This might seem dumb, but does it matter when you drink a protein drink or eat a protein bar?

Is it better to eat them after a workout? or is anytime good? please help!

Ideally, one of your protein intakes should come within 15 minutes of finishing a workout.

Currently I drink 2 protein shakes and eat 2 protein bars a day. I tend to eat 1 bar in the morning, have 1 shake after a workout, and then have the other bar and shake about half an hour before bed.

You should also drink a shake before you go to bed. It builds muscle when your asleep.

why should you drink one before you go to bed...first of all all unused protein that isnt used your body gets it bak out of its system while the other fact of most protein bars and shakes have a otn of carbs in them...so if u do that n dont run during the night of burn off the carbs it turns to fat

You CAN find some that do not have carbs in them.... just avoid ones that have sugar.

Thats the ones that I use. Actually my dad uses them, so I just use what he buys.

Your body will use them while you sleep as this is the primary time for repairing muscles. Protein is used to repair muscles. I doubt I need to explain it much further than that.

When your asleep, your body releases growth hormones, thats why you grow mostly while your asleep, and when those growth hormones are released the protein gives it an extra boost and helps build muscle.

Within one hour of a lifting session you should take down at least 30 g of protein and 100g of carbs. It does help a lot, I have a protein bar and a soda/gatorade, since after you workout is one of the only times where it's actually beneficial to have sugar. Protein shake is slightly better, but either that or the bar as long as it has 30g of protein it's not too bad. Then for the rest of the day you need to get more protein, it's debatable how much, but around .7-1.5g/lb of bodyweight is appropriate, many people use way too much and it's unecessary. I weigh about 150 and when I'm lifting I try to take in about 150g of a protein a day, and about 100-120 when I'm not. When I was heavier I had to ttake down quite a bit more than that. The best tasting bars I've ever tried are Powerbar Protein Vanilla Yogurt (not the regular powerbars, those are nasty) and this one called "Joyride," it has coconut and caramel and 31g of protein. Right after I lift I usually have a MetRX Protein Plus roasted chocolate peanut, 32-34g of protein + a ton of nutrients, it's the only one they make that I can even stand, and a nice sugary drink can make eating it a bit easier :P You'll probably find your own preferences soon enough.

If your into repairing and helping your body while sleeping... look into buying ZMA from your local GNC. I swear by it, I take two every night about 30 minutes before sleeping, with a protien shake and protien bar, and it helps in repairing your muscles and joints while you sleep. Just another edge :)

Those MetRX roasted peanut chocolate bar things are NASTY! But compared to all the other ones they are good. But they have the weirdest aftertaste, think hazlenut coffee and skunk. werid.

Cite a reputable source that says 40 g is the absolute max for everyone, all the time.
