How do you think he'll do in his first year? A bust or not?

I think he is going to be a huge bust. plus his team not good at all. he's going to hate his first year, and he is not going to produce.

The pre-season game vs. the Raiders was a good preview. He's gonna blow. I said this as soon as he was drafted. I think if they do start Smith, he'll lose the starting job 4 games in to Rattay. I think it would be smarter to keep developing him and start Rattay, who did very well against the Raiders and is fighting hard to keep his starting job.

You're right, a 21-year old's first NFL game EVER, is the perfect barometer for how well his pro career will be. In Tom Brady's first game, he went 1 for 3 with 6 yards. And you're right, HE SUCKS.

I said this as soon as he was drafted. I think if they do start Smith, he'll lose the starting job 4 games in to Rattay.

I don't think they should start him, but I think they will. The Niners don't really have anything to lose this season, so barring Smith throwing 6 interceptions per game, and running backwards, I don't think they'll give Rattay the job.

I think it would be smarter to keep developing him and start Rattay, who did very well against the Raiders and is fighting hard to keep his starting job.

Again, Rattay played against the Raiders 2nd string defense (I think, I didn't watch the game). And I totally agree, I think it would be wise for the Niners to use the Carson Palmer method, and let him sit on the bench and learn the NFL lifestyle.

Truthfully, I think that will be his biggest problem. Smith is coming from Utah, to a major city. How will he deal with all of the temptations around him, especially with all that money?

ya but it's not like he came from some little hick town in the mountains somewhere. he grew up in san diego, which isnt exactly a small city. i hope he does well because he's a hometown boy and i used to watch him play little league when he was on my brothers team

Growing up in San Diego, and being a star in San Fran are two different things. Plus, San Diego and San Fran are in completley different areas.

I live near Boston, but if I the Jets number 1 pick next year, growing up in a city as a no one isn't going to help much. Get what I mean?

what i meant was you made it sound like he grew up in some small town in utah, so i was just saying that he's lived in a big city. and he wasn't exactly a no one in san diego, he was the best QB in SD so he was constantly getting attention with the local media, and playing on the same team as reggie bush helped too.

I've watched him play several times, and my neighbor used to play with him, he was the tight end for the U of U. So I think he's great, yeah, but he was playing against a super easy schedule and while he's awesome, I think he'll get killed in the NFL against teams that are MUCH tougher than anybody he's ever played in college, even the Fiesta Bowl. He's going to get screwed right off, my bet.

He will be nothing special. I can't see why he was drafted first overall...If I had the first pick i would have traded down. I think the best value in the draft was Antrel Rolle and Derrick Johnson

Alex Smith is a great guy but isn't going to do much in the NFL.

I don't understand the whole "he'll have temptations around him" arguement. All teams in the NFL are pretty much in major cities...

I would've taken Braylon Edwards, and then Charlie Frye in the 2nd round if I were them.

you guys wanna know why he went number one. because the niners had the 1st pick and they needed a QB, and since matt leinhart (sp?) didn't enter the draft alex smith was the next best thing

I would have taken Aaron Rodgers over Alex Smith. The Packers got a REAL good deal with Rodgers at the 24th spot.

i saw aaron rodgers play in the holiday bowl and he got owned by texas tech, he didn't impress me at all, wait he's the guy from cal right

There's a reason he slid to 24... But, why do you think they should've taken him? I think he was just a product of the system; that's why nobody drafts Texas Tech QB's early.

Aaron Rogers is not from Texas Tech. He slipped to 24 because nobody after San Fran wanted a QB.

Obviously Smith is gonna suck in his first season, but I think he'll become a decent QB eventually.

only way he's gonna get better is to throw him in there and let him play. I don't know if he will suck as much as the team around him sucks.....

As college QB's go Alex Smith wasn't even that good. Add to that the fact that he played in a shotgun formation the WHOLE time he started at Utah and you're taking a huge gamble you can't really afford to take. Aaron Rodgers might not have looked as "spectacular" or whatever, but atleast he is used to playing in regular formations. That can be a very difficult obstacle to overcome. What they really should've done is drafted one of these RB's with the first draft pick, and then been the worst team in the NFL again. Then they could have gotten Matt Leinart.

I know that, what I was saying is that he was a product of Cal's system, just like Texas Tech QB's are.
