I was wondering how many people on this site play both field and box lacrosse. I know that obviously field is the majority, but I know that alot of people including myself play both. IMO I think everyone should have the opportunity to play both cuz each is great. For those who actually play(ed) both, which one did enjoy most? Which were you best at? I dont intend this to be a stupid debate over which is "better", cuz I respect both field and box lacrosse and treat them as one sport.

I enjoy box more, and am definatly better at the indoor game. However, I'm getting good in field since I've started playing as well.

Can anyone help make a poll? Field/Box/Both. I cant do it.

Box. Field is just not my cup of tea. Its not that I don't like it, but I just can't get into it like I can with boxla.

i like field a bit better because it's just so much more wide and strategetical and stuff..but if field had the roughness of box and intensity it would be ultimate!and im waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better at field

Box. In field all my unnescesary violence just doesnt seem the same as it would in boxla. Plus box is such a faster paced, quicker thinking game.

ust because in your area feild lacrosse is bigger doesent mean every where else is the same. where i lve box murders feild in terms of popularity.and yes i play both and i recommend playing both for these three simple reasons one, feild keeps you in shape when box isent on and box keeps you in shape while feild isent on.two....i think the skills required in box could be helpfull when mixed with feild and feild skills could help you in box. and three....more practice witch in my oppinion is the best way to get better

yea i play both
but i love box over feild
box is great because of the atmousephere that you get in the locker room it is intence
and the 30 second shot clock speads the the game up
and i love the contact like hitting the cuters (in box you need ball to cut)
but most of all it is tken more serious than feil up here in B.C. doent know why their both great i gess some people doent like to play in the snow
but i cant really compair witch i am better at because in box i play mainly defence and take faceoffs but i doo play some ofence i got 21 goals and 19 assists last season
abd in feild i play attack and middie and biggin and goal hell i play all the possitions because were luckey to have 12 kids show to a game ware in box we get 16-19 players but u only play 5 runners at a time
i feild i have 13 goals in 3 games

what i like about......

BOX
picks
cross checks
the 24' crease
loose balls in the corner
the 30 second shot clock
the goalies (takes skill to score on a box goalie)
the fast pace
in a confined area
never gets rained out
loud in the building
the atmoushphere in the dressing room
fighting
being ruff

FEILD
goalies(how easy it is too score)
bigsticks(how easy it is to beat them)
face offs (nice and dirty)
just being out side
lost of room to run

what i doent like about

BOX
that it doent go all year round

FEILD
not enought hitting
no crosse checking
cant hit cutters

i perfer box, it just gets the blood pumping faster then field and in ontario(at least) there is a rule were if you dont start to move the ball towrds the goal in 24 seconds you lose the ball.

i really couldn't pick one over the other... i mean i love lacrosse because it's lacrosse. box is more intense but when there is hits in field they are usually bit hits... field is a bit slower but there is also more room to move and more opportunities come from it.

I don;t really like feild too much running too slow, and crappy players are good just because of big nets and crap goalies. I just polay because I like lacrosse and it keeps me in shape. box is where it's at, way better game imo.

you can go way further in feild than box
becasue of scolorshmy coach has been telling me about scororship oppertunities for a while
and their is a scout up here looking at some players

plus today in my game i was asked the the opposing teams coach if i would like to be on the national team and in febuary they are going to california for two weeks for soem tourniments

I'm going to allow this one, for two reasons.

First...I have no idea where that other thread is
Second...I'm admittingly too lazy to find out and do it.

Besides, we're having a very healty discussion about box lax, and how much better it is than field...er uh...I mean how great the two genres are as compared to one another (yeah thats the ticket).

alot of the people who posted in here are from canada, which means they are used to box so they like to play it more.. we need more people from the states posting in this thead. as for me i really enjoy box but we only play it in the winter like twice a week and like one tourny in the summer here. i like box alot better i think just because i think i get sick of feild because our team practices and plays it all year around. plus.. who doesnt love throwing down a nice cross check when you never get to in feild.

Superman, here's an aussie's view. As I said in the other thread (This is it Hooligan)http://www.lacrosseforums.com/showthread.php?t=29839

I like 'em both. In field I play D and in box we play transition so I get a go at both ends of the floor.

I just love sports where they give you a weapon and encourage you to use it.

i play both and i live in Ottawa and ive never heard that rule and ive been playin box for 6yrs.... anyways like b-boy lax_man said box dominates feild in the Ottawa area, not sure bout Toronto becuase they have quite a bit of teams for feild, but in Ottawa Nepean Knights tyke-juniorB and Glouster Griffins same deal is really for the past 4yrs all theres been for lax here, only in the last year has U12-U17 feild been available.i enjoy feild a little bit more b/c i sorta tend to play D anyways in box, so feild is perfect b/c of the defensive position, and the rules really help defencemen adapt to both game types.i would say im better at feild but i will see this year durning box which is better :guns:

yea in box their is a lot more hitting but not a lot of huge ones
but hitting some one into the boards rocks
in feild their is littile body hit but wen they happen they are huge
last game i came of a late change and i was sprinting towards the goal
and a pass was droped and a biggie was trying to pick it up and i hit him perpect sholder right to the chest
sent him flying
and i am a big guy
6'1
225lbs
and i run the 50m in 7.1 seconds

I play Goalie in both. They are different enough that I am not sure it is fair to single one out over the other but If I had to choose I would say I am having a blast in indoor.

