Just curious, what are your "school teams" having you do during the winter to get ready for the season's official start at the end of February? Would be interested in hearing about lifting or running programs for those who are not participating in winter sports. Intent is to discuss good ideas that everyone can use, not compare which school has the best program. If you are on a club team, do you get support from your school to use work out facilities?

hinsdale central is still a club team so we dont get facilities or anything good like that. We are playing in the indoor league, and we may have a couple practices and meetings just to bring up the team up the team morale...other than that no

We lift in the late months of the year, three days a week with conditioning before. Then come february 3 days a week we practice before school for an hour and a half then the season rolls around and we plunge in.

we have intramurals where we play in the fieldhouse every monday. youre expected to lift at least 3 times a week, and you can use the school weightroom (considering it is open to everyone in the school), but a lot of people lift on their own. we max once every 1-2 months so they can keep track of our progress (if we are lifting or not basically) and you have to run if you miss these days. almost everybody does indoor if theyre not in a sport.

MY team is don a fall indoor league/tourny's, practices after thanksgiving, a winter indoor league, U.S. Marine workouts by a marine, practice outside and inside, hitting the weightroom after each, and havin a weekend practice all about shooting, thts my team iss doing this year before the season.

Sounds great, but I think in Illinois your team would be disqualified for the season for participating as a team in events before the official season start. Coaches are not allowed to have organized practices - or coach teams - until the end of February. That being said, your team sure will be ready!

I am pretty sure mystery lax guy is correct. According to IHSA guidelines, we arent allowed to have any organized practices, meetings, or conditioning sessions. If we want to do any of these things, coaches cannot be involved and participation is voluntary. I find its really difficult to get all of your teammates on board. at my school, there are about 4 people who actually do stuff in the offseason out of the 75 or so kids in the program.

we started in september. we did lifting mon, wed, fri-ran 2 miles after lifting mon and wed, then practice wed night for 2 hours, plus a fall-ball league with a game each sunday. starting next week we will be doing lifting for an hour mon, wed, fri, with a 2 hr practice before or after each, then running on tues and thurs. while practice with a coach is not legal until march, we do it anyway

We are a sport now. As a club we didn't really have much of a preaseason. You might not be able to get into the weightroom as a "club" but most schools weightrooms are open to everyone and you can give the speach that we get, "You show up, it looks good when you try out, and you'll be ready for the season, its up to you to make this year, not us."
So see if you can spread the word amongst your players to get into the weightroom.

And I meant to mention it before, captain's practices. The captains run the practice and its completely legit.

most of our lax players are multi-sport athletes so they either do workouts with their in-season sport or on their own.

Jack^^ look at his username and location. Should be pretty obvious...
Not to stray from the subject--but exactly which teams are IHSA sanctioned at this point? Just wondering.
illinois lax !!

i think there have to be like 75 teams statewide before its a sanctioned sport. not exactly sure though.

11-19-2005, 05:39 PM
This is true,
but I'm pretty sure there are more than a few teams that are "school recognized" as a sport (whatever that's supposed to mean), and the number increases every year. I was just wondering where IL was, and how many there are, at this point.

The issue, gentlemen, is not whether a team is school sanctioned, but whether the school has signed the Emerging Sport registration form and filed it with the IHSA. Signing and filing that form is what tells the HSA how many schools have teams. Hinsdale Central, although not firmally approved by the school is a legitimate school team for they first signed the ESR two years ago. 22 boys teams have already signed the ESR for this season. You can read the teams if you go to www.ihsa.org, and click on "Site Index" and then click on "Emerging Sports". 41 teams are set on the Varsity schedule, while 43 are set on the JV schedule. No doubt, the sport is growing with Geneva HS, Benet Academy and St. Rita (Chicago) coming on line, and typical unsubstantiated rumor has it that perhaps two more schools out south may come on board. This is a long cry from four years ago.

yeah i have heard rumors of york hs and downers grove north hs starting teams this next season

Wow really?...and yeah I remember that ERS thing...last year we had to cancel our game w/ barrington because they did not sign the sheet yet
moondog
11-22-2005, 05:57 PM
Yeah, that's too bad. Not only has Barrington won a state title, (01), but they are one of the oldest lax programs this side of NT, LF, and LA. Hopefully, they should be on the sheet by this year, I'd like to think...

thats awesome...it would be sweet if we could get somewhat close to our real conferences that we use for other sports. if york and downers get teams then we could have basically the same conference.
west suburban silver = LT, hinsdale, glenbard west, oak park, york, downers north, proviso west (if they ever have a team we'll know that lacrosse has really exploded).

yeah but there arent enough catholic school teams to have their own conference. so youd hafta mix them in with the public schools. not that thats bad or anything...

oh no they got it signed later in the season, but we never reschedreled a game w/ them...actually i think they got it signed that same day we were supposed to play...? We played them in the quarterfinals later that year though...and lost 3-5 :whyme:

yeah its kinda weird that public schools are so much better in illinois (except loyola of course) and then out east the private schools dominate. i wonder if this will ever change in IL....

well the public schools greatly outnumber the private schools.
private schools-
loyola
fenwick
st ignatius
marian catholic
notre dame
st viator
benet academy (first season)
northside prep
so its pretty much safe to say that the public schools outnumber the private schools 5:1

Notre Dame is looking pretty good this year. I think we are going to move up to varsity level. We were 6-3 last year on JV level, 7-2 two years ago, and 6-3 in the programs first year. So it looks like we are ready for the jump. Right now, we practice a few times a week in the gyms in the area, we work out, and run..alot.

I think this has something to do with size also. I mean, you and I both know LT is HUGE and therefore we have a better chance of getting better kids ratio wise. That and maybe I'm wrong about this, but I feel like public schools provide more camps and such for younger kids or even high school age kids in their area, and therefore will get better players once those kids go to the school.
