Here's the deal.
I'm a freshman and I'm trying to get pulled up to the Varsity team this year. I'm bigger than all the freshmen that play lacrosse and some of the sophmores. I've been working harder than ever this summer trying to prepare myself for try outs so I can excel at the next level, but here's the question for you.
Locally, there is a group of guys that get together for practice/pick up games every wednesday night. These guys are all High school varsity players, college players and men in their 30s and 40s. I was wondering if it would be worth it for me to attempt to play with them. I'm totally aware that I would be getting my (insert censored profanity) handed to me unconditionally, but I've heard that the best way to improve is to play with guys much better than you.

If it makes any difference, my older brother who is 23 would be out there playing with me.

No to make you mad but it is pretty rare for a freshman to make varsity team in anysport.

Trufax.

Playing those pickup games every Wednesday will DEFINITELY help. Though, it may not help you get on Varsity, it'll help you to learn the game a bit more.

One of my good friends played Varsity lacrosse for his high school when he was in 8th grade.

well playing his senior year in high school(5 years) can get him in trouble (ringer) but yeah my friend made varsity soccer but it's still pretty rare, she just happens to b amazing. u can try playing in that v/alumni game and if u happen to like it then keep going to them but idk how much sudden improvement i'll see from, mayb over time but just keep practicing and good luck

Not really. Myself, and another made V lacrosse freshman year. 3 friends made V hoops freshman year. It's not that uncommon.

As for the topic, go for it. It's not so much about getting better, it's about creating a bond between you and the older, better players. If they know you, they are more likely to help you out and everything. Plus, you might get free rides out of it.

I would definately go, especaially since there's someone you already know going. Not only will you meet older guys on Varsity, but you will also get some new experience. Even if it doesn't pull you up to Varsity, no worries. You have 4 years to play HS ball, and maybe College lax later. Don't push yourself too hard; I have a friend that got pulled up when we were Freshman last year, and he suffered 2 concussions and can't play contact sports for awhile, if not ever again. So, take your time and enjoy lax.

Playing with people better than you are is a great way to improve your skills, but if you really want to turn the coaches heads you need to flat out hustle every minute at try-outs. As a coach if I see a freshman at try-outs showing more hustle than some of the juniors and seniors I really notice that. Not to say that they would make varsity, but I'll remember that for the rest of try outs.

He didn't say it never happens, he simply said it is not a common occurence.

i would agree with what laxmiddie32 said in a previous post, if you do go and enjoy yourself then continue to go, but if you're just getting pounded and not having any fun or not learning anything, then i'd say just keep practicing, just not with that group of players, but you mite as well go once, you'd probably learn a lot and end up having fun

one of the best ways to get better is to play against tougher competition.. if anything, you can at least watch better players to see what makes them better, ie cradling skills, field vision, discipline, etc....

even if you're struggling, don't let it get to you, and don't quit once you join..
