nothing takes the place of good defensive position, but the butt check does look awsome when done right.
