Why eff around with a soup can?

For field players:

You know the ball is 2.5" wide, so when you tie your head up for pinching, just move a ruler up the throat to make sure it's not narrower than, say 2.6" to 2.7" at any point.

Or if you're a box player, you don't really give a rat's arse if the throat's a bit tighter than the ball.

(The CLA rule for box is that the sidewalls can't trap the ball in a vertical roll test through the whole pocket. By the letter of the rulebook, you can actually have sidewalls narrower than the ball. You just need to flare the sidewalls so they're slightly wider than the ball at the bottom and/or have a deep enough pocket so the ball rolls right under the overpinched sidewall. This is the rule in theory - we all know that in practice, NO ONE asks for stick checks unless you're playing with a 30" stick!)
