View Full Version : How to keep your strings from fraying *TIP*

All right guys, I searched for the record, but didn't see anything relevant. I always had problems with my strings unraveling and such after I strung them, so I was messing around one day with my lighter. I realize that if you first burn the string before you cut it, it works a lot easier.

1. Get a string.
2. Pick the spot where you are gonna cut the string.
3. Take your lighter and burn the spot that you're about to cut, for about 3-5 seconds.

4. Pull both ends of the string tightly.
5. Cut the string where you burned it.

Not only does this keep the ends together, but it also makes the string really small at the ends, to help with all those real small holes.

Hope this helps! It works for me.

Sorry if someone already said this, but I never saw it. :whyme:

EDIT* I dont have a camera, so I cant show you with detailed pictures. :imparied:

that sounds like a good idea, i'l have to try that tomorrow, i was thinking about things like this on how to make good cuts and eventually tried heating up my scissors then cutting, it didn't turn out very well tho, all the stickiness from all those freeze pops (can't remember the name for some reason) jsut melted and got gross, but il def try this out tomorrow, sounds like a good idea

I have done that before, but never saw a beneficial thing to it. I just was too lazy to find scissors and cut the string so I burned off the extra.

Ive done it, worked great on my goalie stick. Ive also learned that if u have a problem with nots u can burn the knot so that it is permanent, make sure that u have the knots to were u want them.

I do that sometimes, but normally I'll cut the nylon, then burn the strings in the blue part of the flame so it isn't burnt like and is just hard melted plastic. Or, if I am going to be using it to string (not knotting it, doing some stitching or whatever), I'll use the normal orange part of the flame, let it geta little bubbley, then lick my thumb and index finger real well so I can pinch the bubbley part and stretch it out. Basically makes a hard plastic thing that makes going through holes 50 times easier.

I do this but I also use a pair of toenail clippers instead of scissors. They're cheap, and have a very neat cut. Also nice and small to keep in your stringing box or whatever!

yes i have done this, and sometimes burned my finger on those short strings. I found that if you have a pair of sharp scissor, the result can be just as good and if you are jsut cutting off extra string you dont need the string small anymore, so its works very well if you do this when getting string from your spool

lilaxgurl, you'd be surprised how much this actually does work it creates almost and already molded tip and the tips are very small yet already burnt with out having that hard plastic thing that can at times become a big ball, i'm not trying to be critical or anything just mentioning bc i mean i thought it wouldn't make that much of a difference, but now i can finally fit all my strings through those tiny holes at the top of sidewalls

yeah, burning knots is a good way to get them to hold. I ddi that for my RPs. good tip, I never thought of doing that. Go throw that in the "post your tips" sticky.

I do that as well somthimes it burns and some hot nylon gets stuck to my finger. If you are burning shooters, burn them and then dip teh ends in hot wax a from a candle......

how do you know if your shooting strings are the burnable ones. And do you have to take the plastic thingy off first and then burn it? (my plastic thing on my shooters is falling off)

if you use hockey laces as shooterers wont that catch on fire? I mean i dont want to do that

Yes hockley lace shooters burn but they melt so let it burn for a second

all shooters are burnable. at least as far as i know, they have wax inside them that makes them easy to burn/melt. yes, you definitely need to take the plastic thing off. i accident burned the wrong topwall and all it did was sizzle and turn into a big black abomination.

I dont even put my hockey laces in a flame...Just cut the ends so its semi-flat, then hold it about 1/2"-1" away from the flame ,and it'll melt without turning black.

the pull apart method sounds sweet, its kinda like streching glass for those who have done it.

Burning cant be beat but if you use a realy sharp knife it helps too
I also herd of using clear nail polish on the tipssif you dont have a lighter but ive never tried it

nice.. i have already tried that, it works but theres a flaw, and it is that the smell is 10x worse than doign it normally, but whatever floats your boat

I have never gotten a smell from the strings. If you burn it for like 10 seconds yeah I am sure there is a smell, but if you are smart and do it for like 3 it is fine.
