Does icing your shin splints help prevent/ cure them (if so how?) or is it just to reduce pain?

RottingMind, he specifically wrote "shin splints".

Does icing your shin splints help prevent/ cure them (if so how?) or is it just to reduce pain?It doesn't prevent or cure them per say. It's mostly to reduce inflammation & pain affecting soft tissue around the shins/tibia.

but it helps to reduce some of the pain when it numbs it. There are things to do to help them, but to get rid of them mostly you have to rest them for a couple days. Another suggestion is to get a good pair of running shoes. I'm not sure where but shin splints were discussed before, there were more suggestions there

it mainly reduces swelling and pain like said in posts above...rest for a few days to a week and see how it feels...u can also try the RICE method...Rest Ice Compression Elevation

Yeah, i dont know all that much about shin splints, but you dont wanna play through them. My friend that plays basketball had minor shin splints and there was like 3 games left so he kept playing. He ended up fracturing his leg and was on crutches for like 4 weeks, cant do strenuous sports for another like month.

If I remember correctly, shin splints are generally the result of a muscle imballance between your calf and your tibialis anterior(sp? wrong name?), the muscle on the front of your lower leg. I think that the best way to prevent it happening again is to make sure you are streaching your calfs and do some exercises to strengthen the other muscle, like using the calf raise machine with your heels instead of toes.

our athletic trainer gives out ice for shin splints, and just about every other injury too. Its used to numb the pain because even if we have shin splints the coaches still make us run.
