I just saw a story on Real Sports about the racism that goes on in European football, it was unreal. While I am a fan and do watch occasional games and was aware of a few dumbases who throw bananas at black players I had no idea it was so widespread. Heres the link to a description of the story http://www.hbo.com/realsports/stories/2005/episode.102.s2.html. Anyway, Thierry Henry (striker for Arsenal) and Nike have come together and formed Stand Up Speak Up (http://www.nike.com/standupspeakup/en/home.jsp?page=home) anyway just wanted to let you all know about this and also to buy a wristband to support the fight against racism, they aren't being sold in America but British stores online are selling them. Its a good cause and I was pretty affected by some of the images in the story. If you have hbo i reccomend watching it next time its on.

European Football fans are awful. Those Premiership games, and Champions League matches, along with the Euros and the FA Cup are high stakes, and the fans are absolutely insane. Thierry Henry is one of the best footballers around--I have his French national jersey--and when I teach in London next year, I'll have to keep my eyes open, because anything can happen with those kinds of fans. And despite their pretentiousness and superciliousness, they are very racist.

That is really brutal I knew that the games over their were extremely intense and the fans were very intense but I had no idea about the blatant racism toward players that is awful.

i dont think we as americans can grasp how serious they take soccer because one sport does not dominate the sports world here

Yeah euro football fans do have a tendency to be idiot's and also be very racist, like i am a chelsea fan and to spite the fact that i have never been to a chelsea game in my life time i was really pissed off when in last years european champions league tie between Barcelona and Chelsea, one of the the chelsea stewards called Samuel Eto'o a monkey, now this bloke is obviouley an idiot because if he took a look at the chelsea line up there are a fair few black guys aswell.
Man some socer fans are so dumb they racialy abuse black players but if you think about it Eto'o, Drogba, Viera, Julio Baptista, Seedorf, Davids, Essien, Henry, Klivert, Asamoha, Silva, Wright-Philips, Cole, Campell and about a million other Top class players are black, Wo why do they like a game that is dominated by people they hate, they are just stupid.
P.S i am only talking about a small faction of football fans and on the main part football fans are fine.

Most anywhere there'll be a surprising amount of prejudice and racism...not just limited to Europe either. First world doesn't exactly mean they are utopian. It also means that for all it's problems, America isn't all that bad.

the term Racism has been expanded to include anytime someone mentions anything related to ethnicity....unless it's about white people.
Racism (the real meaning, not the Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton one) still exists here in america, but it's a lot more veiled than it used to be. I also don't think it's "everywhere everyday" unless you're referring to Affirmative Action or the NAACP.

Oops, was that racist? Lord knows you can't disagree with affirmative action and the NAACP without being held out as a racist.

But its not as easy as that.
Regardless of wht you think minorities do not have it as easy as white people getting into college.
Should it be based on grades? - Yes. Should it be based on income - yes! Should it be based on race? No, but lets face it the majority of poor americans are not white... it ends up being a racial equalizer in the end unfortunately.
Its not perfect by any means, but you need to keep it.

That's terrible. It should be based on grades and grades alone. Money? How does that enter into the equation?
Why do you need a racial equalizer? Does this just mean that black people don't do as well in school (grades)? It should be colorblind, that's the only fair way and the perfect way.

Does anyone know if some of the players in Euro soccer do some of those things too? Im sure if some fans are racist then some players are racist...but do they take it as far as the fans?on the field?

I dont want to speak for enjoi, but i think income should be taken into consideration. Im not saying affirmative action for poor people, but scholarships etc. By helping low income you might be helping more minorities, but it IS colorblind because you dont help judged by race. Its not restricted by race. Its not a racial equalizer because it doesnt equalize BASED on race.

That's what need based scholarships are for, and I definitely agree with those...that's the very basis of the american dream. I don't see how that even enters into the affirmative action debate. Affirmative action is choosing one person over another because of their ethnicity, for whatever reason.
