just in the last week ive noticed that when im shooting the ball goes higher than expected..and my coach told me that when i was shooting i was doing more of a vertical shot (like how you are supposed to pass) and he told me to not shoot like that anymore and instead to shoot at a 3/4 angle (inbetween sidearm and vertical) is this the right form or is the shot messed up due to not enough whip in the stick?

I think your coach is mentally retarded.. it's quite alright to shoot/pass directly overhand.. it's technically sound.. I think you just have to hit the wall an sort out your shooting problems. .just get used to your stick

Uh, nothing wrong with going 3/4. A lot of people prefer to go that way. Of course you don't have to shoot at any set angle, but 3/4 and overhand are usually most effective, especially at lower levels. So just hit the wall and focus on making the ball go lower...learn to adapt to any stick.

also you might want to adjust the stick
you always want to adjust the stick and not have the stick adjust your throwing style.

I agree with WHEELAX, shooting straight over hand is what most coaches want you to do.

theres nothign wrong with shooting overhand....do w/e feel comfortable. just practise and get used to how the stick throws/shoots and ull get a decent shoot in no time. just practise shooting.

one of two things could help you
1) pull with your bottom hand more on the shot (pulling makes it go down, pushing with the top hand makes it go up)

2) add a little more whip to slow the release time to when your stick is straight

Wow, I've never heard of a coach that actually encourages anything other than completely overhand shots. I have a very accurate sidearm shot (I can even pick corners), yet my coach still hates when i do it (and if I miss, its COMPLETELY because I'm a sidearm shooter).

Shoot what's comfortable. If your shot's going too high, then it's probably your release point. Try to snap your wrists a little later in your windup.

i make my players practice different shots, the ones that can consistetly make the other kinds are allowed to use them in games, the others arent.

the key is practice, i had one of my players score 2 BTB goals in one game, besides having a TON of talent, he practices his a$$ off.

the bottom line for me is that if you have the skills to make a particular shot, i'm not going to tell you you cant. if you dont have the skills to do it, and try it in a game situation, well you will find your butt on the bench for a while

yeah my passing skills with the stick is perfectly fine...i can hit a brick on a wall from a distance out..and pretty fast too...its just when i wind up to take a shot and do it overhand it goes a lot higher...maybe im bringing the stick back too far..?

I disagree. I feel a complete lacrosse player should be able to throw with any stick, regardless of how tight/how many the shooters are, or where the pocket is. Personally, I can without a problem.

As I understand it, the bottom hand should have little or nothing to do with the force applied to a pass or shot. It's the top hand that should be doing almost, if not all of the work.

extend your arms more maybe? i coached a kid who had the same problem. i had him extend his arms more when he shot and it worked. i cant see you shooting right now so i dont know what to tell ya.

I'd wager that your shot is sailing a bit because you're lowering your head - or at least your eyes - when you haul off a shot. Your coach may be suggesting that you use a more lateral motion to help you compensate for this.

Work on keeping your eye focussed on the spot on the wall or the corner of the cage that you're aiming at. This may cost you some velocity for a while, but shots that sail over the cage are certain not to score, and well aimed shots with less snap often go in.

my friend does this all the time. its like he puts his head down when he shoots and the ball flys over the net. 3rd is right.

try this- since ur shooting a little high then aim a little lower than where u are intending to shoot. It might help
