Alot of people i tlak to about music cant belive i like both and listen to both all the time. I think if alot of people would open up there minds a bit, some would like both, they both got there strong points.

Exactly, I like rock for its music and rap for its lyrics.
I agree, though, there are too many ignorant, judgemental people out there.

linkin park doesn't really rap, they attempt to rap, but it doesn't really sound like rap. but they're my favorite band, but as far as music choice goes... country is my favorite. that reminds me of what happened last night,. i was working out in the free weights room at the gym, and they just installed this sound system, so of course... rap is always on to get you pumped up. well i walked in, and there were like 15 guys in there, and so it was really crowded, so i just went into the back room, and changed it to a country station! and after oh... 5 minutes, the whole room was cleared out except for me and the guy that offered to spot me. funny how no one likes rap.

I tend to listen to more rock though. But everyonce and a while I'll buy a rap CD.
I'll listen to anything pretty much though.
I don't like teen hard rock like Trapt and Hoobastank and Three Days Grace stuff like that. Shins, Boston, ACDC, Postal Service, DCFC, Eagles, Coldplay, Incubus, Bob Marley, 50 Cent, DMB, Eminem, Jay-Z, Franz Ferdinand, Green Day, Guns & Roses, JET, Killers, Lil Scrappy, Los Lonely Boys, Maroon 5, Modest Mouse, Mos Def, NERD, Nirvana, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Queen, RHCP, TI, Stroke 9, Tenacious D, Third Eye Blind, U2, Van Morrison, Velvet Revolver

all that stuff is on my iPod--- very diverse if I say so myself.

Rock, whether it is classic or hard. Usually I only name bands I tend to listen on a normal basis, but I do actually like so of the older stuff as well, I just dont listen to it while driving. However, I do have some, not a lot but some on itunes. I am more into the hard music, like where they scream into the mic and jump around.

Motley Crue was much better, than again, i dislike almost all those Hair metal bands of the late '70s to early and mid '90s Only AC/DC was any good, and The Darkness (but they are '04).

Its a way of accomplishing a short term phsycological goal, and everyone has different goals.

You cant say that Snoop and Dre are mediocre. The two together have done so much for the genre as a whole, and have laid down some darn good tracks along the way. NWA, if you get past the gangster image, really put a whole new face on rap. Or at least "new" in the popular MTV sense of the term. Sure it may have been all cash money hoes, but it was also about rising up from the ghetto. Theres some brilliance in their songs. And Snoop smoked mad weed.

Idk, they are the predecessors to the whole mainstream of hip-hop, but then again they can't be blamed directly for these "Phony rappers, who do not write, Phony Rappers, who do not excite.... Bla bla bla thats what he said."

I like the "alternative" hip-hop more than mainstream. I won't deny the significence of Dr. Dre or N.W.A. in terms of bringing the more laid back west coast rhyming style but as individuals, they are not that great. There are much better producers out there right now, but then again, we have much more technology and new techinques than back in the day. In fact we have exclusively software producers (9th Wonder and FREAKING FRUITY LOOPS! FRUITY LOOPS! it gives me hope. :P)

More underground stuff would be stuff like Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis

Superunderground stuff would be guys on soundclick.com like Tempest, Vs Styles, Tha Kid, Treazy, and World Fame, that only have mixtapes comming out in certain regions.

Sometimes man its just the lyrics and how they flow. I mean its hard enough to say something clever in a song, but to do it to a beat and rhyming, and then on top of that convey a consistent message. Some rappers just have such a flow, each word fits the next one, the beat in the background, and you just get absorbed in the lyrics. The really good songs just take you into a different world, you get lost in the bass and the rhymes, you feel like you know exactly where this guys coming from cause it sounds like anything he says is just right. Its not how good of a guitarist he is, or if hes got a good drummer or him running around screaming or whatever. Its just one guy, putting what hes thinking out there, and hopefully he does it ellegantly.

ya, to elaborate on what makes a tight rapper, look at 2Pac or Biggie Smalls. listen to any of their songs. They suck.

good for their time? Yes. Good to people that dont listen to the lyrics? Yes. Good to people that listen to the words? Yes. But good to the people that listen for flow, the true defining factor of a good rapper, theyre the worst. They use hardley any multi's, and when they do theyre choppy as hell anyways. Every word is on beat, and most every line has the same number of syllables.

