scoop with two hands...so many times a midi feels over confident and trys scooping with one and looses a possesion he should have had...i am a midi and you dont nessesarily have to RUN for a long time but make sure when the time comes you RUN! work on leg work and try to coordinate your foot patterns with your moves ex. swim,fake....ppl try these in games when they have never done it for practice...and you can never be too good at cradling so work on your ball control the better you control your balls the better PLAYA you are

Don't forget that just because the other team has the ball means you can slack. Its fairly common to see middies slacking off when they should getting back to defend and it just makes life harder on the D.

There is never a reason that you should be afraid to pass the ball. Many times I see middies not passing and getting run over, you need to use your teammates to help.
don't chase a guy too far out, because that means they are smarter than you and when he dodges you, both you and your team are way screwed. so when someone yells fall back, look and see where you are, and be sure they aren't talking to you, because if they are, you better listen.

On D, always suck in and be ready to help out the guy next to you. NEVER follow a guy you're guarding if he pulls it back. If he wants to shoot from really far away, let him.
On Offense, never hold the ball, keep passing it, rotate, and find the open guy. You should play up high on offense to spread the D, and just make sure you can see the whole field.
Transition... Just be ready to sprint a whole lot, and make sure you can get ground balls, never overrun a ground ball either.

use two hands on ground balls. simple, i know, but sooo many people try to pick a GB up one-handed. this leads to either 1) a penalty for playing with one hand off the stick (if you dont pick it up in your first pass) or 2) a hard check to the arm (which hurts tremendously) or to the stick (which leaves you without a stick, which keeps you from helping out your team because if you do, your get called for playing w/o your stick. this isnt hockey folks)

i didn't know there was a penalty for playin with one hand
laxfreghtrain
02-19-2004, 09:20 PM
well, no, not in the sense that you cannot play with one hand such as when you are using the one-handed cradle, but if one was to pick up the ball only using one hand and fails to do so on the first attempt, the assumption is that said player would use his free hand to impede the opposing player from picking up the ball, therefore the ruling would be interference

that's horrible advice. doing that prevents you from being able to pass/feed/shoot straight out of cradling because you have to take an extra second or two to put your hands in the proper shooting position. that advice is what old old OLD girls coaches tell new players, and even in that situation it's wrong too.
You should cradle with your hands in the same position as it takes to catch and throw. You should be able to be cradling and then pass/shoot at anytime without hesitation. From when you receive a pass, run down the field cradling and then take a shot, your hands really shouldn't move at all up and downt he stick, they should be in the same spot.

thats not neccisarily the best advice
iyou should cradle where you feel compfortable cradleing and pass/shoot where you feel compfortable passing and shooting...if these spots happen to be different you should practice transitioning between these two places on the lacrosse stick

Well, I wouldn't say that your hands shouldn't move along the stick at all, but they should at least be in position to make a quick pass. I move my hands farther down my stick while shooting than when I'm cradling.

Think defense first: dont over comit to a groundball on offense and get beat to the whole. IF there is a doubt, drop the the whole, play defense inside out, dont slide upfield

where i catch and cradle my hands are in two different places. I just naturally slide my hand down when im passing and slide back up when im cradeling. Also sub out if your tired. your no good is you cant run.

Be proficient with all techniques with both your left and right hand. Be able to pick up ground balls at full speed, and know how to lead a fast break or a slow break.
Running is the most important thing you need. Middies need to be able to run at nearly full potential the whole game, but they also need to be able to have a lot of speed for fast breaks.
Being able to put on a big hit is also nice a nice skill to have...A lightning fast middie with big body checking skill=owned.

The number one thing that guarantees success at midfield, is to think defense first. On the offense is where middies should get there rest. If a middie plays as hard as he can on defense, he will be rewarded on offense.
And attackmen.. give the middies a break,, they just got you the ball.. if there isn't a fast break situation, don't turn it over! pull it out.. let them rest .. get it around the perimeter.

never set up a dodge while standing still. if go right as you recieve a pass, you can catch the defense off guard.

i sometimes feel like im the attackmen's lil bitc*** cuz i just feed them the ball :crying: :crying: :crying:
Haha, I don't let that happen to me, because on the fast breaks, I just dodge all the defenders and put the ball in the damn net myself...
I average more points and assists than all of our attackman every game. It's pretty sad.
This is the thing i love and hate about being a middie, you have to be good at everything. On offense, when dodging pick a dodge and a direction and just commit fully to that and have confidence in yourself. If you're driving and you find yourself stuck, just curl out and reset or dump it. Run hard on transitions back to D. When on D play with your feet because you don't have the luxury of a long pole. Now the most important thing about lacrosse in any position after, catching, throwing and cradling, are ground balls. Being able to run into a pack of four people at full speed and come out with the ball is a skill that'll make you priceless.

first of all when u are doing a dodge keep ur head up. if u look down more often than not u WILL go down.trust me.next make sure u can go righty and lefty. the defense a lot of times will push u to ur left and whenu can take it lefty from there than u will be 10 times more effective. look for cutters, look for the open man. if u get a shortie (short pole) defending u , then try to dodge and take it to the cage. if u get a long pole on u, thenlook for the open man or try to put it at x then he will set things up. next, dont ever give up. dont stop till the whistle blows. if ur tired, wave ur stick in the air and call for a sub. ur coach should take u out then. also try everything u can. remember, its only illegal if u get caught. so if can do it, than do it. dont be afraid to hit people either. if ur big u might want to go with a bull dodge where as if ur smaller, then u should try to go with a good split or face dodge. and lastly, let everything flow. make everything become one motion.
