Hockey helmets of any kind are not permitted in civilized field lacrosse. By that I mean that any league that doesn't want to risk losing a multi-million dollar lawsuit does not allow hockey helmets for field lacrosse. NCAA and NFHS rules prohibit them. If your area allows them for field lacrosse in the US, they're playing by their own rules.

LaxRef - I think we're talking unruly Canadian box rules here, you know not the "civilized" field lacrosse :WTF:

They've been good enough so far for CLA box lacrosse and the NLL. I'd love to see the justification. The Gait helmet is just an Itech hockey helmet with a lacrosse cage and plastic chin piece. I couldn't stand the hockey cage. Too many bars in the way.

The only thing I could see is that, except for the Gait, the cages do not come preinstalled from the manufacturer, which leaves all kinds of room for improper installation by the user. Then again, a lot of hockey helmets don't come with hockey mask installed either......

Chances are it is a (misguided) directive from the insurance industry.

We've discussed this before in another thread.

Lloyds (OLA's carrier) doesn't really know lacrosse from their own arseholes, and are possibly concerned about exposure in allowing "hockey" helmets to be used as protective equipment for "lacrosse".

IMO, OLA would do well to work with the CSA to get a procedure to approve hockey helmets for box lacrosse. An artificial requirements to buy $150 to $200 lacrosse helmets rather than $35 hockey helmet/cage combos will noticeably cut into minor box registration numbers.

You're right. I remember that now. Reading back in the first post, the rumour was only hockey cages can go on hockey helmets, implying no Marty O'Neils or 20/20s rather than no hockey helmets at all. Either way, it's still stupid.

I think we've also discussed how effective an organization the OLA is :whyme:

Isn't the rule is that it has to Be a CSA approved helmet and CSA cage, or NOCSAE helmet and cage?

yea and ive worn a cpro for the alumni cup 2 years ago now because the lacrosse association got them and i thought it was alot more painful to get hit in the head with that thing on rather than my bauer and nami cage combo.

Hey guys -
Im new to the forum but I know a little bit about lacrosse. I played through highschool but my college doesnt have a team. Anyways, I'm a design student doing research on lacrosse helmets for my thesis. The helmet seems to be the big complaint as far as armor goes and Im planning on making it my senior project. My big question is why doesnt lacrosse incorporate clear face sheilds like hockey and football? Any information regarding this or any suggestions on lacrosse armor is greatly appreciated. THANKS!
Jon

I'm not sure what you mean. Clear (untinted) face shields are optional in lacrosse, just as they are in football and hockey.

Do you mean a clear visor instead of a wire cage like the half-shields some NHL'ers wear? I don't know how strong they are, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable, nor would I ever suggest anyone wear one to play lacrosse. I don't know if they are designed to take a 60+ mph direct hit.

Warrior two yeares ago had prototype clear faceshield at the lax convention.

I did some research that these face shields that aer used for hockey can withstand impacts of 60+ mph.

But believe anything stronger would be very expensive for mass production.
Now your talking ballistic material used by the military.

If they made them, it woud be for post collegiate play. Plus I saw some old NLL photographs there were a few guys wearing clear plastic face shields and that was durign the day when box laxers were wearing kickers face mask! :nut:

There was a post on the OLA forums asking the same question this week. Apparently it has been discussed, and a proposal put forward at the CLA. According to the forums, the proposal was defeated (at least for now).