Now listen to any Jay-Z song. Jay is one of the greatest rappers in mainstream rap. Listen to how he flows. His lines are off beat, but he still manages to make it flow. His flow changes line by line, he uses plenty of multi's, hes inconsistent...on purpose. And it all comes together perfectly.

The you could look at any song by Grafh and you'd see hes one of the best alive.

I like some rap in small doses, but Rock is all that I listen to. I like Linkin Park alot, and they do rap a bit, so that's about as far as Rap goes for me.
I like all kinds of rock...folk, hard, classic.
Most of the rap today is just...stupid.

The hoes, the pimps, the booze and the drugs...That, mixed with some bad grammar and a pinch of actual music in the background...that's today's rap.

Not at allllll. Your telling me biggie has no style, no flow? Flow doesnt mean on or off beat. Like eminem, the man just makes words fit together that shouldnt, its crazy. Its just a different style though. Doesnt mean they dont have flow. Every word on beat is just as good. It gives biggie such a tightness with the music, the beat and his rhymes go like one. And the syllable thing just isnt true.

"My team supreme, stay clean (6 syllables)
Triple beam lyrical dream, I be that (10)
Cats you see at all events bent (7)
Gats in holsters girls on shoulders" (8)

How he rhymes around the beat doesnt mean he has a bad flow. Now i know hes not especially known for having the most amazing flow, but thats not a bad thing. Ever hear of the word stucatto?

If you like flow, then you have to check out Chali 2na of Jurassic 5:

Jurassic 5 - A Day at the Races
Yeahhh, your majesty, word flash photography
Third class economy, blade slashed your artery
Nerve gassed anatomy, blurred past dramatically
Herbs hashed, my word splash packed agility
Never predictability
Manouvers of mind fully designed cause I'm true to the rhyme
We do the sublime, crackin yo' backbone
Attackin you wack clones
Vernacular right and exact, capital rap zone
that come back verbal assault rifle (ahhhhh)
We fight like Stokely Carmichael
Nope! We just like you
We broke and ain't no tellin what we might do
Ain't no joke
Provoke the right to reverse to seek mercy
with the King Asiatic and Percy P
Ain't heard the worst of me, until your chest 3-D
Spit venom and burn your body like a STD

or Royce Da 5'9:

Royce Da 5'9 - Boom
I'm the verbal-spit Smith Wesson
I unload with sick spit the quick wick could split a split-second
Bomb with a lit wick expression
You here a tick tick then you testin..
My saliva and spit can split thread into fiber and bits

Metal, metalcore, hardcore (is ok.. depends who it is), alternative is ok, Im not too big a fan of commercial rock (Velvet Revolver, Foo Fighters, Seether) it still beats rap, Progressive rock and metal like Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Opeth is pretty awesome.

Trivium, Unearth, As I Lay Dying, Metallica, Killswitch Engage, Opeth, 311, Jimi Hendrix, Zeppelin, Coheed and Cambria, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Avenged Sevenfold are a few of my faves.

Mainstream hip-hop and rap is the plague that's been spread across America. Too bad people don't know what good music is. Now im not talking about underground rap and ****.. because one of my best friends will melt the face off of any mainstream rapper. His lyrics are well thought out and Genius to say the least. Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Pantera were the best things to come out of the 80's. None of that pansy Ballad rock like Bon jovi.. or other crappy rock like AC/DC. YEA I SAID IT! AC/DC sucks.

And I still think the 80's were terrible, regardless of Metallica, Slayer or Pantera. AC/DC does suck though.

Yup its just been confirmed you are a crappy poster.

Please, stop posting in the Open forum.

I would repost all my old arguements, but i'm done arguing with a bunch of 12 year olds who are to ignorant to appreciate any music aside what they see on MTV.

IF you would like some REAL music discussion check out: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/newquestions.php?board=2

Thats where a ton of Pitchfork Media reviewers, Allmusic.com reviewers, Rolling Stone, Spin, etc. are. The label A&R's regularly check out the forum as well.

So? Maybe some people don't take music so seriously and just casually listen. Does that make them a lesser person? No... but they can't really make a good argument in this thread if they don't know anything... so I see why you are frustrated.

