I just had the good fortune to be able to shadow 5 or 6 games in a 2 day period during our international tournament here in Hawaii. What a learning experience!!

To be able to be with the eyes and ears of professional/world certified referees, and having them explain any rulings, questions and mechanics was an eye opening experience. Expecially at this level of play. Even sitting on the sidelines with this great bunch of guys was educational - and FUN.

For all you newbies out there (and even some of you not so newbies), take any opportunity that is presented to do this. I found it to be a great learning experience.

I can't wait 'till next year!!

Part of our training for new guys in our area is to have an experienced ref run with (shadow) the new fellow on the far side and gently tell him where to be/go and what to look for and what to call. Part of what needs to be discussed beforehand, though, is how much info/input the new guy wants as the game goes on.

dislaxxic: DUH - offer her a free trip to Hawaii!!! A lot of the guys had their wives there (maybe it was the only way THEY could come). And good idea having a tournament here in January. I bet it would be well attended. Maybe we could make it part of the convention!

And EME, my shadowing was the opposite of what you said you do. I ran along side and they told me why they did what. I got to experience the proper mechanics of a fight and EVERYTHING!
