In box lacrosse (or field for that matter) I believe the goalie can legally handle the ball with his free hand and drop it in his crosse to throw. First, am I wrong about this? Second, if it is true, can the goalie do this outside of the crease?

I ask this because in our club play there is alot of banging of the goalies stick after he traps the ball (crosse in or out of the crease). It seems to me the safest way for the goalie to transition the ball from underneath his stick to the crosse is to reach underneath and grab it.

do u mean like if u get a shot and it deflects in the crease and u would go to pick it up with ur hand to put in ur stick? i thnk that is legal but i'm almost positive that u cannot do that outside of the crease, u would get called for handling the ball with ur actually hands instead of ur stick

Here's the situation I would do it in: For what ever reason the ball is on the ground inside the crease or just outside the crease. I am the goalie inside the crease and I clamp the ball with my stick. There are a ton off opposing attackers standing right there trying to get the ball. I reach under my clamped stick and grab the ball then drop it in my crosse (which is now protected by the interference rule). Is this legal as long as I am in my crease?

I'm a CLA box ref.

You can pick up the ball with your hand as long as you are in the crease. If you are outside the crease you do not have goaltender privilege so it would be a handball. Whistle, and award possession to attacking team.

Note that if you clamp inside the crease, they are not allowed to check your stick, so there's no point handling the ball. In box they can't even reach for a looseball in the crease, so just scoop it when you're ready.

In field it's ruled as a Hand Ball (and features one of the most suggestive hand signals used in sports :naughty: ) and results in loss of posession. I've only seen it called twice over tha past few years.

Cheaters all! (But only in field lacrosse)
The goalkeeper may stop or block the ball in any manner with his crosse
or body. The goalkeeper may block the ball or bat it away with his
hand, but he may not catch the ball with his hand. However, if the ball
is outside the crease, the goalkeeper may not touch it with his hand
even if he is within his crease.
A couple of AR's on the topic:
A.R. 73. A loose ball is on the ground in the crease or is in the air above the crease. Team
A goalkeeper, who also is in the crease, uses his hand to bat the ball into his crosse or
out of the crease. RULING: Legal play.
A.R. 74. Loose ball in the crease. Team B goalkeeper picks up the ball with his hand and
puts the ball in his crosse. RULING: Technical foul. Ball is awarded to Team A outside
the attack area.

So the goalie is allowed to sweep the ball into his crosse as if he was collecting crumbs off the table, can block a shot with his hand, but cannot at any time grasp the ball in order to catch it or pick it up.

Play on!

Box or field? I cannot speak for box, but picking up the ball with your hand is not legal. You can however hit the ball with you glove to save it if you are a goalie.

Or bat it into your stick.

I wanted to know for box more than field becuase that is where it allways seems to happen but it is good to know about field as well.

So Rockstar, if I am in the crease but the ball is clamped outside of the crease can they still touch my stick? And the reason I want to do it while in my crease is that in the motion of uncovering the ball and going for the scoop the attackers jam their sticks on the ball as though the ball were loose and try to flick it into the goal. The refs aren't calling it interference so I want to avoid that situation by just picking up the ball while keeping it covered with my crosse. Also, there are times when I clamp the ball but they have their sticks trapped under mine to prevent the rake, so I reach under and pick up the ball. Legal?

Are you playing under CLA rules or NLL rules?

Under CLA rules, attacking players are not allowed to pick up loose balls inside the crease. Also, they are not allowed to touch the goalie's stick inside the crease.

Under NLL rules, if the ball is still loose inside the crease, attacking players can still go for it.

In both CLA and the NLL, the goalie can still pick up the ball with the hand while it is still in the crease.

I am playing NLL.

What about if the ball is not in the crease but the goalie is? Does the goalie need to rake the ball into the crease first or is it legal for him to pick it up if it is out but he is in?

You cannot control the ball with any hand in field lacrosse.

The goalie needs to rake the ball with the stick into the crease first if it is outside the crease, provided that at least one foot is inside the crease. However, the goalie can still pick up the ball outside the crease with the stick and not the hand if he is still inside the crease, but the stick outside the crease is fair game.

You cannot control the ball with any hand in field lacrosse.

The goalie, while in the crease, can deflect the ball with the hand, but cannot close the hand on the ball in field lacrosse.