I love rock n' roll, well yeah I do, but I also do like the bigger names in rap like some Jay-Z, B.I.G, P-diddy, 50 cent, Ludacris, and others, but I do love Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck (Yardbirds), the Who, and others, so I voted that I just like them both. I mean, some is good of each category and some is just bad, so I am just going to say I like them both, give it the benefit of the doubt.

Edit: Krypt0M4g!c, I am disgraced that you even could say that. If you took a few hours and watched the VH1 top 80 Hard Rock bands of all time, you would notice that Slayer was like #70, Megadeth was around #75, Pantera wasn't even listed, and I do like Metallica, which was around #30. Do you know what AC/DC got? #4. I agree 99% with that list that VH1 came up with on that countdown too.

What does VH1 know? And your going by a countdown? Omgzorz Greenday is #1 on TRL.. theyzz the best. And AC/DC does suck horribly. Their singer sounds like a dying chain smoker, their drummer is pathetic, and they wrote a song about balls. They are not hard rock at all.

Thank you enjoi

I would be pissed (OMG lol, can't spell crap without rap), but I blame it all on mtv. The stuff that is considered "rap" today is utter trash. That would be like me saying rock sucks because the only bands I know of are HIM, yellowcard, and maroon 5. Rock lovers would get mighty upset if I said that.

Same thing. Enjoi, you should post up that HUGE list of the definitive underground hip hop artists to listen to.

Check out edan, stones throw records (label), afu-ra, pete rock and c.l. smooth, de la soul, cannibal ox, mf doom, wu-tang, etc.

Ive changed my mind since i first voted in this poll long ago. I was a big fan of rock then, but i started to realize that the new rock that comes out right now is just abosultley terrible (with some exceptions). Rap isn't that bad. When you find a good rapper that you like and get their message it all of a sudden isn't that bad anymore. I like classic rock and rap now and thats pretty much all i listen to (with some exeptions).

Are you saying there is no beat or rhyming in Rock? I believe without a melody it's called poetry. Rap isn't really music it's urban poetry on a CD.

Limiting yourself to one genre is ridiculous. I think everyone can find something they like within every genre. I think its just a need to identify with a group of people who listen to the same music. I like what i consider good rap and i like what i consider good rock/alternative/ any other type of music.
Keep an open mind.

Actually, poetry can have a melody too. Read my post. Lets try to elevate ourselves from simply insulting each other's taste in music too. Try to have opinions instead of lowering yourself like that.

RUN-DMC, the best of both worlds, that duet with areosmith was off the hook, the video was way crazier. plus they rap over rock not hip hop beats.

You really know about what your talking about right?

Listen to "Leaving the Past" by Immortal Technique, and tell me
it doesn't have meaning

I'm sick of people judging rap based on what they see on MTV. Honestly, if you haven't exposed yourself to REAL hip-hop, and not hip-pop, then don't post like you know what your talking about.
I don't listen to much rock, so I don't generalize the entire genre by whats being played on the radio....because what I hear on the radio is trash

And for you guys that think rap takes no talent?
Making a quality beat, writing up lyrics, making the lyrics actually flow......that takes some serious talent.

So for everytime someone generalizes rap based on MTV, I get to generalize rock based on Maroon 5 :agree:

Yes, Rock doesn't objectify women. Not at all. Not ever. I am 100% sure no rock star has ever thought of using only a woman for her body.

Definetely not. Becuas they are all little angels.

Rap rawks. Rock raps. Yeah yeah. The rap rock stylings of ATDI's One Armed Scissor were cool. My posts are now in ADD format for easier reading for the ADD prone. DMB sucks, okay? My brother loves them and has like a gajillion gigs of their music, but I still have angst for stoney Dave and his band of dancing magicians. If you want a band that jams at their shows, go The Shins because the jams are like 2 minutes on like 2 songs and keep a really tight construction and are enjoyable. It's not ridiculous. Like DMB or Phish.

RJD2 is fun. Hip-hop is fun. Rap is foreign. Rock is lame these days. Stick to indie.

Thanks for this ignorant post!

Nevermind that theres a whole non-mainstream area of Hip-Hop (rap is what you do, Hip-Hop is the culture) that is intelligent, inventive, and is every bit as good as rock, actually more creative than rock (because of the use of sampling of all genres of music).

BUT HEY WHATEVER.
