I'm 15, 6'1 and roughly 185 lbs. To play defensive end for a division 2A varisty football team, what should my max bench and squat be? (Disregard age and weight; height allows for additional bulk)

my max squat for 10 reps is 450lbs (using squat machine so my back isnt injured) and my bench is 220 i gotta work on my benchpress. And im 5' 8 most 15 and 185lbs

Ok so that 'most' in front of the 15 must mean ALMOST. So you're fourteen and can bench 220 and squat 450 x 10? Abnormal? Kinda.

he said in the squat machine and that is way diffrent than free weights. i could bench 205 when i was 14 last year and now i can bench 255. i also squat 300 (free weights)

yeah, a squat machine may just be a track with clips on it, that way if he drops the bar, it wont crush him.

but im 18, i squat 325, bench 255, but i do a lot of reps. 5 sets of 8. im 6'2 215

Laxmiddie I totally agree no hack squats, or smith machine squats count, it is simply not the same it is easier because stabalizer muscles are not being put into play, this goes for almost any machine. No one can tell you what you should be benching, squating, or deadlifting to get into a sport, there isn't an answer for that. But you are a big kid so I'm sure you can do a bit of weight, just lift an get stronger. I hate doing one reps maxes so I will not put up what I do, but my bench isn't anythig special.

Instead of worrrying about how much you can lift just continue lifting and work on your football skills. If you spend too much time in gym and could lift a horse but you can get around the guy blocking you then the time in gym was wasted effort because you wouldnt get a starting varsity spot.

Franks the should focus on both, that only happens if he does not train correctly.

hey man, its not how much you can bench or squat. is about how fast you can exert the force. There is a kid on our football team that can bench 315, squat 450, deadlift 500 some odd pounds ( if you havent guessed he's a power lifter), he only weighs 180. And he cant hit anyone for shiz. its all about explosions man. you should be focusing on powercleans or clean n jerks if you want to be "powerful".

And squats, and deadlifts, any power/explosive movement. Also if he wants to see gains refulary he should switch it up every 6 or 8 weeks.

Who really cares about max numbers...train the entire body with intensity. Keep the movements safe - max numbers have no coorelation to playing ability. When I used to be the Army Lax Strength Coach - our best attackman couldn't bench or squat his weight...due to his terrible genetics...but he could play. We focused on training the entire body and didn't overemphasize any exercise. On the other hand, we had a guy that could bench 375lbs and squat over 500lbs and didn't step on the field. Be careful with Olympic lifts as well...weigh out the risks/benefit of each exercise. We never did any Olympic movements and we were always a top 10 team. We focused more on basic plyometric/speed improvement drills.

now is that squat going down to parallel? because if not it really doesnt meant to much. Im not doubting you or anything dont get me wrong, i just know a lot of people who say they can do 400+ and they dont even go close to parallel.

Hes doing it on a machine so therefore it is void regaurdless of being parallel.
