View Full Version : Interesting Crease Situation

I was thinking of this after seeing the "Goal or Not" thread. Say someone has lost their balance on the opposing team's creae, and is about to fall in, with the ball in his stick. One of his teammates sees this, and runs over and grabs his jersey of arm, and prevents him from falling in. The player is extended so far that his stick, with the ball in it, went past the goalie and into the net. So the stick with the ball in it is inside the goal, and then a defender comes rushing in, and breaks the grip that the teammate has on the jersey, the ball falls out, into the goal before the player falls into the crease. I don't think there are any rules, but would refs call some sort of USC or misconduct on the player who prevented the crease violation?

There is a rule/A.R. that says that a goal cannot be scored if it crosses the goal line while still in the head of a stick. This is to prevent instances where a shot happens but the screw comes out and the head and ball go flying into the goal, but I would think if there are no other rules preventing this that this would cover your described situation if need be.

something happened like that in the wilc of 2003 in the final canadavs. iriquios canada was winning like 19-5 and toth shoots from just inside the restarining line and the head of his stick with the ball in goes in top corner so sweet but they dis allowed.

yeah i don't thnk there is a rule about it but if i was a ref i would call it a no goal since his teammate grabbed his jersey to prevent the crease violation...but i guess some refs would let it slide

There is absolutely no justification for disallowing the goal based on the teammate helping to prevent the crease violation.
However, the rules are clear that there is no goal unless there is a loose ball in the goal. For example, if the goalie's stick with the ball in it breaks the plane of the goal (and the ball is completely inside the goal), that is not a goal unless the goalie drops the ball while it's in there.

No problem with the teammate holding the jersey - smart play. Stick extended in the goal - OK, as long as there is no contact with the goal, the net or the goalie, but it is not a goal yet. If a defender besides the goalie makes contact with his stick and it drops in the goal - GOAL, as long as he doesn't touch the pipes, net or goalie. If the goalie checks his stick, no goal.

If the goalie checks his stick, no goal.
On what do you base this claim? The goalie is initiating the contact. See:
A.R. 85. There is a loose ball in the crease. A1 covers the ball to rake it back. Goalkeeper checks A1’s crosse. RULING: No interference.
Have you seen those Cirque de Soleil circus acrobats who are mad strong? Well what if you & and your teammate are like those guys? Your teammate holds you by your legs while you're stretched out like a horizontal body flag. Your buddy holds you over the crease, and then you dunk the ball into goal w/ your stick. It's not a dive, b/c at no time is your body launched through mid-air. There's no crease violation, b/c no part of either you nor your teammate's body is on or inside the crease. Goal of no goal?
What if a gopher pops out of the ground, picks up the ball, carries it into the goal, and drops it off? Would that count, b/c it would in golf?
What if you have such a powerful shot that you shoot into the back side of the net, put a hole through the net, and the ball still ends up inside of the goal?
What if on a shot, the goalie reaches out w/ his hand to deflect the shot, but the shot is so hard that it knocks the glove off his hand? The ball subsequently ends up inside the goal, but w/ the goalie's glove wrapped around the ball. Goal or not? If not, would that be withholding the ball from play on the goalie's part?

oooooohh, these are goood
Cirque shot, I'm gonna say goal
Gopher shot -- goal
Schwartzenegger shot -- no goal. I think it's got to at least break the plane of the goalline in the proper direction
Glove shot -- goal. I'd consider that a loose ball because the glove is no longer on the goalie and the shooter's stick is still legal (as opposed to the flying head situation).

Ball has to be loose and - "...pass from the front completely through imaginary plane....". If the ball is in a crosse in possession of a player (defense or offense) and passes throught the imaginary plane from the front and then becomes loose - no goal - it has to start as a loose ball from out front and pass through the plane before it can be a goal.

That is not correct. See:
A.R. 42. Goalkeeper, who is in possession of ball in crease, brings crosse back through the plane of his goal and drops the ball to the ground across the goal line. RULING: Goal awarded to opposing team.

"breaks the grip the defender has on the Jersey-How does he do this? With an illegal body check or unsportsmanlike conduct? Breaking the grip of one teammates jersey on the other is not a normal part of lacrosse and probably gonna get a "play-on" or "flag-down", depending on how he broke the grip-or if the person getting hit had an arm on the ground for balance etc.
