it's probably b/c of distraction to goalie or if the goalie has it, to a player...the ref also might not b able to see the ball at all times...i'm not really for the rule but i'd guess that's why

The best reason I have heard is that if they made it legal people would put one big ball sized dot on a darker background. Obviously, that would be pretty cheap. I just never understood why you can have a multicolor traditional, but not mesh.

this might need to be placed in rules/officiating and laxref would get to it

You can't have dyed mesh under any circumstances........it would be considered "cheating" or "having and unfair advantage" that could cause confusion to others and give you the "slight advantage" which is more than enough to score. If you search I do believe this has been discussed...

People ask me that question alot as a goalie. Its stopping someone from dying the whole mesh black except for a white spot on the center. Goalie can't tell if you still have the ball or not. Its a good rule.

Why is it illegal to have half dyed mesh
Because the rules say so. In the NCAA book, under crosse prohibitions, there is the following adminstrative ruling -
A.R. 18. The mesh weaving of a crosse must be of one color. Any attempt to mislead an opponent, such as painting a ball, etc., into the weaving is illegal. RULING: Unsportsmanlike conduct, three-minute non-releasable penalty.
I wouls think that the 3 min NR USC is referring to someone attempting to mislead an opponent with a ball painted in their mesh. If someone just had tie-dyed, it may be better handled as a long-strings situation - get the stick off the field until the mesh is replaced.
Many, many players think that it is the refs who come up withe the rule book. How many realize that it is primarily the work of coaches' committees?? We don't make the laws, we just enforce the ones they give us.

so its isnt that the mesh cant be dyed, it just cant be more than one color, so my solid navy blue monster mesh is OK, but blue and white stripes are a no

coltslax, you are EXACTLY correct.
cubinlobster, just because you buy someting doesnt make it legal. warrior had a problem with a number of sticks that were too narrow from the factory.
it doesnt mattter that they came that way, they are still illegal

I never did get that argument, "I bought it from the store so it must be leagal" - wrong. They really do not care if you buy illegal stuff, if they think you will buy it, they will sell it. Same reason why they sell tinted visors for football. The reason they do not sell many illegal things because if you knew it was illegal you wouldn't buy it.

i relize the world isnt perfect, but they is pretty dishonest of the people making illegal things for profit. a lot of clueless kids will keep buying illegal stuff so i guess that makes it ok... not

The way it's supposed to work is that everyone who gets an illegal stick should return it, and then the equipment sellers will stop stocking it because of the hassle. But as long as they can keep selling illegal stuff and making a profit, they will.

Goalie cant clearly see the ball. Unfair advantage.

Saw a goalie in a middle school game here with a smiley face dyed (probably spray painted actually) in to his goalie stick. It was pretty cool. Since it was the goalie stick and in a fall game at the middle school level, I don't think anyone really cared.