A lot more pressure rides on the Goalie in indoor, way more shots on goal, and when your hot you can have a huge impact on the game. I've noticed that when I do well the high is enormous and when I do poorly the low is devastating.

Ok.. I've played both field and box,,, I have played a rather high level of lacrosse in both respects..... I don't think it's fair to say one is better than the other, or make generalizations based on limited experience.. I have played field for most of my life, and only recently picked up the box game.. There are some rules and game play things that I do not like about box, but I do not have enough experience in box to have a real opinion just yet.. What I can tell you is that I think it's a lot easier in some respects for a field player to transfer his skills to the box game, than it is for a box player to move to the field game (of course this is only my opinion, and obviously there are many exceptions)... I have found that being able to go both right and left has given me a distinct advantage over my canadian/native counterparts.. generally, in box you want to balance the field, so that your shooters on either side have a good angle to the goal with their sticks to the middle, well, if you have one or two more leftys for instance, they would have to sub off... if, however, I were In there, I could simply switch sides and switch hands.. now, on box players making the transition to field play... generally, with larger goals and much better crease/picking skills, box players are able to transition to the crease/x play of field easily, whereas they may struggle in the defensive side with so much room behind them.. they may be so used to nearly face guarding their opponents that it is hard for them to learn to sag to the middle and let their man cut freely and pick freely...

not sure what it's worth, but right after my box season, I played modified box in my home town with field rules.. I was cross checking all over, blowing people off picks, etc.. and kept getting whistles.... I was so frustrated that I couldn't play the way I had become used to playing, and I can see how a box player who has played exclusively boxlax, would get entirely frustrated with the field game.. and likewise, I can see how a field player gets entirely frustrated with the box game, as I did when I first started playing..

as I have stated earlier.. there are some things I do not like about box, but I can see how they are essential to the box game.. for instance, I do not like being cross checked in the back when I am on crease, nor do I like being blown off a pick when setting a pick, but I can see how these two "moves" are essential to the game.. If I weren't harrassed on the crease, I could just post up and dunk all day.. If I were allowed to pick at will, I could destroy any defense with backdoor cuts much easier...(pick-and-roll)... so, while I hate being harrassed, and such, I can see how it is necessary, and I'm sure that over time I will be able to adjust better and protect myself against such things..

I think that the two "worlds" of lacrosse, box and field are similar in some respects, but extremely different both in strategy and overall game play.. I think it is unfortunate, however, that so many field players have not really been exposed to the real box game, and so many box players have not been exposed to the real field game.. Obviously this is changing quite rapidly with many canandians making the transition to NCAA play and many on-the-border players in the states beginning to discover box..

I would discourage anyone who is quick to make a judgement either way about box or field.. I think that with time and experience, you can love each form of the game equally...

both games are tight, but I like field cause I love the running. Box is also a little harder for me because opponents dont get as tired due to running. Doesn't play to my advantage... crazy scoring machines

Well said indeed Wheelax2 - great post!

While I highly value a player's ability to be able to switch hands, in box it is less of an advantage than field mainly because the play is so much faster in a tighter space. Coaches tend to want fresh legs at the earliest opportunity and line changes compensate for most situations where one side of the floor becomes too strong.

One other 'bad' thing about switching hands in box is I have seem too many wasted opportunities with blown shots from a weak hand. Yikes kids! If you are going to use your weak hand to shoot, learn to rip bullets will ya! :agree: And if you are going to rip shots with your weak hand, wear a bicep pad on that weak arm too!

 And last, but not least, if some kid pulls a hand-direction switch on you, for a split second they are going to be off balance and prime candidate for a well timed cross-check... er... I mean "push-check."

Yup. In tighter quarters, the focus of defense is more on taking the body than on maintaining position, and slapping/poking the hands.

Landing a crosscheck isn't affected by which hand the victim's stick is in.

As a shooter, I love to play box lacrosse because it emphasizes stick skill proficiency to the maximum. My favorite thing is to see kids play box for the first time when they are used to playing field lacrosse. More often than not the first time they shoot the ball they miss the goal by five miles. It's hilarious. Usually, it'll be a player who's a decent field lacrosse player who is overreliant on whipping the ball with reckless abandon on 6x6 and, more or less, getting lucky.

i play both, i first started with box thou. starting with field i didnt like it too much i was playing with ppl 3-4 years older and the only team we ever played was by far the best in the province at the time so they would just toy with us. i would choose box for 3 reasons. 1) the box league is way more organized 2) i play box with people my age and 3) no1 took field as serious as box which took away from it, it was a kind of thing to do on the side when you wernt playing hockey. (we did however manage to win multiple provincial titles and own some US teams)
