Team A is short one man due to a penalty. According to 4-4-2 "if a team has one or more players out of the game on a penalty, that team shall be exempt from confining it's players behind the defensive area lines and in the wing areas to the extent of its players in the penalty area."

Regular practice would be to bring an attackman to the wing area for the faceoff (keeping him onside). Could Team A start with 3 attackman and d-men behind their restraining lines when play starts and then release one attackman or defensemen to get a loose ball near midfield?

Absolutely not. If you start behind the restraining line, you have to wait for possession to be called. Nice try, though.

That's what I was thinking but just going through the rulebook again and again always leads to a new question. My thought process was that 4-4-1 pertained to even strength and 4-4-2 was man-up, man-down.

I see the error in my ways. :banghead:
