View Full Version : Do you wear a cup?
TRELAX

I know goalies have to, but do you guys wear cups (field players).
I'm not wearing one right now in box, but since I'm probably going to be taking faceoffs outdoors I may want to invest in one (its a bit more of a struggle on grass than on hardwood).
So do you? Also, FO men, do you wear cups, especially. State your position anyways.
Goalies need not respond, but you loveable fellows are always welcome.

I know a guy who was almost hit in his "area" and since then has worn a cup even to the running practices we have. I was smart enough to always wear a cup and havent had to worry about it!

Gotta wear a cup. Be ready for the d-man cup check at the beginning of a game, if your not wearing one, guess where his his first poke check will end-up.

Too many comments so I will just refrain, but in this order, jock strap, boxers, cup (just get it big enough). It is an honest question, until someone tells you.

i just put the cup over my boxers so i dont get chafed. that really sucks. i plan on getting compressed shorts sometime soon. id imagine they work pretty well.

Its not even an option. Wait until you get bagged badly by a ball or stick......it will happen, it always does, and usually its a Murphy's law thing....happening to the only guy on the team who's not wearing his cup!
If you don't like the heavy ice hockey/football style jocks, you can get lighter, skinnier ones meant for soccer. I wear one of these for light contact pickup laX and for ball hockey, and it is far more comfortable. It'll still protect a fair bit too (its designed for a hoof to the nuts after all!)

aj shannon was telling me how he never wore a cup, and he doesn't do it for indoor either. he said something like the chances of him getting hit are pretty low 'cause he plays on the offensive end. he told me a story when billy glading got hit in the junk once, but that wasn't enough for him to wear one.

A jock strap is the thing that holds the cup. You wear compresion shorts in place of boxers.

I've tried compressions shorts that ahve slips and they don't work well. THe cup ends up moving around a lot and is not a good experience. Just wear compressions shorts with a banana cup/jock and its managable.

the only problem with that is that only our three d-men and goalie wear a cup.
and about that billy glading thing not being enough, getting nailed in the baggage probably wouldnt be enough for me either. like i said, im stubborn and hard-headed

Wait until you try running when your jewels are swelled up to the size of oranges.
I've seen some brutal baggings even in fairly tame sports like softball. For anything more rough than these, I think only fools don't wear protection.
Best way - just get a snug strap and wear the cup directly over the junk. Then pull your compression shorts or tighty-whiteys right over the strap and cup. I've never had a problem with the cup moving or chafing.
(yes I said tighty-whiteys, this is the only time I ever wear them. They work).

I thought everyone was JOKING but this is absolutely pathetic.
Do they no have PE in school anymore? If so do you not have to wear one as a part of PE.
Laxmiddie and Laxbabe a jock is not what holds the cup, that is just the cup supporter. I suppose you could wear it against your skin but you will get terrible chaffing and it is really uncomfortable, plus you will not get any support.
This is ridiculous, how to do you kids play athletics and not get hurt. A jock strap, "athletic supporter" or "banana hammock" is without the cup. Do not try to use a soft cup either, they are crap and will not protect you. I still can't believe this needs to be explained like this. Buy a jock, I recommend Champion or Bike, They are the most comfortable and supportive. The Jock holds your junk in place. This way it doesn't move when you are exercising and running. The medical purpose is so you do not bounce so much you cause your testicals twist up around themselves. This can happen from excessive bouncing and jostling of your testicals. Painful injury, sometimes requires surgery to correct. Next the boxers or compression shorts can be worn, If you find you need more support in addition to the jock wear compression shorts. Some comp shorts have cups in them, but they suck, cuse you can't move as well in them and the cup digs into your groin. Purchase an cup with supporter and wear that over top of your boxers or Comp. to avoid chaffing. This allows for the movement of the cup with your body while still providing complete maximum protection.
I hope people are joking b/c what the hell are you learning in GYM class, health class, biology, and what are your coaches teaching you. They are responsible for your physical safety. These are not suggestions, it is like putting your pants on. There is one way to do this, the correct way and this is the only way.
Words can not express my level of sheer disbelief and astonishment. I am truly embarassed. You can not even dress yourselves to play lacrosse, so how do expect to play. I am finished. I really hope this is joke and people are not serious. Do not embarassed if you are serious, not your fault no one ever taught you. This is it I am done and I have had it.

