Im in Ext class right now and i need opions. Im Making a robotic arm made of wood and it has to be able to pick up a 3'x1' chunk of wood. I began to make the claw to pick up the wood today and im stumped, I can either use Wood glue, wich i hear is pretty strong for holding wood togter or nails. I think naisl are stronger but im thinking i should use wood glue too, and i cant use both! What to do!

i say you use the nails, only because nails are usually better. but is it wood nails or normal nails?? just make sure not to split the wood.

depends on whgat kind of wood working, I am in advanced wood working so I use glue because it is so strong and is a better finish look

Last year we were making some type of land boat out of wood. WE started to use wood glue. Our tech teacher said to wood glue the peices together and then add nails. This makes it stronger.

If your quantity of nails available for use is unlimited, I would choose the nails.

i personally would go with gorilla glue. it holds my old wood bow together, its unbeleivably strong.

Even if you just used regular white carpenter glue to fasten two pieces of wood together, the joint will be stronger than the solid wood.
Ask your shop teacher. Better yet, check the glue bottle - I think the shear strength is about 3,000 PSI, which is definitely higher than softwood.
There are other good types of glue as well. For woodwork I usually use urethane glue and screws (screws mostly so I don't have to F around with clamps)....the urethane is strong and waterproof, sets fairly quickly, and expands nicely to seal cracks.
Nails are no where near this strong.

Can you make it from a hockey stick? Some wooden ones are made of laminated wood, and some are made of a single piece of wood. I don't have to tell you that you really have to smack one big time to break the shaft.
