i have all the dodges - i have the shot i have the speed...
i dont have the defense
i dont get beat too often but i do occasionally..
i know that good D means good positioning ... footwork ... and strength... but somehow thats not doing it all

a lot of what helps me (and it also applies to people like me- that is, fairly big/strong and fast) is that i play body defense almost all the time. any time you go for a stick check, you open yourself up to be beaten. if you play body defense and push them out with your stick, which keeps them as far out as possible, then the chances of them getting a successful shot is greatly decreased. true, it may not be as glamorous (sp?) as the wicked wrap check or any other check which strips the ball, but the middie's job isnt always to take the ball away, but to keep the offensive middies from shooting/feeding successfully. leave the stripping to the d-men.

i do agree with that most of the time i go for the "bait" and i get burnned... middies are taught to show the other middies the "bait" and when they go for it... your gone and before you know it .. its a goal
my coach taught me just to keep the middie's a sticks length apart and if they get closer to shove them back out... i think shuffling ( like in basketball ) is good too because it keeps you in front... so i guess in a sence its like tim duncan playin defence on shaq... the only difference is that both players are farther out and the defencive middie isnt allowed to "hand check"
so thats where foot work is important...dont go for the stick check unless the middie is a retard basically.. but if u go for it and miss you have to keep in miind that you cant let him beat you... so just the main rule is dont commit too much to going for the ball
play the body
any1 agree?

superior position and superior footwork. shall i say it again? superior position and superior footwork. for anyone playing defense, from the 5'3" 80lb guys to the 6'4" 240 pound guys, if you understand where you are in relation to the goal and what options your man has, you'll win. if you know that the guy is a righty- then give him the left hand only, which means placing your body like this:
_ offense
\ defense
\/ goal
to give the lefty. if you at least graze him with a push, it will force him to a wider path, and that leaves him open to a double or a slide as well as decreases his angle on the goal for a shot. you dont have to put his face in the dirt, just hit him enough to move him to where you want him. the same applies to a lefty- force him right:
_ offense
/ defense
\/ goal
if you keep up the pressure and tie up his hands when hes shooting or passing, it wont matter who you are, you'll be playing great defense.

another key is to not let the middie cut towards the inside ( towards the goal ) even if the middie is strong righting and hes on the left side u gotta push him out right away from the middie of the field RIGHT?
laxfreghtrain

well, not necessarily. it depends on the type of defense you run. if your team plays zone defense, then thats correct, you typically dont want him cutting down the middle. however, if your team plays man-to-man AND has a good slide scheme, then pushing him center for a quick slide isn't always bad. what i mean is: if your team does a rotating slide defense, where one man slides, and the adjacent man moves to the now open man, and so on down the line, then pushing your man center is a good way to set up a crushing blow to get the ball. the whole defense has to be on the same page though, because if they arent, and some misses a slide, then the offensive middie will just dump it to the open man, and ten times out of ten they will score on an easy inside shot.
yellow= defense
blue=offense
(disclaimer: i suck at drawing pics. with my computer)

well, i went to lax.com and saved one of their pictures they used, then i photoshopped it. that is, i covered up what i didnt want and then drew/typed in what i did want. once i got the hang of it, it was pretty easy and fast. i can make more if you guys want some more ideas for plays and all

the simplest plays always works best
try to do somehting wear every one is cutting and picking and it is just mass chaos, which still might be good cause the goalie has no clue what is going on
the cheapest play i have ever seen was a crazy one. all 6 attacking playes went up to the half field line and got in a group then a straight line. Then all of the just ran straight for the goal. We had no clue which dude had the ball. needless to say they scored
laxfreghtrain
02-11-2004, 12:50 PM
yeah. most of my plays usually have a pick and only one or two men max cutting. what also works a lot of the time is a simple draw and dump as well.

no problem. i'll draw out some D & D plays. most people dont realize all the little variations you can throw into a D & D play. and as for more, i'll get some more plays up too. i found my playbook and i'll use some of them and i'll even modify them too. i'll get them up tomorrow.

in all of ur plays its aginst man to man
laxfreghtrain
02-12-2004, 07:26 PM
yeah, zone defenses are a tad harder to run plays against, since it isn't as easy to fool the defense. i suspect that these plays would all work against zone however. also, it just plain easier to do these drawings with man-to-man. anyway, here are a couple of D & D plays. it may look confusing, but each color represent a different way to run it. i repeat, these drawings have multiple plays in them. i'll post these now, but i cant do more since i have some homework due tomorrow that i have to get to. i may do more later.

guys you haveto take into consideration that the defense would most likely not go behind the net to defend there man...most good players on defense will play the posts and follow the attackman laterally not chase after him...
laxfreghtrain
02-13-2004, 12:18 PM
not so. in many instances if the man is carrying the ball far enough behind the goal near the endline, a defensive-man will go behind the goal, if he feels he has good support from his fellow d-men. in the instances that the man beind the goal does not have the ball, simply stretching the field by having the man at X move farther away from the d-man will be enough to get the d-man to follow the attackman, or at the very least to get him to move from the posts.