Well, for one, no, no guy in any gym class at my school is required to wear a cup, and neither are any of the other students at schools around my area. Our P.E. teachers couldnt care less, and frankly, neither could the students.
Secondly, I have learned what I need to, both in biology and health class. Being a guy, iI have first hand experience being hit in the nuts. However, I dont care. Whether or not this is the correct way makes no difference. Like i said, only four, FOUR, people on my team wear a cup, the d-men and the goalie. No one else on my team wants to.
Thirdly, I am being dead serious about this. I dont wear a cup. so be it. I won't be embarrased or feel stupid about it either. If I get hit in the nuts, then maybe I will learn. I probably wont, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

TRELAX: heres a story that I think you need to listen to: one of my best friends who I play with on the varsity squad at my school nearly lost a nut because he wasn't wearing a cup... we were scrimmaging at practice when one of our midfeilders started to wind up for a nasty crank... my friend figured he would step out of the way since he wasnt wearing a cup... the midfielder figured that he didnt want to hit one of his own players so he decided to shoot around him... needless to say, when my friend stepped and the middie cranked... ball meet ball... at first we thought the loud pop we heard was his cup breaking, unfortunately for him it wasn't... after two surgeries, he says the one that got hit is still about 1/3 larger than the other one
(so yes, i recommend a cup)
btw- I'm a goalie
ooooooooooooouch. yeah, i wear a cup. boxers, cup with strap, compression shorts. holds it in nice and tight. i hope to get some under armour compression shorts though, they're just cooler. probably in yellow. and everyone needs one, i was goin for a groundball in the face off scrum and BAM! butt of a stick where everything counts.

UnderArmour compression shorts are the way to go and then jock/cup over them. Not the most comfortable but they do the job.
Last year we made the freshmen wear their jocks/cups over their boxers or comp shorts WITHOUT anything else for practice -- no mesh shorts, no sweats. It was freakin funny.

I can't stand them, I have never heard of these "Soccer" Cups but the football cups? I can't wear those when I play or I cause more injury with the chafing and I guarantee you I can outrun anyone in a big football style Cup. I prefer to keep my 40 time the way it is, But where do you find the "Soccer" Style cups because I would invest in one if I knew it wouldn't slow me down or bother me at all.

This thread still around?
my third or fourth take at giving my 2 cents:
Playing a contact sport without a cup is as dumb as driving drunk, riding a motorbike without a helmet, or juggling knives.
You're just begging for something bad to happen.
I stopped wearing a cup after high school. I play[ed] college, club and po-co ever since without one. I'm also a middie. I think a cup is more important if you play long pole or goalie.
Interestingly, before chest pads for goalies became mandatory in the late 80s, there used to be goalies who played w/o chest pads. Quint Kessenich was one of them. Even w/o offset heads, many players still cranked out shots in the high 90s.
Driving drunk is not the best analogy, because when you DUI/DWI, you are at risk to others as well as yourself. Driving w/o a seatbelt is a better comparison. Depending on state, many people ride motorcycles and bicycles w/o helmets.

why take the risk? They're not that uncomfortable, and I've seen kids who will never be able to have kids just because they didn't wear one. Sure you don't get hit there much, but what if that one time you do, it's a 90 mph shot or a hard stick check? I think that wearing one and being a little uncomfortable is better than not wearing one and having the possibility of being VERY uncomfortable

After i got hit on the tip of the shaft (SOO PAINFUL) i decided i would have to protect my junk. So i got some comp. shorts and theyre not bad...not uncomfortable enough to ***** about...and people laugh at me but i dug up my old little league cup from about 5 years ago and use that...its smaller so it gives me more mobility and its easy to push all the way down in the comp. shorts so it protects the tip and balls nicely...

