im a senior in high school and i have this really big urge to play hockey. last year, i had the same urge to play lacrosse and i ended up doing it and it was the best decision ive ever made. im planning on going to prep school next year(for lax) and i really wanna learn how to play goalie in hockey. it looks like an awesome sport and was wondering waht you guys think. should i try to buy some hand me down pads and try to play? is it worth learning if im only playing it for 1 year? im not sure what to do.

hockey is great. I would pick up some pads and go to some open ice times or some drop in games at you local rink. If you like it, go with it

Can you skate?

Believe it or not, Goalie is the hardest position for someone who is not a strong skater.

yeah it is. i play goalie. you gotta be so strong on your skates and you have to be able to move in every direction really quick. goalie gear is expensive, even second hand so i would say try and see if you can borrow some gear first

Quoted for importance. If you are going to play for just one year, then I would not do it. Unless you are going to skate for a couple of hours everyday, you can never make up for the skating skills that other career hockey players have aquired. You could try it this year, and then just keep playing for fun at open hockey or in a men's league. Also, if you are going to play goalie, be prepared to drop close to 1,000 on equipment, even if it is hand me down type of deal. If you can make these sacrifices, then I would definately go for it. However, if you do, you should continue playing down the road

lol just 1???? THeres more hockey rinks per capita in my town than in anywhere else in Canada. I think theres probably 7 with in 10 minutes of driving from my house. Theres 36 different arena locations in our city, 4 of them house more than one rink in each

Yeah...I'd advise you against goalie. I played Goalie as a kid and teen, and goalie has to be the BEST skater on the ice. And the NHLers make those sick saves look easy. It's not as easy as it looks. You'd probably do better out of the net, but you'll have to do some SERIOUS practice to get the skating, stickhandling, and other fundamentals down...

You should it's really fun. Last year was my first year playing(freshman) now sophmore. I had always wanted to play and i jsut went for it. But keep in mind hockey is pretty expensive. You better be willing to shell out them oney for it. But man hockey is a fun sport. Go for it.

hockeys is awesome. I used to play on a team when I was little, then I just stopped and I totally regret it. Except now it would be weird to play on a guys team. But yeah go for it.

i dont know about where you are... but here in oswego its basically like if you havent been playing hockey since you were about 4, you have no chance in playing for school. but if you really want to play, you should be able to find some kind of rec league. good luck

Yay some1 not stupid. A goalie WILL skate more than any other position in a game on the average 30 shot games. Reflexes are important but challenging and reading the paly is much important since if the shot is wide or right at you reflexes are insignififagant(sp?). if i was you id play forward or defense get good at skating and then try your hand at goalie. Out is a lot less money too.

Hockey is amazing, if I wasnt in college, and had more time....I would play every day. Go out and give it your best shot, atleast you tried.

go ahead and give it a shot but if your not any good (which itll be hard to become in less than a year) it aint gonna be any fun. hockey goalies are the hardest of themselves than anyone else on any hockey team. and they only make one or two mistakes a game (leading to one or two goals). when a player makes a mistake.. its "oh darn now i have to skate hard". i think itd be a lot more fun to just mess around with friends at pickup. but if your really intent on playin goalie... GO FOR IT... players will thank you when they get to stop playin posts during pickup
