I live in miami and as some of you might know we were just struck with hurricane wilma i was out of school for about a week and a half which was good but i had no power the whole time i just got power back yesterday at night and i just recently got internet cable etc. back. So basically i had 11 days without power or anything just running water. I would just like to tell everyone that i learned that we all take power for granted I was so bored and tired (i couldnt sleep for some reason) Has anyone else lost power for an extended period of time and why. I know it is unfathomable for some of you to think of this but once youve gone through it you never think about life the same way.

A week. It wasnt too bad. I still hung out with my friends. I had trouble sleeping too. It was after Hurricane Isabel, like mid-September, so it was decently warm.

During hurricane Fran we were without power for over two weeks. A couple years ago we lost power for over a week during an icestorm. It got down to 18 degrees and we had no heat.
I know how much it sucks.

Lost power for 3-5 days. There was a city wide blackout in 2002-2003. WE had to eat cold food most of the time.

^ yea if your talking about that blackout that happened in like August a years ago? The one that started up in canada but ppl thought it was Terrorism. My dad was stuck in NYC for the night. It sucked for him cuz his floor in the building was like 50th or sumthing in the city. He slept in the lobby lol, but ppl had it worse...but you had it much worse! Thank god i was in japan then

I lost power for about 3 days. My city's powerlines are all underground so it helps (some people in my city didn't even LOSE power). That was the first real hurricane I stuck around for... very scary experience.
We had to batten the doors with couches and stuff, and once the back half of the hurrican came the winds shifted, and this huge gust came and almost sucked these french doors i have that lead to my patio-- and if a door or window goes, it's only a matter of minutes before your roof flies away -- so me and my dad had to hop up and hold the door shut against 150mph gusts (it creates ALOT of pressure) for an hour -- seriously, i was holding onto the handle with my heels dug into the ground like I was playing tug-o-war with the denver broncos... it tired me out very quickly. And then the wind was also pushing our front door in so I had to hold that up for a while, then this huge window we have above the front door was like bending in from the wind about to just break and go everywhere, and then some windows leaked a little bit (we thought they were roof leaks at first and that means your house is about to go bye bye), the plywood over my bedroom window flew off and such.
You could hear these creaks/bumps on the roof and I asked my dad what that was and he's like "Those are barrel tiles flying off the roof" Barrel tiles are those clay shingle like things that are on every house down here.
The damage wasn't anything compared to our neighbors'... we were watching our neighbor's screen around their patio just fly away, ours only got a little bent and lost a screen or two, people had trees on their cars/houses, fences just flattened, a little flooding, but everyone busted out their rakes and moved the branches that were clogging the drains and all. I took a drive a day later and you'd have to navigate your way through the downed lines and fallen over trees on the roads. One part of the road for about 2 miles was closed outside my neighborhood because the trees completely blocked it. My town looks so different.
Very scary day.
Then no power for 2-3 days, cable didn't work until the 4th or 5th day, etc. I'm happy I got it all back so quickly.

Well about two years ago I was with out power for about 2 weeks, a little less. Ice storm came, pretty much killed everything because once everything freezes over to a certain point, then high winds come, everything just comes down. The main thing that stinks about it was the fact that it was mid-winter so that meant no electricity, no heat, no driving around (roads were a mess to begin with), and days are much shorter. So nothing to do with days much shorter and you're freezing. We had one heated room though because of a fire place and that was about it. All we did was sit around and have a good family bonding time. My school got power after the weekend so we only missed like 4 days of school, but I was out of power until the end of the week. Generally you can expect power to go out once a year due to the snow and such. It just happens and people prepare for it. Just ride it out and relax, take advantage of all the free time you get.
When it's over, you get to have the fun time of removing all the fallen trees and everything else that gets messed up. It's probably nothing close to a hurricane, but people do have trees fall onto their houses and a lot of damage does come from it.

At most I've been without power for 3 days. After that, I felt like killing my little brother. Oh man, it was bad. It showed me that I needed to spend some more time with the fam, so that was a good thing that came out of it.
17 hours in the VT Ice Storm of '98. Other people were without it for a long time, but I was 10 and terrified. Now, I'd be ticked, but I'd drive around, charge my iPod in my car and hang out with my bros and stuff instead of sitting in my house reading every book there is. Ugh.

If JoshM is from NC, I think i was in the same icestorm. For some odd reason, it was colder inside my house than outside, so we just hung around in the ice.

Yep, it was. We have a beach condo and were going to go the beach since they had power, but we thought the power was going to be restored within a day or so. Wrong.
