For years, COC officials were sent an NCAA rulebook every year. A friend of mine lobbied for us to get a choice between NFHS and NCAA rulebooks, which we did for a few years. However, I just got my renewal notice, and it says that COC officials get "one complimentary NCAA rulebook. Please disregard rulebook choice below."
Can I say that I'm annoyed? I can download the NCAA rulebook, but I have to pay for the NFHS one.
Your local state association dues don't cover the cost of the Fed. rulebook?

Nope. It may have something to do with the fact that the state high school athletic association does not yet sponsor boys lacrosse here (contrary to what ESPN reported during the final four this year).
Which, paying $6 for a rulebook and, at the same time, getting sent a $6 rulebook I don't really need is only mildly annoying. More annoying is that, IIRC, the minimum order from the NFHS website is $10 before shipping.
Here in Vermont our VLOA dues are $35 and part of that $35 goes to pay for each member's NFHS rulebook. Since I buy the rule books for our group in bulk (through our Vermont Principal's Assoc.)way ahead of time, I think the unit price per book is $4. We even have a VLOA member who lives and refs in Wisconsin who gets his book from me.
Aha...now I understand...because lax isn't a state sponsored activity...you can't get your state association to get you the bulk rate.
I'll bet if you note on your re-upping form for US Lacrosse that you want the Fed rulebook, you could get it.

i re-upped on the Net thru the USL website early so that i could register for the Convention. It wouldn't let me register without re-upping, cause the official's membership term ends in October, the Convention is in January. The Officials dues on the website's membership renewal page (at least the one connected to the process for registering for the Show) was $50. COC dues are, of course, $85 ... so i guess i'll have a hurdle or two to jump thru when it comes time to re-up for COC purposes.
This really could be streamlined a little bit, it seems? I KNOW! Make registration for the US Lacrosse National Convention an MDOC member benefit! um, err.....sorry, sorry...lost my head there a second...
District 3 COC pays an extra $35 (above the $85) to the District to cover an annual Breakfast and the annual Banquet. Does any other District out there have that extra (mandatory) charge?

We don't have a mandatory upcharge, but we do need to join the local LOA for $60 per year.

That's not cool. Is every state doing that?
"That's not cool. Is every state doing that?"
This is the type of thing our new Scholastics Officials Committee Czar, LaxRef, is going to find out!

I guess we have a bargain in Michigan. The MichLOA dues are $10 per year. Of course we don't get a rule book. Also, to do HS you have to pay MHSAA dues which are $30 per year if you are just reffing lax.
I also tried to sign up for the convention on-line, told me I had to renew, which I tried to do on-line, but along with the $50 USL and $35 COC it was adding $25 for late renewal! I called USL and said "how can it be late if it doesn't expire until the end of October?" The girl said it was a problem on the website and would get back to me when it was fixed - still waiting to hear.

If memory serves they arrive in a box in early Jan.

It looks like the NFHS is scheduled to have them available for sale in November. I'd like to get hold of one right away so we have something new to talk about (and so I can start recompiling my list of rules differences!).

OLA runs yearly certification clinics for officials (separate clinics for box, field, and womens field). You cannot referee a league game if you do not have an up to date certification. Levels of certification go from I (i.e. 14 year old kid doing novice games) to VI (senior referee doing semi-pro men's games) Clinics include a written test of rules and mechanics.
Price for the clinic was $85 and includes any dues and a rulebook. At your first clinic, you also need to buy a referee jersey for $40, but you get freebies from the OLA after that.