Wow, the topic that won't die.
My sense is that most lax players DON'T wear the cup-style comp shorts. Instead they wear jock/cup over boxers or comp shorts, but not in them.
Wonder why is that?
In any case, wear a cup or you'll regret it.

I wear one because I play defense, but when I played attack, I didnt wear one. I did'nt use to wear one on D until a person on my team got pegged there with a good 75 MPH. He went down. Later on the sideline he said they were purple, and that it felt like someone took a lighter to it and held it there for like 5 minutes. OUCH!! And if you don't believe me here is our website:

Yes I wear a cup. I play defense and will never get on the field without a cup.
I wear the Bike brand Pro Flex hard cup. A cup is a must for all sports where you use a ball or a stick.
First I put on a jockstrap, a hard cup (don't even buy those soft cups), and then put on my compression shorts.
I feel more comfortable knowing I am protected just in case.

yeah i wear one, in my opinion its suicide not to wear one. i think all posistions should wear them. d and golie the reason is obvious, and ive hit my share of attack and midies there. once an attack was driving from x and the correct slide didnt come so i had to do something and was to far away to slide with body, so i meant to poke him in the chest and drive him away, instead he jumps up and i poke him right in the nads and it was a hard poke check, he fell right on his back. if he hadnt been wearing a cup he would prolly be sterilized right now. just one of many stories, some wich are very funny (as long as it isnt me getting hit )

Learning/Education is an interesting thing. A bright man learns from his mistakes. A brilliant man learns from the mistakes of others. The first time you get hit, you'll wonder why you never wore a cup. But some folks need to be hit the first time to learn this lesson.

i just saw this post, and theres already 7 pages so theres no doubt someones said this already, but if you don't wear a cup, you're stupid. you're endangering a very important part of your body and if you take a decent hit there, be it a shot, a pass, a stick check or anything else that could possibly impact your valuables, it WILL hurt and chances are it WILL cause damage. ive heard nasty stories about recessed testicles and whatnot, all because of no cups. dont do it, its too much to risk.

ITech compression jock shorts with a cup. The cup is in a little soft cotton pouch so there is no chafing. I wear it anytime I am near a flying lacrosse ball - especially in the box because the ball can have a mean up-bounce off concrete.
As a minor coach, I am responsible to ensure players are safely equiped. If I found out one of my players wasn't wearing a protective cup, even in practice, they don't play. Plain and simple.
If you are old enough to make dumb decisions, that is up to you. But if you get a mashed testicle (yup, just like mashed potatoes) , don't come crying to the bench, go straight to the dressing room.

why take the risk? They're not that uncomfortable, and I've seen kids who will never be able to have kids just because they didn't wear one. Sure you don't get hit there much, but what if that one time you do, it's a 90 mph shot or a hard stick check? I think that wearing one and being a little uncomfortable is better than not wearing one and having the possibility of being VERY uncomfortable
Exactly. :monkey:
If anybody is complaining that they are uncomfortable, suck it up. They aren't uncomfortable after a while. IT's just like wearing a helmet when you skate. Don't wear it and you can get ------.
To be honest, I sometimes feel naked if I'm not wearing a cup. Not when I'm playing, but when I'm like sitting in class or at home on the computer, I feel like I'm missing something... :WTF:

As a ~12 year old kid, I was bagged with a shot while playing ball hockey with one of those orange balls. I was playing defense, outside in the middle of winter and the ball was frozen solid.
The moral of this story is that if a 2 oz ball travelling ~50 mph hurts that much, no one should have to find out what a 5 oz ball travelling say 70 mph, or dare I say กกก90 mph!!! feels like.
WEAR YOUR CUPS, YOU MORONS!
Then again, if you've heard these testimonials and still choose not to wear a cup, well, keep going. Something ain't right in your head, and I'd be happier if you didn't reproduce anyway!

You can get hurt there even if its not by a lax ball. Just ask the star running back from Shen. He got kneed in the balls blocking during a pass play and couldn't play in the LaSalle playoff game. Probably one of the main reasons Shen lost.

