Hey guys,
coach tells me that sometimes with my one handed vetical cradle i "ward off" and thats a penalty, now i kinda get what it is, but like can i move my arm to block checks, or does it have to be totally stationary??

you can have it up but if some one puts pressure on it it has to drop down

yea, i put my hand belly button, and keep my arm stiff. that doesn't count as warding off, but its still protection of the stick

For guys lacrosse, your arm has to be totally stationary one you put it out there. You cannot move it around to block checks. Hope this helps.

Warding off has to be an action of the arm, not just a placement, for it to be called i.e. swiping the check away versus a stationary shield.

one thing about putting your arm on your hip, however, is that a brash but accurate defenseman will stick his head in the little triangle formed by your arm and, with a little acting, can easily draw the holding penalty

i protect right in front of me, but dropped a bit like my old avatar... (see picture below)
But you dont have to drop it if it gets checked, you can keep your arm stiff...the rule is "it is illegal to control the movement of another player's stick or body with your off-hand." so you can't put your hands on people either, and you cant grab a stick and throw it away, bat it away, push it down, etc. just keep a stiff arm.

I got called for warding a couple of times last season and when I asked why they told me beacuse my arm was not completely vertical. Now, i thought, like you guys said, that arm position doesnt really matter you just cant move it to block a check. However, these refs are saying otherwise. I wasn't moving my arm, it just wasnt completely vertical.

just keep your arm stiff and make sure while doing so protect your ribs... like so

it's called cupping, i think and you just curl your arm a bit and keep it as stiff as possible, it really helps once you get it down perfectly

i just put my hand right next to my hip w/ my elbow bent a little, and i find that if i flex my hand outward then it helps more for some reason.

wow, i was taught to position my arm differently than you guys... i bend my arm at a right angle and position my hand in front of my left leg... palm facing out... and screw your ribs... dont protect your ribs- use your ribs to protect your stick.
