concentrate on the fundementals, as a defenseman your job is not to take the ball away, its to prevent you man from getting off a good pass or a good shot.

spend too much time tying to take the ball away and you will force 1) your teamates to make up for your getting beat and 2) you will end up riding pine.

leastways that's what i do to the D-men on my team that think they can throw takeaway junk.

how many times do you think an all american defender takes the ball away in one game?

I mean makes his man drop the ball then he himself picks the ball up..

how many times?

no more than two times.

great defense isn't about taking the ball away.. that's just a bonus )... great defense starts with your feet and how you position yourself relative to the ball and the goal.. focus more on footwork and good positioning and you will find yourself to be a much much better defender than if you were to try and take the ball away all the time..

our defense is pretty well expireneced on my team. only because no one else really cares. ( aka middies ) we don't necisarily (sp) use take-away check's to often. but they do come in handy every once and a while. the over head check is a tricky one. you can really pull it off once in a game. once you throw it. everyone's gonna see, and learn not to do what the attackmen or w/e just did to recive that check. the one handed wrap is fairly simple. i use it in a pattern including slaps and conatckt pushing ( straight up or v-holds ). all you do is move your hands down, one on the bottom and one about a foot ( for me, might be a lil more or a lil less for most ppl ) above the bottom. if the bottom hand is the left. you throw the butt-end under your right arm. making the head go left. opposite of if your bottom hand is your right.

what you're trying to do is not necessarily take away the ball with all this fancy shmancy over the head junk, what you need to focus on is slowing the guy with the ball down, and preventing him from getting any passes or shots off. for example, slowing a guy down could be the difference from a textbook fastbreak and a turnover.

first off this & one of his other ones needs to be deleted, dude i dont care but in the future make one thread alright?
secondly as i said in the other one be sure you have fundamentals down, then go read my ohter post.lol...takeaway checks are great though over the head ones can like someone said only be used once unless the opposing team really sucks, but they are great none the less as long as you know when to use them & how to do them, right now just from what ive seen about you so far i would encourage you not to use them.lol...no offense, just saying be sure you know what your oding other wise your coach, teammates & especially goalie will have your *** at practice

ive said it before and i'll say it again, you will use the checks that your coach allows you to use and you will use them where he allows you to use them. otherwise you will be riding pine and last i checked, that's not the point of *playing* lacrosse

ask your coach

pineboy, you missed my point, i allow certain players to throw certain checks in certain places, if they dont follow my instructions, they are riding pine.

nothing pisses of coaches faster than getting beat because you are playing like a knucklehead.

spenny's #1 rule of lax: dont piss off the guy who decides playing time.