YEOWCH!!!!! I wear a cup. I play goalie and my dad makes me...I know he's looking out for me. At last Saturdays game I took a DIRECT shot to the middle of my cup from about 10 feet away...POW! my dad said I sounded like a gunshot, you could hear it across the field the other teams goalie told me after the game. My dad said that EVERYBODY, both teams and the ALL the parents all let out a moan at one time. The ref came running over fast to see if I was allright, which I was. I felt the pressure of the ball hitting the cup but was just fine, I shook my head and continued play for the rest of the game which we won. The player came up to me after the game to ask if I was Ok and said he was sorry, I told him that it was OK, he was just playing lacrosse and I thanked him for his concern and felt he was a true sportsman and a good guy for asking.
I was sore for a day or so around the edge of the cup but my nads were "A OK"! If I hadn't been wearing a cup my nads would have been on both sides of the field. Lesson here....wear a cup if you play goalie and if you don't, get hit once, piss blood for a week or worse, and then if you're able...you'll wear one. Peace!

ya i wear them in games. usually i dont in practice. depending on what team i am playing with and how old the kids r i decide if i wear it in practice. but i always wear it in games. last yr this kid got hit with a shot in the side of his abs and he had this huge welch. it showed me the light to wat could happen if i got hit in the balls. have worn a cup ever since. anybody who complains about its uncomfortable i say its worth it and strongly suggest the shock doctor compression short with built in cup. i used to feel the same way but this is very comfortable and does not cause much disruption wen u r running. and think about the upsides of wearing a cup..... endless

I wear a cup and I'm thankful for it. I was playing in a game (I play D) and some kid winds up and shoots straight into my cup, at first I thought it wasn't too bad then I tried to move and it hurt so bad, and I had to stay in for the clear so I could switch out with someone. I can't even imagine what it would have been like without a cup.

i put some underarmour compression shorts over my boxers to keep everything in one place, then i have a "whitey-titey" style jock that only helps with the seperation, between all that i get no chaffing, all the protection, and i kinda enjoy it sometimes!

Not because its uncomfortable... but rather beacuse my team mate who was wearing one got hit and it cut the cord that holds your balls... and if he wasnt wearing one the shot wasn't hard enough to break a ball.

It is manditory for all teams in my area to wear a cup. Last year a kid lost a ball, so now we all must wear one. I forgot to the other day though, and i felt sooo unsafe w/o it on. And I almost got hit there with a hard check. Lets say, i didnt play the rest of the day. lol

I could imagine that being more uncomfortable than taking one in the pills. :concerned I've never liked wearing one, and alway second guessed why I did until last week I took a errant pass right in the package. I would have been going to the hospital if I wasn't wearing it.

I face off for my team, last season had over 75 winning %, i wear a cup sometimes when i am not too lazy to put one on. At then end its all up to you if you wanna wear one that particular day, but you should certainly have one. Its like playing rullet sometimes you win and sometimes you loose. I do most of the time, I do because it easier to concentrate, if you know what I mean, like when you're not wearing one I kinda worry about them, its kinda confusing but I'm sure someone knows what I mean. Also when I don't wear one, is when they get hit, like I got a defender's stick right into my boys, no cup.

For all the people who don't wear a cup YOUR DUMB. When you get hit in that area split your nuts in half and cry like a 3 year old girl, if I know you I am not going to say I told you so, I am just going to laugh until you realize how dumb you are for not wearing a cup. In the great game of lacrosse where people run around hiting each other with metal poles YOU HAVE TO WEAR A CUP PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

Yeah in indoor i don't feel like taking the time, but most of the time I'll put one on for field lax. Never actually been hit in a game, but the threat is always there. As an attackman, I have the dpoles to worry about, and they don't care where they hit you, and I've been a screen a few times on shots so....gotta watch out.
Only place I've been hit was at a practice on a stray pass. Doesn't have to hit hard, but puts you down.
