Anybody in or around London, Ontario should go and checkout the team tryouts in London starting today (Oct 5). Times and details are posted on www.2006worldlacrosse.com. Some of lacrosse's top players are listed as attending. Too bad I am so far away.

I'd be there myself, but my rec league is running a tournament that day....I'd barely make the inter-squad game and would miss both of the tests against Canisius.

(BTW - God help Canada if they can't beat the Canisius fall-ball squad!)

Especially since we have their best player from last year, Matt Vinc.

The tryouts were sick....like dirty, take em to the cleaners and they didnt even have John G. there. Some of these new kids are amazing and i can definately see Canada giving USA a run for their money. Australia, sorry boys no chance this year.

Like Tweek, I think this year's Team Canada will be better than the 2002 version. However, Aus has probably made similar improvement.

Hope we can both give the Yanks a scare!

As an aside, Still no luck at finding a score for the Canada vs. Canisius scrimmage.

Rockstar,

Indeed you're right the 'Nuck team will be more formidable and moreover a better field team than Canadian teams of late. Big inclusions will be marecheck, gait, ward, shannon and merill. Plus I think even the lower order players will be better field converts than last team.

This Aussie team will have a few more college ballers and the obvious pro experience with Inge and Juleff (should he try out).

I am curious as to how you see the Canadian goalie situation? will they merely trot out chris sanderson and jeff gombar again? or might they mix it up and put some recent talent in the net ie Miller fresh off four or so years at cornell and the exciting young Peaty?

I know so little about field goaltending that I shouldn't really comment.

The one thing I do know is that Sanderson has a reputation for being able to steal a game single-handedly and probably should have been given a serious look.

That said, I don't know that he's played at high level since the last worlds and someone fresh from a stretch in NCAA might be a better bet.

I've said it before - I fear little in terms of Canada's attack and shooting middies matching up with the world. The offense probably won't have a "classic" look to it, but there's too many snipers/playmakers for it not to fill the nets.

Where Canada's in tough is on defense and goaltending. There's nowhere near as deep a pool of talent to draw from as the US has.

from what little i've seen of Sanderson I wasn't very impressed. In the 2002 tournament when they played USA he wasn't very impressive and was far outshined by Tierney who was excellent. Then again what do i know.
Hopeful either Australia or Canada can defeat america (hopefully Australia mor possibly Canada) but wouldn't a Canada VsAUstralia final be great.

Sanderson played pretty badley in 02, but in 98 on the other hand he set the freakin world on fire, and was rewarded with all-world selection.

Yeah i would feel a lot better if we beat the US in the final, because there is no doubt in my mind that they are the best team in the world.

P.S the best team doesen't always win

The 23 players for the 2006 team are:
Colin Doyle, Gary Gait, John Grant Jr., Stephen Hoar, Tom Marechek, Ryan Marshall, Brodie Merrill, Kyle Miller, Jim Moss, Tom Phair, Gavin Prout, Chris Sanderson, Chris Seller, AJ Shannon, Billy-Dee Smith, Geoff Snider, Steve Toll, Andrew Turner, Matt Vinc, Ryan Ward, Shawn Williams, Taylor Wray, Jeff Zywicki

So they went with Sanderson and Miller in the net

No Kevin Huntley
No Zach Greer
No Alex Peaty
No Devan Wray

Rockstar can you tell me who Andrew Turner, Ryan Marshall, Stephen Hoar and Jim Moss are?

Not sure about Marshall.....name sounds familiar, but I can't place him.

Moss and Turner are easily two of the top 5 box defensemen in the world (they may even be the top two). I have no idea about their field abilities, or whether they'll play defensive middie or pole.

Hoar is also a pro box player. Good two-way player, can take draws. Figure he's probably going to be a two-way middie.

i wonder why greer wasnt picked....i figure if joe walters got picked for the US., someone with Greer's ability would definitly get picked, especially for Canada where field players are at a premium.

It seems part of the reason for Walters making the US squad is the need for a lefty on the man-up. All the Powells are righties.

Greer has had one year of NCAA, is a lefty, and would have to dislodge Gary Gait or John Grant.

Hope that helps explain it.

Ryan Marshall graduated from Duke 2005

He played in the NCAA Div 1 Final vs Hopkins.

I was surprised by no Greer as well, I'd thought he could play middie as he has another 12 months of Div I Field Lacrosse before the World Games.

Long Sticks will be problem for Canada

Jim Moss #55 is an awesome defender at Box Lacrosse, SJ Stealth 05, WILC 2003. He is perpetual motion, even during time-outs you win see him running around the huddle. Part owner of Rudeboys Lax or was.

Ryan Marshall - 2005 Duke graduate - member of 2005 NCAA finalists.

Junior A - Toronto Beaches and one year in Burnaby. I believe that he plays Senior in Burnaby now.

There's a similar thread over on the NLL Forum and I've borrowed some of their info since I can't find the rosters for Canda's U19 teams prior to 2003.

Here's a bit of background on some of Canada's long stick defenders.

Brodie Merrill - Georgetown 2005 1st team AA
Taylor Wray - Duke 2003
Matt Vinc - Canisius 2005
Steve Toll - World Championships 1998, 2002 - all-world selection in 1998?
Jim Moss - World U19 Championships 1999
Andy Turner - World U19 Championships 1999

Agreed, that's a tough cut to make. Gait is there for one last hurrah. He's in great shape and can still make a difference. I'm looking forward to seeing he and Grant work together. (I just hope the coaching staff is strong enough to whip Grant into playing for the team, and not just for John Grant.)

As for Greer - he'll be a fixture on Team Canada for several of these starting with 2010. This year, it's too tough to unseat the other guys. Hell, even if he was willing or able to go as a left-handed offensive middie, who of Shannon, Doyle or Williams do you cut?

cannon
10-17-2005, 06:11 PM
While I am surprised, I can see why they didnt take Greer.

While he is a great player, from memory, he was a ball taxi in 2003 Worlds due to his blinding pace and given the skill of many of the guys in this team he might have that role again. Which perhaps the coaches didnt want?

All in all seems a very strong team with plenty of field experience and as always the question wont be 'can they score' it will be can they stop the US, Australia, England and the Iroqouis from scoring.

Did Tom Hajak try out at all? Obviously a great box defender, but figured a guy who play some good D at UVM would have been a sure shot for a team light on the back end.

I don't think that the Iroquois will upset, but the Australians almost did last time if I'm not mistaken.

I'm also not positive that in every case, Canada's best field lacrosse players were selected for 2006, but we'll see.

Good luck, and don't forget to bump this post if the Aussies upset!

meh whats that guy know he spelt feat "fete".

Maybe he meant "fete". Canada is bilingual (some people anyways), and in French "fete" is "party" .... so if I substitute party in his opening sentence, we get this ...

"The Aussie women did the "impossible" but all the insiders predicted that the party was not only possible, but probable for the not so Cinderella team."

So, the Aussie team had a big party after their win.

It works for me !!

Ted ... you owe me bigtime for saving your butt .... :-)
